Release Anything Is Possible to kick off tour....

Postby Toph » Mon Jun 20, 2011 4:07 am

Journey - this whole progressive/guitar different rock was a nice experiment and everything, but if you guys want to build on your legacy, get some airplay, and have a hit off this album, then, pardon my French, but you need to cut the crap. You've got a second chance to get some momentum behind this album with the start of the summer tour. So, here is what you do - as you kick off the tour, release Anything Is Possible to AC/Hot AC/Adult Top 40 stations. While, not perfect, its the closest thing you have to a single on this album. Its the closest thing that could generate some airplay, maybe be picked up for a movie soundtrack or TV show, and put you all (and Eclipse) back in the limelight. Oh, and by the way, add it to the set list!!!! Focus all your efforts on Anything Is Possible and then this album (and your ability to ever make another) may still have a chance. But if you keep trying to think that stuff like City of Hope or Chain Of Love is going to generate mass audience appeal then we can all hold hands and watch Eclipse plunge down the toilet.

I am all for experimentation and "weirdness", but if no one buys the album than no one will ever hear it. The only way you get people to buy the album is put out a recognizable Journey type song out there. Do it now.

These days it is never too late to release singles. The SOP is to single an album one at a time until they have all been released. With single Digital Downloads being a HUGE revenue stream, most modern artists do this. i.e. GaGa

The album has flopped, releasing a single is not going to change that.
The tour will be fine, they're with Foreigner and Night Ranger, it'a a great bill.

The Greatest Hits is #9 on iTunes Top album downloads for ALL genres. Once they do their Escape/ DSB show for Sunday Morning With CBS, the GH will sell even more.

While it certainly is likely that this would do nothing, I figure it couldn't hurt. Try one more single (one of the more CLASSIC sounding songs), and see what happens. Strategically timed, and we could get a slight boost. No one will argue with more sales, even if they are a minimal amount.

Think of all the albums in the past, that took off after some time. Hysteria by Def Leppard comes to mind. Wasn't that out for close to a year, before it took off? That too looked like a failure. (And, no, I am not saying Eclipse could be as big as Hysteria. I am just saying, another single could be worthwhile.)

Plus, many albums have multiple singles. Journey could at least release a second.

Just for general education, mostly mine, what exactly does it mean today to "release a single"?
I mean, the album is out. Terrestrial radio might or might not know about it. Isn't it just a matter of listeners calling the request line?

Granted, as quasi-epic as most of these songs are, there would need to be some major editing for radio as we knew it 30 yrs ago. How expensive is that today, and what good would it do? Wouldn't this material go to adult or AOR radio any way? Is there any chance of going pop and getting air time along Miley Cyrus & Justin Beiber?

Again, what is "releasing a single" today for an almost 40 yr old band?

I called in one time to request a song and they said they couldn't play it because it was never released as a single. Not sure what goes into that. Good question.

Anything is possible, edited, (yeah i love the solo, but wont fly to the MOR stations) would chart if supported.
its a great song, and so is Resonate. (which should be released to Rock stations) editing just the intro. (which is cool too).

Usually, you have to send the single to the station and then you ask your fans to request it.
That's how Foreigner does it. They'll show you all the stations they sent the single to on their website and then you have to call and bug the station, not that they are obligated to play it regardless if the single is sent to them or not.

I think it's pure Journey myself. If anything, it's guilty of trying too hard to be a Journey feel good anthem, kinda like "Change for the Better." But it works. If AIP is your least fav, what's your fav?

I personally don't give a shit. It charted, which is more than can be said for "Generations". I think it's a solid album. Glad Journey got the chance to do another one.

Resonate, probably their best song since Higher Place.

From best to least favorite.

- Resonate
- Edge Of the Moment

Those two are really great songs

- City Of Hope
- Tantra
- Chain Of Love
- To Whom It May Concern
- Human Feel
- She's A Mystery
- Ritual
- Someone
- Venus
- Anything Is Possible

Yep,.,,the time to release a true single was at least a month before the album was released. Doing it now is a waste of time, and even more money.

No, they don't listen to me because I'm a opinionated, nobody on a fan forum, who doesn't really matter. And, they are short-sighted, money grabbing, greedy bastards who no longer care about the long term future of this band. Better to go for the easy pay check.

If this were true, wouldn't they have released another greatest hits re-record and called this the Don't Stop Believin' tour. Why would they have busted their ass making new music?

I recall Guns & Roses debut (Appetite for Destruction) didn't truly take off for about 9mos to a year after its release date. But that was a very different time. Radio is simply not going to play new Joureny, and especially not in heavy rotation. They just won't. Revelation sold well, but how often did we really hear those songs on the radio. I think I heard AATY twice total. I heard City of Hope once on the local classic rock station just after it was released. Have not heard it since.

Women didn't even hit top 40
Animal and Hysteria wild decent but not overwelmingly successful hits.

It sold 2.5 to 3 million then Sugar was released and then it took off.

Eclipse is a great album. The only mistake is how it was presented in a way that made people look at it backwards. Imagine what would have happened to Frontiers, or Escape, if they singled with the B sides like Edge of the Blade or Keep on Runnin'. The records would have been no different at all in composition but, probably would not have been as successful. The thing that has always worked so well for Journey, is that they are a really solid Popish rockish band who can deliver a great melody but also knows how to rock. Let's face it, Journey's B sides are some of their best songs, and everyone here will agree to that. But it's the pop singles that sold Journey music, and that's the legacy they built for themselves so now they have to live with that. It's much too late to change the playbook. In my opinion, the only thing hugely different between Eclipse and their other records is that they tried to sell the B sides and not the A sides. If journey had just one love ballad on Eclipse, and then made singles out of "someone" "anything is possible" "tantra" or one of those, everybody would be saying same old Journey and the album might do well. Might, because the music climate has changed, and this isn't the 80s. The songs we love on this album like Chain, Resonate, and Edge, are killer songs, and they belong on the B side where the meatier heavier Journey cuts have always lived.

Those of you who think this album isn't as Journey as Frontiers or Escape are just looking at the album inside out, and no wonder. That's how the band rolled it out. Still, it's a great Journey release and it will be whether it sells or not. If you think sales make greatness alone, just go ask Britney.
