Something about him still feeling discomfort? I'm probably not quoting him exactly right, but I wished I knew more of this story. Maybe it would shed some light on why we haven't heard from him in awhile.
Um, yeah... maybe THE MAN himself could enlighten "The Faithful Ones".
You'd think, but NO.
You guys wouldn't believe him if he did.
He told us in BTM. He said he's toast.
He said that in 1986.
in 1986, he WAS toast....
Then he did solo stuff including a tour. So obviously he had enough voice left to sing at that point (though in lower keys live). And then the band got back together (TBF). And then he vanished citing a hip issue and pretty much stuck it to the rest of the band. The hip issue has been fixed. Recently it's been "yes, I've been thinking about it." And "I've recorded some tunes". And "I'd like to get back out there". But nothing. And no explanation from the man. He doesn't owe us an explanation, but it'd be nice to put the rumours to rest.
I always wondered if his problems had to do with over steroid use. A lot of steroid use can cause the throat issues he had (and help in a pinch if not overdone) but the stuff can also do weird stuff to your bones and joints- Can you say "Hip Replacement"? This is purely speculative on my part (as is so much of the stuff here). But look at the "Oh Sherrie" video and how much weight he put on. Now look at the earlier shows. The guy was skinny as a rail. For the Oh Sherrie video, he actually was looking pretty heavy (for him). Steroid use can also cause a lot of weight gain.
Hey, in the 80's, lottsa singers used them. But I don't think they realized what they were doing to themselves until it was too late which really sucks. Had Herbie and the band realized it, they could've saved that voice by spacing their shows out more and doing their best to keep him off of anything that'd be detrimental to his chords.
Just my theory. I could be wrong.
Voices are FRAGILE as hell for some people. It didn't seem so for Perry as it did for Augeri. Arnel also doesn't seem as fragile as Augeri. But climate, lack of sleep, air conditioners, not to mention STRESS can really mess with it. When it messes with the voice, you push. When you push, you do damage. If you have a day off to let the swelling in the chords go down, no harm done. If you have show after show after show after show with no break, you're going to have issues.
I'd attribute the '84 weight gain to just not being on the road and finally settling down a bit. It was the first time since '78 that there was no grinding tour schedule. Dude probably just enjoyed a bunch of well deserved downtime and meals
