Shirley's re-arrangement shows what a difference a good producer can make. His version is TPIYH is epic and could easily fit at home on TBF. Pure class. I like Augeri's vox on the Gens version, but the Rev remake is better overall.

Give me 5 great albums produced by Shirley? He is far from what we can call a good producer. He is not bad, but not great, just average. He is the guy who produced the worst Dream Theater album, the worst Black Crowes albums, one of the worst Aerosmith album, the worst Joe Satriani album and the Iron Maiden albums are okay, but not great.

As for Journey, TBF is way overproduced, Arrival is probably his best work, but he wanted more ballads (wrong move). Revelation is okay. As for Eclipse, Neal and Jon had rework almost everything after they kind of fired him.

Shirley's version of The Place In Your Heart and Faith In the Heartland are weaker than the originals, even if the sound is better.

Disagree. PIYH original largely failed, IMO, at the chorus. The original took a downturn, whereas the produced version (i.e. outside creative opinion) changed it to bring in that hallmark Journey lift. Lots of other bells and whistles were added to create a stronger polish. Arnel is really channeling Perry/Augeri effectively here too. Now this track sounds like something we might have heard from the Frontiers sessions.

Really annoying this track was a "bonus" for certain countries. I don't get that practice at all. What, my money isn't as good as theirs? Way to alienate the fans management! Someone needs to post a megaupload link to share with the board.

Who is this "we" you speak of? Speaking solely for myself, I think the difference between Red 13 and Generations (produced by Cain/Schon and Elson), and the stuff Shirley handled, is night and day.

Never heard that Shirley wanted more Arrival ballads. I did hear that Kalodner, Sony's A&R man, chose the tracks and wanted more of them.

As far as I'm aware, Schon re-did alot of guitar and Arnel did alot of vocals. Even after they switched to Kalumsky, Schon/Cain kept calling Shirley for his help. On Revelation, Shirley even said that he had to arrange "Change for the Better" so that it worked as a song. Given Cain and Schon's relatively simple arrangements, I believe him.

Disagree. The original version of TPIYH sounds like it was recorded in Cain's basement. Like Story_Teller above just said, Shirley added alot of bells and whistles and fattened up the sound. It's a great tune, but the cheapskate production didn't do it justice.

Sorry but Shirley did choose all the ballads on Arrival and even TBF. He also wanted more ballads on Eclipse, shorter songs, etc... This man just don't believe that Journey is a rock band.

Shirley doesn't like complex songs. It shows on Dream Theater's Falling Into Infinity album. He wanted Dream Theater to sounds almost like a pop band ! As for Change For the Better, I think it was a more complex, more progressive song, at first, but then Shirley said : No no no, you are Journey, you should keep it simple, so let's cut this and that...

Yes, I agree about the sound, but as I said, the sound is not the only thing that a producer should do. Okay, Shirley is a good sound engineer and a good mixer (his better talent imo), but as a producer, he is more of a hit and miss. The original's versions are more cohesive, the performances are better. Castronovo was happy about the sounds of his drums on Arrival but he did complain that Shirley didn't left any creative freedom for his drum parts. That is why I think that Castronovo's better work with Journey is on Red 13 and Generations, even if this sounds like shit. I hate the kind of producer that tells a band member: okay Neal, your guitar solo is too long, Deen, that drum part is too big, just keep the beat okay. That is what Shirley is as a producer. BUT, the sound is good.

Hate to break it to you, but that's the role of a producer. He's the additional -- outside -- creative voice in the room. Most creative types/artists/writers, etc. get too close to their creations. They fall in love with the little parts they come up with and miss the forest for the trees. A producer is there to pay attention to the whole and hone the songs into a tight final product. Case in point: Mutt Lange/Def Leppard.

I'm not saying Shirley is the best producer out there and I kind of agree that overall, I don't think he's the best producer for this band. But I don't agree that the original version of TPIYH is better on any level than the re-record. As soon as the original got to the chorus, it lost me. It was not working as a song. In this instances, Shirley's contributions made the song work in ways it didn't before.

Neither Schon nor Cain are terribly interested in giving up creative control. They both have their way of doing things and they even argue with each other during their process. If they want to take their sound to the next level and be more than a band trying to recapture the same kind of work they did with Perry in the mix, they need to go to a producer who will guide them there. They need that third creative contributor. I personally would like to see them work with Mutt or even Bob Rock.
