Teacher penalizes students for saying "bless you"

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN)
A Northern California teacher says he doesn't want to hear a common courtesy in his classroom.

He's even lowering students' grades if they say "bless you" after someone sneezes.

Steve Cuckovich says the practice is disrespectful and disruptive. He's banned saying "bless you" in his high school health class in Vacaville.

He even knocked 25 points from one student's grade for saying the phrase in class.

Cuckovich says the policy has nothing to do with religion, but says the phrase is just a outdated practice and disrupts class time.

"When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body," Cuckovich said. "So they were saying, 'god bless you' for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, I said what you're doing doesn't really make any sense anymore."

After parents complained about students losing points for saying "bless you", Cuckovich says he decided to stop the practice.

However, the teacher says he will just find another way to discipline students for saying "bless you" in class.

Bless his little heart................. It is not that disruptive unless it becomes a game. How often do people sneeze? Not so often that an occasional bless you will disrupt the whole program. I would rather have polite kids, than rude ones any day. Get the burr out of your butt. They can say much worse in class, ............and do!

I agree with the teacher. It's a stupid, mindless thing to say. People sneeze millions of times a day. No need to "bless" them, and I concur that it's disruptive. Like sneezing is a perilous activity that warrants well wishes. Give me fucking break. Let people sneeze and keep your fucking mouth shut in this dude's classroom when they do. Seems simple to me.

It only matters what the person talking thinks. What others think of it is irrelevant. Granted, if you said it to someone that did not wish for it, you shouldn't. The teacher here is just trying to make the kids follow some arbitrary rule to make him feel more powerful than the God he doesn't believe in. Dude needs to chill.

It's his classroom and he should be allowed to discipline kids for unnecessary, disruptive outbursts. Period.

I generally don't say it. I have to take issue with sneezing not being a perilous activity. I've sneezed so hard before that I've actually felt my entire left side go numb and throb with pain for 5 to 10 minutes   ... lol

Teacher's a dipstick ... you don't take points off grades for behavior issues of any sort.

grades = mastery of academic content; behavior = separate issue linked to privileges and consequences

Da, Commandant. Yew haf all da rules. Dey are wurms!

Lighten up, Herr Doktor. Docking a kid 25 points off his/her grade because they're merely repeating something that's obviously used in their household is beyond unreasonable. The dude is compensating for something. It's like citing a kid for belching after s/he drank thirty ounces of carbonated beverage. That fucknut needs to chill because it's a classroom.

And seriously, some dad IS going to get pissed and go down and do something about it if it continues.

Lol ... I should have been more specific. I agree that these fucking dolts that continue to parrot that stupid shit after being told not to should be disciplined, but they should not have their grades altered.

It's simply ridiculous of that teacher to even have that kind of attitude. If he wants to be annoyed by it, so be it. To take points off someone's grade for it is childish. Why didn't he just go ahead and dock points for sneezing while he was at it. That's more disruptive than saying "God bless you". It's unbelievable some of the stupidity that comes out of our government schools.

Sexual fantasies 'can trigger sneezing fits'

Sneezing may give a lot more away than the fact that someone has a cold. It could mean he or she is thinking lurid thoughts about sex, say scientists.

Researchers have found evidence that in certain people sneezing can be triggered by sexual fantasy.

The news could lead to raised eyebrows on the bus or train next time a passenger snorts into a tissue.

Both men and women are susceptible to the problem, which may be inherited. It is thought to be closely linked to the way sunlight can make some people sneeze.

Dr Mahmood Bhutta, an ear, nose and throat specialist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, launched the study after seeing a patient who suffered "uncontrollable" sneezing fits every time he had a sexual thought.

"We thought this unusual and performed a literature search of the topic," he wrote in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Together with colleague Dr Harold Maxwell, a retired consultant psychiatrist, Dr Bhutta scoured internet chatrooms looking for examples of conversations about sneezing and sex.

Typing the words "sex, sneeze OR sneezing" into Google produced a surprising number of hits. Seventeen people of both sexes reported sneezing immediately they thought about sex, and three had the same experience after orgasm.

"Although internet reports do not give us an accurate incidence of these phenomena, our findings do suggest that it is much more common than recognised," wrote Dr Bhutta and Dr Maxwell.

Sneezing usually occurs in response to nasal irritation, triggering a reflex that expels air at speeds of around 150 kilometres an hour.

Eyebrow plucking can also provoke sneezing by stimulating the trigeminal nerve, which produces sensations in the face.

But other more puzzling sneezing triggers are also known, said the researchers.

One was the "photic sneeze reflex" - an apparently inherited sneezing reaction to looking at bright sunlight, which affects almost a quarter of the population.

More rarely, there were cases of people from the same family sneezing after meals.

Dr Bhutta said he believed sneezing when thinking about sex probably ran in families too, but was less likely to be discussed by children and parents.

He added: "It certainly seems odd, but I think this reflex demonstrates evolutionary relics in the wiring of a part of the nervous system called the autonomic nervous system.

"This is the part beyond our control, and which controls things like our heart rate and the amount of light let in by our pupils. Sometimes the signals in this system get crossed, and I think this may be why some people sneeze when they think about sex."

That's takes the cake as the dumbest thing from a teacher ever. Who cares if someone says "bless you" after a sneeze?? They're not trying to impart any sort of religious programming or infringing on the rights of others...they're practicing common courtesy out of habit. That teacher needs to get the apparently enourmous stick out of his ass.

This is disgusting. :? Some "teachers" out there like this ass clown need his balls kicked through his ass! I really despise some of these pricks for putting their personal beliefs into the minds of students. Just read the damn lesson plans and leave your own beliefs at the fucking house already!

When my son was in second grade, his school had a sub fill in for a couple of days. This was just a few weeks before Christmas. This piece of shit told all of the students that Santa wasn't real, and that parents are the true Santa. Students didn't even bring up the subject. My son said he just started talking about it as soon as class started. It's like he had a fucking agenda!

We picked my son up from school and he started balling asking us if it was true. I was so pissed off, that I went into the principle's office and demanded to meet that teacher NOW!!! They wouldn't let me or the other parents talk to him, but needless to say... he was removed from the list of "subs" for our district. What a worthless piece of SHIT!!! It's like he stole my son's innocent child youth from him. I just couldn't believe that someone could be such an asshole.

I remember in elementary when we got our first black students bussed in. One of the first things a new girl in our class told us was that Santa wasn't real. She smarted off to the teacher about it too and got her mouth washed out with soap at the arts and craft sink.

I tend to agree with the teacher. I've alwasy thought it was a stupid thing to say. I mean, isn't it based on some ancient religion, or native American thing, where they thought the spirit was leaving the body? And so by saying 'bless you', your soul was protected from something evil taking over?

I think it's all crap. Why should I do it, or teach my kids to do it?
