Steve Perry and Elvis have little in common. The former was a great singer, the latter remains a cultural icon. Moreover, one was a solo act and the other desperately wished he was.

But hey, we agree on the quality of the interview. Andrew asked some good questions, Perry's answers were compelling.

Thanks! I don't go down there since Steve never does anything, but maybe I should.

That was a great interview, by the way. I think Steve shared quite a few things that I hadn't heard before, and it was a very nice read. I don't remember enjoying any Steve Perry interview as much as I did this one, which was a surprise!

Well done, Andrew, you've set a new bar for yourself.

Remarkable job. Jesus.

You didn't force in the stuff we wanted you to ask...you eased them in. Just an amazing job.

Lets get some traffic to this interview guys.

Wow. Just Wow.

Favorite 2 parts:

1) Commenting on JSS.
2) Accepting their decision to move on and acknowledging it makes a lot of us happy.

Wish he would become the bands writer, producer and manager.

I enjoyed the interview very much. Especially his honesty about his own life, and it's ups and downs and struggles, just like everyone else. You can get a feel for what a deep person he is. Great job Andrew! 8)

Oh! And you even got a plug in for the next MRfest! Can you imagine?!

Interesting, was that before or after the band put itself back together with Chalfant, Rolie, Schon, Cain and Smitty and Valory :?:

Great interview Andrew! Nice Job.

Very classy on Perry's part (the entire interview). The fact that he is such a gearhead is awesome. The guy KNOWS his shit when it comes to recording music. Dang. It was also amazing the way he could recall lyrics at the drop of a hat.
This isn't a slam here, but you have to wonder if Steve ever went into counselling for his depression. If not, you have to wonder if it would've helped him get on with his life earlier.

The fact that he says "Journey's doing what they want and they're happy, I'm happy and it had to be this way" is what so many have said for years. It's great that he can look back on it (now) without anger and just say "unfortunately, that's just the way it went and we've all moved on and deep down we love each other". Even if that's not what Neal thinks (though I can't imagine it's not), it's nice to hear it out of Perry.

His talking about the voice and using it all up in a night and having to see what's left the next day is exactly how it is. I found that cool to read coming from him.

When it comes down to it, both sides have done things they shouldn't have. Some of those things (Like Journey moving on after giving him tons of time) I can agree with some of em, I can't (taking a check as an equal partner after being out of the band).

That's the way it goes.

Mac,

That was the best interview I've seen in a long time. Great job! I can't believe how smoothly you lead into the questions. Perry was also very cordial in his answers, what a class act.

It was very insightful hearing Steve talk about his voice and the touring schedule. He must have been under a ton of stress every night not knowing if "it" was all there. Wow, what a cool interview.

I assume you recorded the interview for complete the transcript? Any chance of hearing Steve's singing during the interview?

Well done!

Great job Andrew!

It was a good read for sure. Let's hope at some point in the next few years Steve gets something out there music wise. It does sound like he's kinda tormented in some ways, but generally a really interesting read.

As for posting any clips of him singing, I would hope Andrew says NO on that simply because that is not what the interview was for and because anything less than an actual live performance or something recorded in the studio would be an unfair way to listen to what his voice is like today. All in all....Thank You Andrew! and Congratz!

Amazing job. That's the interview I've been waiting for since 96. And everything about it sounds so "Steve."

I really do hope he's made his peace with the band moving on and really is okay with it.

I also wish he'd stop putting off getting this new music done - if only to shut all of us up.

Can you imagine what kind of pressure that must have been? Living with that fear every day for months at a time? Talk about stress! No wonder he burnt out and didn't want to return!!

It must have been a boat load of pressure. It really makes you wonder how to approach a recording session and how much you push it versus what you can sing on tour. I think Steve's ability to push on the high side is what really made him and was a key to his ability to convey his emotions while singing. It's really amazing Steve went as long as he did with Journey singing in that high range with that schedule. Being a smaller person is an advantage to singing high which falls in Steve's favor. Still, the pressure must have been tremendous.

I think Steve must have went balls out when recording in the studio. It had to be tough when singing that catalog day in and day out on tour. My band does a couple of Journey songs. As I've gotten older, it's more difficult to zip up the chords and sing in that high range (I bet Rip can chime in here). On my best day singing his stuff it's pretty good, on my worst day it's a little rough, and on an average day it's ok but not great. I sing those two songs a couple of day a week (in the original key). I think once you hit you mid 40's, it's tougher to do. I hope Arnel can hang in there. His size is a huge advantage in that range but his age is working against him (at least from my experience).

Damn, what a great interview. This is the best interview I've ever read. I've read it 3 times and it gets better every time. I really like how Mac takes the excuses away about labels and such by making a record offer to Steve on the spot. :D And the offer of playing at the MRF315th was icing on the cake. Mac removed the excuses we've heard in the past. Mac, thanks for that and well done.

Andrew, congrats on the outstanding interview! You really outdid yourself this time. Have to say, one of my favorite parts (and there were many), were Steve's sincere compliments to JSS. Well deserved, and I'm sure that meant a lot to him. Thanks again.
