Well, it's official... I'm now in an 80's pop band!

Postby G.I.Jim » Wed Jul 13, 2011 1:05 pm

I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store all of a sudden, but after a band rehearsal/meet and greet tonight... I'm in a band again. :D I've played in rock, country and 80's bands before, but they've always been guitar driven bands. This band is going to try to do something different than what any bands around here are doing. We're going to focus on the pop side of the 80's. We're going to be playing Men At Work, INXS, Glass Tiger, Billy Idol, etc... I can't WAIT to get this thing off the ground, as I know there's a decent market for it! :D

I just bought a brand new keyboard tonight for the project that is going to kick some serious ass for live playing. I feel like it's Christmas morning!!! I'll keep you posted on the gigs if any of you are close enough to catch one (or if anyone is interested!).

YAY!!! :D The drummer I enlisted last night has a TON of contacts at the beach, because that's where he's gigged for the last 5 years mostly. I'm excited as hell to finally get a good group of musicians together after all these years. :D I was surprised last night to find out that both the guitarist AND the bass player sing lead, and they're both really good! Another cool thing is that there will only be 4 of us, yet there will always be 2 backing vocalists. I'm used to always playing in 6 piece bands, so with 4, we'll be making more money which is always a good thing. We won't have as much equipment to haul around either. These are the first 5 songs we're rehearsing on Sunday...

1. Don't You Forget About Me- Simple Minds
2. Overkill- Men At Work
3. Whip It- Devo
4. Just What I Needed- The Carrs
5. Just Like Heaven- The Cure

Awesome song Jana, and it's already been added to the list! We've got about 15 songs on the list so far. These first 5 are just the first ones we're working on for Sunday. This project is going to be a blast! :D I'd love to add Mindight Oil's "Bed's Are Burning" song. We'll be playing some U2, Glass Tiger, etc... NO CULTURE CLUB just in case someone here was going to ask. Lol!!

Hey, Culture Club put out some fun music. :D LOL

Well, I had to add one or the other in there, either Shout - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54IN3URG ... re=related
or Everybody Wants to Rule the World onto your list as they signify a specific sound of the 80s to me and great music. I still consider Songs From the Big Chair, with only eight songs, and two of them are really considered instrumentals, a little jazzy, one of the best albums of the 80s.

Lol! No, we'll be mixing it up some, but we aren't playing any Ozzy or Whitesnake. I've been there and done that, and I get tired of people watching me play songs that you can't dance to. We'll make it fun, I PROMISE! :D

People dance to the tunes you mentioned above? Little bit lighter than Whitsnake or Ozzy, but still not what I would picture people dancing to. Just sayin

You are correct SF Dano! We definitely have to add more danceable songs. My point though was that we aren't going to be playing hair metal. We'll be playing party, feel-good songs and people WILL like it dammit!
