I'm surprised, actually. Don't you prefer Perry's voice during the pre-Cain years?

The Captured album is where I though Perry shined. His voice had been too high on the first three albums and Captured highlighted the change towards the Escape sounding vocals that were just around the corner. A very small window it ended up being too as by the latter half of 82, his voice was changing again.

Captured is the best live album I've ever heard. Musically, I think the pre-Cain was largely subpar in everything but technical skills, but Perry was at his peak in terms of live performances. Just consistently amazing.

That said, his voice didn't have nearly the raw strength it did during the mid-80s.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

From the short period of time between Oct 81, when I first saw them to May 82 when I saw the band again, there was a noticeable difference. He had been studio perfect opening for the Stones but even after a break, the May show gave signs that his voice was on the move downward and more baritone was becoming evident.

Im sorry I'm so late to the party on this, but this particular post, I need to chime in on.

Saint John wrote:But, to clarify, the "rehab" thing didn't occur while you were in the band. It was, I believe, while Augeri was in the band. The "story" surrounding it was released and began making its way through the rumor mill while you were in the band ... making it appear as though you *may* have been the source. Nothing more, nothing less. I have never once on the board or off said that you did anything intentionally egregious to anyone in or out of Journey.

Dan, you really need to envision fucking a rabid, dead cat instead of JSS, because your hard-on for the guy is getting old. At least do something to talk the stiffy down. Rossanne Barr naked? Michelle Obama looking at you cross-eyed?

This needs to be said: I had heard this 'rehab' thing long before JSS was even a full-fledged, partner/member of Journey. My source was an unconventional one that could *not* have been connected to JSS in any way, this or any message board *OR* my old, usual sources (which I dare say, had all but dried up by 2005/6).....To try to pin this on JSS, who along with his immediate predecessor in Journey, has acted with the utmost class throughout this entire process.....doesn't really add up. Sorry.

I'll try, but I'm not too optimistic about enjoying it!

This coming from a guy with a photoshopped picture in his avatar!

I'm sure there were more than a few groups of people close to the band that knew about it. Sounds like the people that told you were able to keep it "in house," as were you. Congrats. But I know of someone that was talking about it behind the scenes and the person they attributed it to was the same one that they got weeks of other credible Journey information from. And just like everything else, it always found its way around the mill.

I'm not trying "to pin" anything on anyone. Just pointing out that things could have been handled much better. There was a time post-Augeri when the band couldn't go to dinner without people knowing. Everything from pre-show set lists to post-show dinners was there for public consumption. And this has nothing to do with Augeri. In fact, Steve Augeri is the one guy that did handle everything perfectly (sans his 1/5 of the band's Tapegate blame) and never let band information out. Not ever.

lol

Few things to that...first, inertia.... I'm not active enough here to change it or even waste the time required to do so.
Second, it still seems quite relevant....you just don't like it because it accurately portrays arnel as neals bitch. Thirdly, neals a douche....he deserves some photoshop pain. JSS is not a douche....

But seriously speaking, the first reason is more poignant than the rest....I really dont give a shit whether Neal lives, dies, ends up playing guitar on a platinum record (a real one, not some fake ass double counted bullshit) or skint broke living in a San Fran back alley offering blow jobs at $5 bucks a pop. I just don't fucking care....

I've moved on. So has JSS...
I suspect you still seem pissy about this because arnel hasn't become the second coming of Steve perry you had hoped he would.....my question would be, wouldn't your frustration be better served not directing it at JSS....how many years is he removed from this sputtering band?

Lol ... I'll play along, Frank. Here's what I posted almost 4 years ago. Though much of the top portion of opinion has changed, in light of new details, I think the "prediction" part was pretty spot on. The funny thing is that this wasn't even good enough for Soto and his sack scratchers. They took offense to it! Talk about a guy deluded by 15 minutes of fame!

Originally posted in September of 2007:

Since we're all giving our opinions here, I'll give mine. Jeff and Jeremey both got treated unprofessionally. In Jeff's case, he was treated like an enemy rather than a friend. How a group of individuals could treat someone they consider a friend like THAT is mind boggling. It just makes no sense. Jeremey's treatment was more on par with what I'm used to from these guys. Jeremey wanted a little time to step back, think of all parties involved, how this would affect his family, and make a proper decision with the required time something so big would require. However, he didn't realize that Journey would NEVER be interested in someone that isn't in awe of them. Someone that might actually put family ahead of money. That certainly sealed his fate.

In the end, everyone loses. Journey loses out on the 2 best choices to front the band and Jeff and Jeremey are denied the proper time to receive the exposure they need and the time it would require to accumulate a fan base. My prediction is Jeremey will continue his 9 to 5 job and his very successful Frontiers band. Jeff will tour a bit, put on some great shows, but ultimately continue to fly under the radar as an artist. Both guys lost out way more than Journey, as they can't ride Steve Perry's coattails like the pseudo-Journey can. And that's what sucks most.
