Does anyone else miss their high school friends???

Postby G.I.Jim » Sun Oct 30, 2011 1:28 pm

Man, I go through spurts every now and then when all I can think about are the good times I had back when I was in high school. Am I alone here or what??? This shit drives me CRAZY sometimes. :( I think a lot of it for me has to do with the fact that I'm 3000 miles away from where I grew up and went to school. I never run into anyone I know... ever. I get like this every few months, and it depresses the hell out of me. :( I really miss my peeps. Anyone else in the same situation?

I used to, and still do to a smaller extent. My parents moved us to Texas when I was a senior in high school. I got hired on at AA, and then my step-dad's job ended, and they all moved back to Oklahoma. Left me here pretty much by myself. I would drive up there every couple of months, as it was only 3 hours away, but it was pretty lonely here. I wound up getting married and having my daughter, which made everything much better.

Like you, I lost a close friend, which was a sad situation, and then later that year, my mom passed away. Part of me wishes I would have left AA and went back to Oklahoma with them, because I missed out on a lot of time with my mom, who was really the cornerstone of our family. But if I had done that, I wouldn't have my daughter, who means more to me than anything.

Keep your chin up though, Jim. You've got a great family and you have us! :D

I live in a small town, and I run into most of them all the time. I only know of a few that moved off. My best friend is in Vegas. She and I keep in touch all the time. :D

I don't miss my friends from high school because MOST of my good friends have come back and started establishing themselves here in this area.

One thing that's great about Cleveland is that it's a big city with a lot of professional service industries (banking, law, accounting, consulting, health care etc), but it's also small enough where you can easily stay in touch with those who come back if you want to. And that tends to foster a sense of community and ongoing friendships among those young people who choose to come back here after going off to college. So, my friends and I stay in pretty good touch. We don't get to hang as much as we'd like to given our schedules, but I am just about to go watch (suffering) the Browns with some buds I've known since kindergarten after I post this message.

Granted, I'm only 25 and I'm sure I'll lose touch with some of the friends I have managed to stay in touch with up til now. But I can unequivocally say at least a few of my friends will always be in touch with me. I'm talking people I knew not only from high school, but also in grade school.

Nope, I hated high school. Couldn't wait to graduate. Picked a college none of my high school friends were planning to attend & have many great memories of my college years. I have no desire to see any of my high school classmates ever again. I moved on years ago.

Not the High School friends. I miss the old gang from the neighborhood more. They were like family.

Clearly. :D

I'm a junior in college and I've missed the social aspect of high school. I was pretty popular then and going from prince to pauper was a rude awakening for me.

Does anyone else miss their high school friends???

Not anymore. I took a road trip to where I grew up several years ago and found that most of them were fuck ups, still doing the same shit we did back in H.S., which was basically nothing but hanging out in bars, getting stoned, or still living with their mothers. My class was such losers. Only a few of us broke out.

I think it is pretty natural to miss old friends. I do it alot since I know longer live where I grew up and spent the major portion of my life. Nothing wrong with remembering good times of the past. Just don't try to relive or recreate them. Usually leads to major dissapointment.

I confess there are a few friends that I miss dearly. One passed way 4 years after high school.
The others are as follows....I see one every now and then....barely talk to a couple others. (Life gets in the way)
One of them... I have missed desparately and truly wish I had that person in my life..

Would be great to reunite with 'the ol' gang' every several years or so...for a fun night out.

Yep..I understand how you feel..

I think you slightly older folks are underestimating the role current technology plays for the younger generation. If both parties WANT to stay in touch, it'll happen.

I never said I expect to be in touch with all the same people my whole life. Indeed, I phased out a LOT of high school friends right after high school 7 years ago. A few fell off the wagon and got into drugs. Many more just weren't really my type any more as I got a bit older. And in fact, my best friend from late grade school/high school completely phased me out with no explanation 3 months after we finished college (where we stayed in touch, hung out all the time boozin/goin to concerts/sports games during breaks, and visited each other at our respective schools). It happens. I don't deny that.

But, I'm still in touch with more than a handful of good HS friends. We're still in the same city, we have a lot of common ground in hobbies and upbringing, and we're all working in a very communal city. Even if we didn't try to stay in touch, we'd run into each other at work, sporting events, and social things. It's just the way it is here in Cleveland. Most of these "high school friends" of mine are really mislabeled: I also knew them since grade school. If we haven't lost touch yet, we probably won't, especially with today's technology. We've been friends for the better part of 20 years at this point.

Thru Facebook I have recently reconnected with a lot of old acquaintances I knew in high school, some welcomed, others I had no clue who they were. My close friends I have had since high school and college, are still that, close friends. We stay in touch, they come fishing down where I live and I go up to either Orlando, Tampa, & Jax to hang out with them. I feel fortunate and glad that these people and now their families are part of my life.

Right! IF both parties WANT to stay in touch. I don't care if I have the ability to teleport friends into my living room, it comes down to it being a chore for me to stay in touch. The truth is, I recognize a natural transition of friends growing apart and going into separate directions - especially if we're at two different places in our lives. For instance, I have a lots of friends that have grown a part from me because they got married and started having children long before I even thought of marriage and children. Plus, a lot of those friends moved away. It's just the way it is; no right or wrong to it. I've found that friends that I stay connected with are the ones who seem to be on the same path as me.

To talk shit about him, even though you go to his shows... Don't really understand that btw. I'll take a DDY show with a band that sounds amazingly close to the original STYX sound, over Shaw's karaoke band with Gowan who sounds NOTHING like DDY. He is a great musician, and I love "Criminal Mind", but he has no business singing Dennis's songs. He doesn't even sound close. :?
