Latest Pollstar Concert Numbers Journey #6

Postby RocknRoll » Sat Oct 22, 2011 2:07 pm

Thought this was just interesting. Country takes the top as usual, but look at those average ticket prices except Brad Paisley. I always thought country was for the working man. Everyones been complaining about the Journey ticket prices but it certainly looks like they are right in line and maybe a little less then the average.

Sade is interesting, but again really high average ticket prices!

I'm just loving Journey beating out the Lepps and Motley!

Journey + Foreigner + Night Ranger

The tour has done well, but you can't pretend Journey drew that on their own while most on that list DID by themselves.

90+5+5 ... at best (for the openers). Otherwise the other two would headline.

I agree with you AR, but it's going to go down as the Journey tour...and as they say success begets success.. It's just the timetable is getting pretty short for this type of tour. I'm just happy for the band this one was so successful!

Say what you all want.

Name any other band on that list that needed 2 other peers to pull those numbers. :?:

And keep in mind KISS tours without package deals and does great and not just in the summer. They play arenas with one shit opening act any time of the year.

Journey had MANY more hits and deserve that kind of status, BUT they don't have it. They open for KISS on the Euro festivals.

Both bands have fucked their legacy up too, but Doc MacGhee is better than Irving Azoff in preserving things. FACT.

Herbie would have never let this happen.

I'm a fan of both bands - but mostly their legacies. I tolerate KISS more because I grew up with them.

Calling Foreigner and Night Ranger "peers" right now is charitable, to say the least. Foreigner's recent efforts have gone without mainstream recognition, and Night Ranger was never in Journey's league as far as popularity is concerned, even in their heyday. Meanwhile, interest in Journey continues to skyrocket because of the resurgence of Don't Stop Believin', opening up their catalog to a brand new generation of fans. Four or five tours ago I would agree they needed help to pull these numbers, but these days, Journey is an undisputed draw.

Bahahahahahaha! They always package up, once they play on their own, then we'll see how they do. For that matter, out of that lineup, Foreigner is the one that has been getting the more consistantly good reviews.

Can't we just look at the 2009 tour to see how Journey did on their own? It was fairly successful, wasn't it? While we're on the subject, how successful was the 2005 3.5 hour show tour?

2009? Didn't they package up with Heart and another band? Or am I mistaken?

2008 was Heart and Cheap Trick. I'm fairly certain that they were on their own in 2009

Journey was with Heart in 2009. I just looked up a vid from the Red Rocks amphitheater. Their revenue was nowhere near 2008's

Journey by far is at a much different place than five years ago. They are once again really popular and really have been consistently one the top concert draws in the last 3+ years. I remember back in 2003 when they toured with Styx and REO for the Main Event tour they only averaged about 5,000 tickets per concert and that was with three bands! Now with Foreigner and Night Ranger they are averaging about 10,000+ tickets sold.

Wrong.

They have done amazing business live since 1998.

The 3 pack tour with semi equal bands shows they are losing steam.

In the Augeri era they only needed 1 opener and did great.

Deen said that they were lucky to get 1,500 people in the first couple years of the Augeri era.

The package tour is more of a promoter's gimmick than anything else. They have these huge outdoor venues to pack all summer long, many that hold upwards of 18,000 people. Even the most established, popular bands these days have difficulty consistently pulling that many people in, especially with ticket prices being so high. These Pollstar numbers prove that. Rather than drop prices to get people in the door, promoters can add other acts to the bill, so concert goers can feel they are getting more "bang for their buck." Would Journey pull the same numbers on their own? Yes - If the price was right. People aren't going "just" to see Foreigner, Night Ranger, or whatever other band they play with. They're going because they sense a "value" they wouldn't be getting by paying the high price for one band alone.

And, as far as good review for Foreigner are concerned - I am wondering what concert these reviewers are watching. They are far and away the worst band that I have seen live more than once. They may be better with Kelly Hansen, but the songs just don't translate well live.

I love the Arrival tour, but Eclipse blew it away popularity/revenue wise.

Very rarely with Heart...mostly alone. I saw them alone on a rainy night by themselves at Darien Lake and they drew over 10k.

Nope, saw them with Night Ranger ...but I will say the J~Boyz were at the
top of their game with AP ...tuned down, yes ...but great sound, a calmed down
AP and an all around terrific show!! 2011 was yuk for Journey, but a great job
by the other two bands

That's what I thought. I was 99% certain that they were alone at Darien Lake back in August of 2009. I was supposed to go but some shit came up...but a few of my friends went and I didn't remember them mentioning any other bands.

Wasn't that a rescheduled Darien Lake show?!? I don't know how many
shows contained a lone J~boyz showing, but a large portion of the
tour had opening acts ...e.g. Heart, Night Ranger ...I believe
a couple of Cali shows were also lone Journey ...seems I recall
G~boy mentioning it!! You could hardly consider that 2009 tour

Kind of apples to oranges. They were touring alone for the most part back then. I saw them in '98 - one of the first few shows Journey did with Steve Augeri. It wasn't a very big venue - kind of a theatre type of setting, but there were no empty seats. The sound was fantastic and Augeri sounded awesome!

Other way around. Mostly with Heart, every once in a while alone. Night Ranger was on a few dates near the end of the 2009 leg instead of Heart.

Heart only played with Journey 15 times in 2009. Journey had at least 58 US tour dates.

I count 41. If it was only Heart 15 times, which seems a bit low, then it was probably Night Ranger 15 times as well. So that would mean Journey was only on its own 10 times or so. Most of those came at the festivals and casinos in the early part of the schedule.
