This iOS5 install bullshit...

Postby Andrew » Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:59 pm

So many posts and complaints all over the place about this not installing right.

I'm not yet game enough to try - when I start iTunes 10.5 I get a 'do you want to update to iOS5'...sure....hit UPDATE....next message.... 'There are purchases that haven't been trasnferred', well not that I'm aware of but whatever....so I quit and do the transfers. Same emessage still. Ok, so I ignore.

Next message: "Updating to iOS5 will delete all of the apps and media...etc.... to preserve content, apply this update on the computer used to sync apps, media and content' ... welll fuck me - this IS THE COMPUTER I USE! The ONLY one.

The message contiunes with it's warnings of deletion etc. The ? leads you to a Apple site that says iOS5 deletes everything, then you do a restore after the OS is installed.

Before I do that and ruin my MONTH - has anyone else struck this and got thru the update ok?

So far I've had to back it up, then sync, which gave me a few apps that are from my kid's iTouch. It removed 3 apps saying this comp wasn't authorized for them. Not sure what's up with that. I wrote them down and will just re-download. 2 of them are free apps. Then I went on to install and it's backing up again. This time, it's taking longer than the original backup.

I'm eager to upgrade because I have an iPad 1 and they say Safari is much faster. If that's true, that's worth the whole thing.

Plus - I'm a start over kind of guy. If my iPad was completely wiped out and I had to start over, it may actually make me feel better. :) Not to mention I use a Blackberry at work and have been part of this trouble for a couple days. So I'm in the tech failure zone anyway.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

This update is a bit different in the fact that after backup / delete / install / restore , THEN it starts slowly transfer your apps and media. That's why people experience the missing app cause in the past after an update while your apps and media were getting restored , the phone would display Synch in progress.

Just be patient. Follow instructions and after install and restore WAIT cause it will take a good afditionsl half hour for your apps and media to transfer.

So far , love the iOS 5 with the notifications and iMessage. :)

I'm curious about iCloud as well. I'm still waiting for the one thing that will make the iPad useful in my life, rather than just a cool toy. So far, the only real usefulness is mobile web browsing. Other than that, it seems to be all hobby and fun.

I share my iPad with the family. the iPad could be much better at allowing multiple users. For example, Mail that's specific to who is signing on. Without that separation, I don't use my personal email on there, etc. So maybe if I had it all to myself, it might be of some more use. Not sure.

I started to do the update on my laptop and got the same message. But for me, it was true. So I had to move to the desktop. Lame. Seems I should be able to sync wherever the hell I want.

Not sure what to do in your case. I'll poke around for some answers.

Saw this on one site:

If both computers access the same iTunes account, then it should be simple.

1) Synchronize one of the computers with the iPad....!
2) Connect the iPad to the second computer. and select to copy purchased apps from the iPad
3) once they copy, you can syncronize all from one computer.

In your case Andrew, I guess you would go right to Step 2.

I had the same deal when updating my wife's iPad but ignored that annoying message.since she doesn't have that many apps on it I gambled. It still restored her apps just fine.

Good luck Drewsky :)

iCloud isn't really what I'd use as the free 5GB space isn't really enough to back up my 29GB of pics/vids/music/apps

Didn't realize iOS5 was out yet, but I still have a 3GS and will not be doing it - in my experience, an iOS full version upgrade is the quickest way to make your fast phone dead slow instantly. I'm getting one of the new ones when they come out this year.

Other than problems getting the update to run in the first place due to Apple's overloaded servers, the actual install went without a hitch for me.

Install seemed to go well. It's sync'ing back the apps, but I have to run to work. So I'll report back if my apps never made it.

iOS 5 update causes massive internet traffic spike - to users' frustration

iOS 5 update for iPhone and iPad puts huge strain on Apple's new iCloud servers, leading to slowdowns for many users

Charles Arthur
guardian.co.uk, Thursday 13 October 2011 07.23 EDT

Jay Freeman, an iPhone expert, tweeted an explanation: "To anyone getting 'An internal error occurred' (3200) while installing iOS 5.0, Apple's servers are swamped, and failing half the requests."

The download was the sternest test that Apple's servers will have endured so far as millions of owners of iPhones and iPads able to run the new software tried to access it.

However, the shift to iOS5 and iCloud should mean that Apple will in future avoid such gigantic rushes in demand. Future versions of the software can be downloaded "over the air", so that it will be able to pace the rollout of new versions of the software to iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches on a country-by-country or other basis, in order to ease the load.

you know, you can transfer all your files to MP3 or whatever, and save them outside of Itunes. That means you end up losing nothing even if they program deletes them in the update.

So 8 or so hours later, the iPad is still updating. Some of that time it was waiting on me (had to remote in and clear a message, etc). But I have a ton of Apps and some photos and such. So hopefully when I get home, it will be all done.

So turns out I did lose about 15 apps and to Apple, it appears I don't own them for some reason. That's annoying.

I don't have any major problems since I updated my iPhone to iOS5 but most of the cover art for my tunes is missing. Previously, all the songs on the phone had cover art (embedded in the MP3s themselves). Now, however, it only displays about 1 in 10. If I do a "Get Info" on the songs in iTunes, the cover art is still there for every track.

My wife had a problem with the upgrade...Got part way through and it just quit and said it couldn't install OR restore her data. Finally, we re-set the phone (holding down power and home keys for 10 seconds) and then also had to shut down the firewall (ZoneAlarm) and then the restore went through finally and also allowed the upgrade.

Andrew, is it doing a backup when you start the upgrade process? If you're not sure, go to Edit, Preferences, and then go to the Devices tab. If there is a backup, it will be listed in the "Device backups:" section.

Basically what the iOS5 update does is first back up the phone, then downloads the upgrade, installs the upgrade, and then restores your data. My guess is if you have a backup listed in iTunes, you should be OK to go ahead with the backup, but I'm not 100% sure.
