Interesting Journey Tale

Postby StElmoQn » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:04 am

It seems that no matter where you go these days, you can't get away from Journey in some form or another. I was at the the nail salon a few days ago and was quietly chatting with the guy who does my nails. He asked if I would mind if one of his new nail techs sat in and observed, and if I would mind if he put on some music instead of the blaring tv which is almost always on. I told him no problem, and he went back to turn on the music and the new female nail tech sat down and introduced herself. She's from the Phillippines and has been in the States about 3 years. Doug gets going on my nails and the music starts - it's that typical "Musak" relaxing piano music. I can take that kind of music only in limited doses, and just kind of tuned it out.

My nail tech and the new girl were playing a sort of name that tune everytime a new song came on, I guess it was a cultural thing to see if they could identify American music. At any rate, when the first few bars of a new song came on, they both quickly chant "Faithfully". I kind of groan, muttering how I hate to hear the best Journey power ballad crucified by Musak, and the female nail tech loudly echoes my sentiments. It made me curious, so I aksed her how she was so familiar with the song. Turns out she is a HUGE Journey fan, and her sister back in the Philippines is a singer trying to break into the music business who knows and worked with Arnel from his club days. But what really blew me away was what she said next. She said that as much as she likes Arnel, that in her opinion, Journey isn't Journey without Steve Perry, and that Arnel should quit trying to sing like someone he is not!

It was just so weird to have an unsolicited comment come out like that, especially from someone from the Philippines. I didn't want to get into the age old discussion of who is better, so I just said that the Perry version of "Faithfully" was my personal favorite and left it at that.

Sure wasn't what I expected from my afternoon at the spa...

Our company has a division in Cebu, Philippines. Recently, one of the employees that I manage came over to the states. We discussed Journey and he said Arnel was a national hero, etc. I sent him back with a copy of Eclipse. He left about a month before they played out here, or I would have taken him.

It's clear that you should have slapped the woman and told her that she is a fucking idiot as Arnel is singing like Arnel and not Steve Perry
