Eclipse & Greatest Hits 2 Sales Totals - To Date

Postby mgstar1964 » Thu Nov 24, 2011 9:13 am

Hello everyone,

Just interested to see if anyone here (Don) has the updated sales totals (domestic and worldwide) for both Eclipse and Greatest Hits 2.

Eclipse has now been on sale and available for 6 months, and GH2 has been available for 3 weeks.

Also, do the reported totals include digital sales or downloads? Just curious ...

I used to enjoy the weekly trackers sent out by Don and others here with the sales totals and chart positions for Eclipse, until they stopped.

I'd love to see some updated totals for each of the new albums, heading into the holiday season ...

I thought someone said Eclipse had about 70,000 sales in the U.S., but perhaps this could be updated, along with their weekly average sales totals, to date, as well.

Thanks in advance ... I have both albums, and have bought Eclipse for a few friends, as well, so I always want Journey to do well - either classic Journey or AP-Journey :) Its all good, to me!

A Safe and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Best Regards,

Michael G.

What the hell do you do to people that you DON'T like? Scary thought.

LOL - Funny! For those that I DON'T like, I would give them a Jonathan Cain instrumental solo album, and a copy of SOUL SIRKUS :)

Actually, the two friends I've given copies of Eclipse to (along with Essential Journey for the balanced perspective) havve both liked the rhythms and beats, etc. Sometimes its an acquired taste, and some parts of Eclipse stand out on any CD (Someone, Anything Is Possible, Chain of Love) ...

I'll be interested to see the video for Ritual that they filmed at the Seattle concert on 10/21/11 - last concert stop of the tour, and when they'll release that / to what formats, etc. Maybe they'll use that as a promotional vehicle for that song to give the album a fresh push when they put the 2012 tour together.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Asia tour is either off, or postponed until 2013, and the Europe tour (had been an annual tradition since 2006, anyway) might only happen with festivals, if at all ...

I thought they really wanted to be out on the road for 2 years promoting Eclipse, as well as the catalog overall (GH2), etc.

Other than the sales level of Eclipse, which was somewhat expected, what has changed within the Journey camp that would force them to radically adjust downwards their touring plans and schedule for 2012? Any thoughts?

From what I could tell, GH2 has only been available in the U.S. Standalone sales are around 8k. The album has been bundled with the GH1 though in another package so not sure how those sales are sitting though for a 10 day period, the double package was in Apple's Top 100 downloads.
Eclipse is in the 70K range stateside. It's not really moving ANYTHING. We are talking in the hundreds, not even thousands per month. The older release, Revelation has continuously out sold Eclipse over the past six weeks or more.

In the UK we are talking about 5k sold for Eclipse, the rest of Europe maybe 3k. In Japan 4,800 while in the rest of Asia nothing. The biggest drop off in that part of the world is the Philippines . Where Revelation had sold over 20,000 units, Eclipse hasn't even moved 2,000.

Not Sure Why Generations was able to sell 20k and Arrivial 32k in Japan while the last two albums haven't done squat.

My theory is that for some Asian consumers, the exoticism of Journey being a Classic Western rock band has been lessened somewhat with the inclusion of an Asian into the group.

Don,

Thank you for the interesting updates on the sales totals - I always enjoy your posts, because they're so knowledgable and cover the business end of things in Journey world, which fascinates me ...

Just out of curiousity, where do you go online to track these totals, sales estimates, single and album charting positions, etc.?

Or, do you work in or around the record industry? Thanks ...

Any additional updates on plans for next year, or why they're not following through w/ extensive touring plans? Will they resume trying to promote Eclipse again next year w/ a video or another single?

Have a great Thanksgiving ...

Best Regards,

Michael

You RACIST BASTARD!!!  Just messing with you Don. I think you're right and top that off with an album that sounds even less like the bands original singer than Augeri did. This album was done before it even got started. I hope Cain takes over for the next one, and I know I'll step on toes for saying this but... I hope they find someone without an accent to carry on the legacy of the band.

I'm sorry if feelings get hurt by me saying this, but to me the band is NOT the band I grew up listening to anymore. When someone has to fake a language that is second to his own, it's just not the same. Arnel has incredible power, range, pitch, and vibrato in his vocals. I know that he's given 110% to the band, and is one hell of a nice guy. I don't fault him for what he's done at all but It's just not the same for me anymore, and won't be until they get another American onboard.

Augeri brought this band back to life for me, and although he had a TON of vocal issues, at least he was a great front man with no accent. I have tried and TRIED, but I just can't get over it. Sorry! for those that love this version of the band... I tip my hat to you, and I do hope you enjoy the shows. I will just bow out from the band until they either get rid of his accent (completely!) or find someone else that sounds more like Perry.

Arrival was originally released in Japan , so the napster leaks did not yet exist, maybe that explains it's outselling of the rest albums. However the poor Revelation numbers is a surpise for me...

Yeah Greatest hits Volume 2 is around 7,500 copies sold so far and Eclipse like Don said is around 70,000 sold in the U.S. and worldwide sales are near 95,000 and thats on the high end.

Still waiting for that Greatest hits 2 tv commercial. So far its had pretty dismal sales for a greatest hits package, but just a little commercial advertisement could boost it back into the top 200 bb.

Here are the sales for Greatest hits 1 as of November 20th:
41 39 62 77 JOURNEY GREATEST HITS 2935 -4 3044 7958256

Captured is still selling around 2,000 a week which is pretty cool:
25 77 95 128 JOURNEY CAPTURED (LIVE) 2191 -5 2301 73936

Thanks for the info Lora. Thats interesting, because I havent seen any tv commercials either. I wonder if the ads are just running on music channels like Paladia, vh1 classic, and vh1?

In terms of mainstream charting success, people stopped caring around ROR. Like Arrival and Red 13, Eclipse is strictly for die-hards. Great album.

I'm sort of thinking that Neal expected Revelation to be a one time thing that would do ok. He might have been well aware that the follow up release would not sell and decided to just do what he wanted. Can't say I blame him there.

You are out of touch with reality. New Journey material has only appealed to die-hards since Perry left. Doesn't matter how many "After All These Years"-style wedding ballads they put out, nobody gives a fuck. If you don't dig the album, that's fine. But don't pretend that your opinion is reflective of some greater majority. The greater majority listens to Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.

I think Neal saw an opportunity to put out a new album and jumped on it. Glad he did it his way.

yup... 95,000 of them "die-hards".... Those same diehards that bought the 70 Million right?

No need to pretend.. the numbers speak for themselves...

Talk about out of touch with reality... labeling all Journey fans who dislike this album as Katy Perry and Justin Beiber fans... lmao....

Huh? What was the last non-Perry album to sell 70 million? What are you talking about?

They also speak for Arrival. A great album that the vast music-buying public did not give one shit about.

Never said that. You are engaging in classical logical fallacy. (i.e. Very few people bought Eclipse ergo Eclipse must sux ass). This is as cheap and lazy as it gets. Stop hiding behind numbers.

I thought we were talking about Journey fans, and what they want music-wise... its pretty obvious that even Journey's waning fanbase prefers feelgood, sing along Journey songs.. a la Arrival... which has sold better than Eclipse...

Agreed.. yet it has also sold better than Eclipse...

Which can only be in reference to the "greater majority" of Journey fans, since you were referring to my opinion reflecting that... unless of course, you got your context wrong.

Arrival Sales Totals To Date

Postby mgstar1964 » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:02 pm

Hey all,

Okay, since everyone seems to be so fixated on Arrival sales and comparing a 10-year old album to Eclipse, can anyone here please provide an ACCURATE total of domestic U.S. and Worldwide sales for Arrival, to date?

I had heard rough estimates of 170,000, but I had also heard totals of 300,000 sales (U.S. or worldwide - not sure) ...

We know it was never certifiied Gold here in the U.S., but I'd be interested in hearing the totals, overall ...

I know that the Journey 2001 Live DVD sold very well with Augeri, and was certified Gold and/or Platinum but I never knew the sales totals for Arrival ... I have both the CD and DVD, actually, and the CD is quite good, musically ...

But to settle the questions and debates around here, who can also provide some updated totals on complete sales for Arrival, Red 13 (original and re-release - web & retail), and Generations (concert giveaways and retail sales) ...

This can give some perpsective, perhaps on the sales output for Eclipse ...

It is important to note, however, that the record industry and CD retail climate TODAY is vastly different (diminished) than it was even three years ago, when Revelation came out ... Back in 2008, WalMart was still a major player in the industry with the Exclusive retail outlet deals that they were doing directly with artiists ... Now, this still exists, but in a smaller form for them, and their retail music department isn't the same as it used to be, size-wise ... Neither is Best Buy, for that matter, however ...

All this is to say that it might not totally be a reflection on Journey and the quality of their music ... its simply a function of the music industry today, and its state of affairs ...

Flame away :)

This is a waste of time. Just a few years ago, Perry-loyalists ridiculed Arrival as the worst selling Journey album of all time. To now hold it up as some sort of model of success is a complete joke. It bombed, and doomed the Augeri lineup from the word 'go'. Like I said, stop hiding behind numbers. And the "greater majority" in question refers to the vast music buying public. That's casual Journey fans, non-Journey fans, and Yanni fans alike. Just consumers, in general. The people that helped make TBF go platinum.
