Mgmt told him he wouldn't be singing this tour - says it was "confusing" the fans. Yep...WTF?

By adding a song or 2 of his, they can add to the setlist, and it does not take ANY TOLL on Arnel's voice.
In one of the more recent interviews, Deen explained that even though he doesn't mind singing a song or two, he's content playing drums. He also hinted that the band or management thought it didn't make sense to fans to have someone behind a drum kit singing although I'm a bit puzzled at this since I've seemingly always read positive feedback on his performances and honestly am in awe with his voice combined with playing.

Night Ranger. Keagy sings lead on several tracks.

have Smitty get up on the kit and as IBAWY starts up, Steve Perry walks out on stage. Fans start cheering, the band
stops playing, while the fans blow the roof off the place, then the song resumes. A one off deal at a large venue and it would be crazy.

That is the single dumbest reason for anything ever.

Someone needs to tell the band and/or management that what Argus said is exactly the way it is: People wonder who is singing and are amazed when they realize it's the drummer. We know because we have seen that fan reaction firsthand.

I've seen Journey close to 30 times with Augeri, 3 times with Soto and 10 times with Arnel and your assertion is pretty much bullshit. Deen, for whatever reason(s), usually gets the "golf clap." I've never heard a crowd go ape shit over his vocals ... probably because they're usually very difficult to hear! Or, to be fair, because he sings the lesser known hits. Deen has a great voice, but it's not front man material because he can't project. My guess is that Journey's decision to can most of the backing vocals this tour has Deen pulling plenty of weight in the backing department and it would probably kill his voice to sing so many backing vocals and lead. Management has this one right ... even if I do miss hearing After The Fall and Mother Father.

Also the Eagles with Don Henley, and Genesis with Phil Collins. Didn't Steve Perry start in music as a drummer too?

I speak from experience. These are pretty representative of the crowd's reaction after Deen sings.Argus wrote:

Reviews can be written by one person with 642 screen names. The crowd clips from the posted links and virtually every performance I've witnessed by Deen are more than enough proof. Deen has a great voice, but he's, at times, very difficult to hear. He's doing what he should be doing on a tour that has live backing vocals. And that's singing backup. So, in short, I don't need to do any "homework."

That would qualify as micro-managementHonestly, I think that Deen singing was always a huge plus on the tours. But, who am I to say, eh? lol
