There are many dogs serving as soldiers right now to protect our servicemen/women. Please tell them your feelings Rick on how pets are $25 replaceable. Many of them are mutts, not purebred-but their lives actually have purpose! All the dogs also serving in airports, State Capitals=6 I know of at the Texas Capitol, and other federal buildings and serving the blind.

I can't believe the insensitivity to someone that reached out in pain here today and what she has had to read.

Liz, I'm not an animal hater, please reread my initial post.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

No disrespect to any pet lovers, but I just don't get it. Sorry Scary.

I see people on my friends list on Facebook that absolutely flood the page with "This dog will be euthanized at some certain time if someone doesn't adopt it" and so on.

I look at these posts and am completely baffled. How in hell can you put this much energy into worrying about what some dog's fate is going to be when there are people in the world that need help. Beats the hell out of me.

Rick,

No offense, but... I know I will face a lot of ridicule for what I am about to say... What I don't get is all the people who breed childrena nd don't give a darn only to think they are somehow better than me because I have none. No human children anyway. I know my personal limits. I love kids, but can't handle them. I am not cut out for it. I do however give a lot of love to give, just in a different way . We all have gifts and if we listen we'll know how to best use them.

That would be common sense. I don't think anyone would have a problem with that.

Well, then I guess I have no 'common sense'.

No, I don't mean you cannot love an animal, I have 4 cats. I love them! LOL I am saying you would not chose a pet over your kids, wife, etc. Well, maybe you would I don't know.

I'm pretty sure the cat was stray and the town I live in doesn't have a leash law, so leaving your cat outside around here is like walking into Harlem with a sign that says "I hate niggers."

I have to agree with Rick here. There are children (who are also helpless) in Somalia dying of starvation by the thousands. Not one thread. One dead cat. Three, count 'em, three threads! And woe be unto the ass of the one person who gets out of line and doesn't show the proper reverence for somebody else's dead cat. Please. All pain is pain. Domestic animals are the most unconditionally loving creatures in the world.
Are they sometimes a little frustrating? Yes.
Do they often 'get in the way'? Yes.
Can they be expensive? Yes.

But I tell you this. There is never any being on this planet more loyal & deserving of our respect.
Too often, people take them for granted, and treat them badly.
But ya know what? They have no recourse. We are their guardians.
And I guarantee you, our lives are better for taking care of them.

Somewhere in the Bible it says, "Take care of those that cannot take care of themselves."
And even if you don't subscribe to scripture, caring for another being within the world that we own, only reaps rewards and more rewards.

Funny thing is, I'm not necessarily an 'earth creature'...I've never really cared for pets that much. But I do believe that the superior beings must watch out for those below us. And in all actually, who's to say that they're really below us?

Point is, animal or human, we've got to cover each other. Period.

Just keep a gun handy in case a stray dog (yes, there are those, too) threatens your own pets.

At my old workplace, I used to feed a group of feral cats that hung out in the alley behind the property. Some of them became really friendly and one, a super cool black cat, "graduated" to being the business mascot because he was so friendly to people.

One day, a couple of women were walking a dog they — get this — claimed didn't really belong to them. Whatever that meant. So their dog, a lab mix or whatever, pulled and they lost hold of the leash. The dog beelined right for the cats' food I'd left and gobbled it in record time. I didn't even have time to grab his collar before he swallowed it all. I looked at these women and went "What the fuck? HOLD ON TO YOUR DOG." That was when they claimed they were "babysitting" the dog and he wasn't theirs. Stupid!

As the self-appointed custodian of those 'hood cats, you had better believe that had that hound gunned for one of the cats, and not the food, I would have not hesitated to dive on that mutt and punch the shit out of his head until he whimpered and scrambled. I would've had no problem doing that at all.

Are you headed there now? To help them? Are you carrying provisions aboard your craft? No? Okay, have you mailed anything over there? Are you endowing an organization to assist them, or are you just saving up for your next Journey live DVD?

There are also people in this country who could use the help.

Of all of the people who post on here, I didn't expect this from you. You're usually one of the first to stand up for others, not kick someone when they are down and in pain. Just because you "don't get it" and don't understand why someone would love their pet so much is no excuse.

Until we had a dog of our own, my dad was old school and didn't understand it either - how someone could love their pet as a family member and would be willing to pay $1500 to save it. There is no question now that he would. Until you really look at a pet as an individual with its own personality who loves you unconditionally, you probably won't understand it. And yes, it is worth the long hours I would have to work to save $1500 if it meant saving my beloved dog's life. She is irreplaceable.

As for how people can be so concerned for animals when there are humans who need help - just because someone is trying to help animals does not mean they do not also care about and help humans. Humans have always been in need and suffering somewhere, so the idea that we cannot help animals until every human is squared away and taken care of is ridiculous. Perhaps if you are so concerned about the fate of humans, it might have behooved you to be the person who posted a thread about Somalia and found some way to help those people, instead of a thread belittling another person's pain and insulting others over something you "just don't get".

I got mine for free! + 1 They were thrown out on the side of the road. My next door neighbor said she saw Toni bawling her eyes out. Another neighbor took them in, but couldn't find a home for them. They were two days away from going to the pound. I adopted them as a late birthday present for myself. Better than any ole moldy butt enhancing birthday cake.... Oh, I had one of those too!!!

Rick, people become attached to animals because they react to them, are loyal and are living-feeling creatures. They are also helpless for the most part and because man has domesticated them they are totally dependent on us. These aren't electronics or things that can just be bought and thrown away or cast from one's heart. You will probably always be baffled about it because its not something placed on your heart. Pets become part of your family.

How'd she make out during the 5 hour thunderstorm last night? I know at least a couple of us in this house didn't get much sleep

Period.

Oh my, sensitive subject! Kids and dogs, they can steal my heart in a flash. I suppose people who’ve never grown attached can’t comprehend. Heck, I never really liked/loved kids until I had my own.
The closest I have ever come to owning a cat was when I married one of those Leos and, geeezuz, one is puhlenty.
Yes, I would spend the 1,500.00 to save my cat!!
