It sounds too squeaky for me. :?

I think anyone would doing four shows a week at 3.5 hours each. Journey should have been smarter and Steve should have told them to slow down.

But Steve didn't sing anywhere near 3.5 hours... Not much for him to do during Kohutek or Of a Lifetime

Can't believe the numbers DSB brings in, heck Santa Clarita there was 14,000. I mean, they are pretty friggin good! Heck even the little concert I went to a few weeks ago in a community park was attended by 2000-3000 peeps. Juan's def got the pipes to pull it off. Very impressed.

Yup... Juan has the timbre... if he grew his hair long he'd freak people out from a distance...

Better than Kelty?

"better" is just too subjective a term for me... I don't even think it applies..

Juan is younger than Kelty... I'd venture both are tenors range-wise... maybe even counter-tenor's a-la SP...

I hear Juan's voice as a bit "warmer"... vs.. Kelty's which is more shrill...

Some may not hear the difference but I actually do hear some of the racial/ethnic differences too also.. and in no way is one better or worse... they are just differences... Don't forget Perry was Portuguese, and he was also very influenced by black R&B singers... and it definitely colored how he articulated & inflected words, and the tone his voice would project....

So "better is really not a term I could use...

LOL, minus the nose. :P  A friend of mine thinks he looks like a cross between Steve Perry and Mario Lopez. :o And actually, after seeing him in person, he kinda does.

Agree on the timbre. Really noticed it on Oh Sherrie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AmrwXtPqWU

When Augeri was hired, they passed on Hugo BECAUSE he sounded too much like Perry and they wanted something different.

THAT is the difference,.

But in all promotional appearances, they continued to talk up how Augeri supposedly sounded like Perry ("Perry with a Perm", remember?).

I remember Neal saying that he heard a TS song on the radio in his car and couldn't remember Journey doing the song. When he found out it was TS he thought that it was a "rocked out Journey"

I also remember Neal saying Hugo LOOKED too much like Perry and it freaked him out.

As far as Perryish tenors go, Augeri is about as different as you can get, without losing the ability to cover the catalogue. His musical style seems more rooted in Robert Plant-ish brit rock and 70's funk. Perry was more about Sam Cooke and motown. But any tenor rock voice singing these songs will inevitably be compared to Perry.

Exactly.

Just wanted to pipe in here and agree with this statement. Sometimes people equate two singers having similar ranges with "sounding just like" each other. Steve Augeri sounds like Steve Augeri...Arnel sounds like Arnel...but when either of them sing Journey songs in melodies that we all know by heart as having come from Steve Perry's throat, we tend to jump to the "clone" word a little too quickly. The familiarity comes as much from the melodies themselves as the shared range.

*EDIT - The Noble Cause summed it up better in the post above me...anyone with this range (and singing these songs) will get Perry comparisons. Heck, I have received Perry comparisons and I don't sound a thing like him.

...which contributed to the problem. In the past, you had Augeri getting his voice warmed up and then out on stage to sing for a 90min-2hr show where he hits the ground running. That is ideal for a singer....well, as close to ideal as you could realistically hope for.

On the Generations tour, you have Augeri warming his voice up, then sitting around for 40 minutes while the band plays instrumentals. Then, he's supposed to hit the ground running at the end of the first set AFTER his voice has "cooled down". It's a LOT worse for a singer to be put in that position. Considering he was already starting to show signs of vocal fatigue prior to that tour, the 3hr show was literally the worst possible thing the band could have done for his voice.

Fair point, it was a 3.5 hour show with breaks for him. Deen thought it was a big deal in his latest interview. The long break is also an issue for a warmed up singer. kgdjpubs covered it well.
