^ Not to sound like a walking advertisement or anything, but I'd love to see what you'd like to see in Journey's next studio album in my thread, Greg! You seem to have a good idea of what you'd like to see from the band. :D

That said, would it be a logical enough assumption to say Eclipse is arguably the most polarizing of the Post-Perry albums? Most folks agree Arrival and Revelation were good and that Generations sucked for the most part, but the latest entry from the band has quite divided opinions.

I could say that it might be polarizing just in this forum and the general public hadn't weighed in yet (due to lack of promo) but after two TV appearances which moved sales a smidgen, it appears enough people now know it's out there but just haven't decided to buy it.
Taking Journey's history as a whole, it could be the most divisive album since ROR. Raised On Radio though was lucky enough to have Radio play and sell a few million units where as Eclipse doesn't seem to have anything going for it. Even the band can't seem to shoehorn it into their shortened setlist anymore or don't want to (see the inclusion of La Do Da as opposed to Tantra, AIP, SAM, etc.).

After seeing Whitesnake last night....and hearing 3 cuts off Forevermore live....I can say compared to Forevermore...it sucks.

 Well I don't know if it 'sucks' per se. I listened to it 2 or 3 times when it first came out, but nothing grabbed me. I wouldn't say it sucks, it's just blah for me, just indifferent I guess. None grab me after first couple listens like Undertow or As Far As I Can See. Can't understand why if MB can have 6 new ones and WS can have 3, why can't Journey of all bands put in more than 1 or 2 new ones in their setlist? Unless they are not going over well? Have to say though, it does puts a huge smile on my face reading the excellent MB concert reviews downstairs, they are just killin' it LIVE, haven't read a single bad MB concert review on the web anywhere yet! No mixed reviews there. :) Love it, my boys are back and kickin' ass! 8)

Well maybe Journey fans suck that go to the concerts....I mean last night I watched 2200 (yes I know it's a small venue) not move once Whitesnake took the stage...and they knew every word to all three songs like they were around for 20 years.

It was a great concert...does Coverdale sound like the 1980's Coverdale? No...but he still owns the stage...and with Reb and Doug as bookends....you really can't go wrong.

Um, seeing as how I was at a Journey concert only several nights ago, I can say the place was PACKED and the crowd was very lively. The only disappointment from me personally was the lack of more songs off Eclipse, but everyone looked like they were having a fun time. I know I did.

Not to mention the fact there are THREE bands on the Journey ticket this time around....so yeah it's packed.

Your concert must have been different from the other concerts that people have commented on that the "new" stuff made everyone take their seats, go to the bathroom or to get a beer?

My Mistake....

and they call the Loons delusional.

I don't know....but the Whitesnake faithful seem to love the new music...maybe they are just a different kind of fan.

I didn't see you mentioning the new songs specifically. So my mistake. That said, while the crowds weren't as lively (though the whole place started clapping at the beginning of 'City of Hope' before it got boring), it didn't look at all like anyone was leaving for a bathroom break, or if there were, it was a very small number.

The trend is (unsurprisingly) in most cases the new material isn't being accepted as well as the classics. But the idea that the entire crowd herds its way to the bathroom is... well, stupid and dishonest don't really cover it. (Not saying you, but whoever is propagating that stuff.)

I do think it's a different kind of fan as Coverdale has been the frontman from the beginning....he owns the stage and that
keeps the crowd engaged.

It was a great show....people did not move from their spots and they knew the new music as much as the old, there was no
difference.

Well the thing is that Arnel DID keep the crowd engaged and next to no one ever left the show at all. The only difference between Journey and WS, it sounds to me at least, was that your crowd knew the new songs.

Wasn't the WS show last night at a casino. I am sure most probably did know and like the new music. This is a small venue that will get packed with WS die-hards. Comparing a show in a 2Ksh capacity venue with a bunch of hard core fans to a show in an outdoor shed with a capacity of 15K to 20K filled with a bunch of casual fans (from 3 different bands no less) is more than a bit of a reach.

Ok.....I not sure they were all diehard fans last night, but maybe you know more about the Hampton Beach crowd than I do.

I am not a WS diehard..it was actually my first time seeing them live...and many of the people I had around me were more on
the casual end of the spectrum....my point is the new stuff went over really well to the 2200 people who were there.

Elipcse is not what Journey fans wanted...

Postby MrRockitRide » Tue Aug 23, 2011 12:00 pm

The band can do what they want, but the fans don't have to be on board and that is what is happening with Eclipse. I listen to Toby Hitchcock, Work of Art, and W.E.T. and figure who needs Journey when these guys are making the kind of music I like? Hitchcock seems to sing as well as anyone I have ever heard. Arnel is a great singer, but the bottom line is the band is producing crappy songs and crappy albums. Some will blame Arnel but I can't fault his performance. I blame the powers at the helm for what they are turning out. I guess if they like what they are doing then more power to them, but fans also have a free will.

I'd love Journey to do a small theatre tour where they played a ton of post-Perry stuff. But until they have to they won't again.

no it's not a SHITTY album. I actually like it. the production lacks a bit. sounds like it was mixed by someone who doesn't do a lot of rock mixes.

Its not the voice that people miss so much, more the songwriting style, people forget what a good songwriter Perry was,i like the cd but its more like a good Bad English record than Journey i feel.

I totally agree with the original statement. This album/cd sucks. For me it's not a case of liking or not liking Arnel (as some previous posters have accused). It's all about the songs for me, and the songs on Eclipse stink. As a matter of fact, I only loaded three tracks onto my IPod....City of Hope, Resonate, and She's a Mystery. In my opinion, I think ARRIVAL is still the best thing Journey has done since Escape.

In my opinion, I think ARRIVAL is still the best thing Journey has done since Escape.

Understandable.

Personally, I came to the decision that as far as the best album made by Journey is Eclipse, but the best Journey album they've made was Arrival (and yeah, I'm including this in comparison to the Perry albums). If that makes any sort of sense.

It doesn't.

Arrival is really good, but I was never psyched about the production or rhythm section during the album. Deen was the worst offender there, his drums sound plodding and unsophisticated; he improved considerably for Revelation and Eclipse.

A few of the songs are lyrically shitty and boring, but it has some stellar moments.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
