Finally caved and ordered World Play on Amazon. How good of an album is it compared to W.E.T. and Eclipse?

Not nearly as good as W.E.T., and probably on par with Eclipse for me. It probably gets the nod over Eclipse just because it has some of the same attempts to "riff rock," but Jeff's style lends it more credibility. Let us know what you think.

Ditto. I'd rank them as WET, then Soul Sirkus.......................................................then, Eclipse.

Beware Giddy, if you are into Cain's syrupy lyrics, this is more of a hard rock album. The kind of great old cock-rock (i.e, Chicken Foot) that Cain was scared Journey would turn into with Soto/Schon. I've listened to Eclipse a total of 2 or 3 times when it first came out to give it a fair chance, but SS still gets tons of play on my IPOD. Some faves are My Sanctuary, Praise, Higher Ground, My Position, and of course Coming Home. And a special nod to that funky James Brown tune at the end of the cd. The album is quite bass/vocal heavy so of course, I love it! Would love to see Soto and Mendoza work together again on something..........those 2 just ooze soul/funk.

My Sanctuary (live) ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9Qj2r6cmzY

Bahaha, maybe it's the lyrics that scare Cain?

Soul SirkUS suffers from what Eclipse suffers from - lack of cohesive songwriting. You can have the best singer and guitarist in the world, but if the songwriting sucks....well there ya go.

Soul SirkUS rocks! The album itself is a bit long and some of the instrumentals are a WTF moment, but overall a very solid sex rock album. Listen to Praise and then listen to City of Hope and see if you notice anything

That's my only complaint about Eclipse. The music kicks ass but I have no idea what half the lyrics mean. You almost need to PhD in Buddhism or Hindu or something like that to figure out what there trying to say.

Agreed. Leave the smart lyrics to Neil Peart, and the other progressive bands....just write the sappy love songs, and the uplifting anthemic epics we have all come to love....cut the shit Friga.

Give me a break. Cain even said the lyrics are inspired by a self-help book he was reading by Wayne Dyer. Like fellow bald conman and junk psychologist Dr. Phil, Dyer is notorious for hawking motivational audio tapes to fat housewives on PBS. This is NOT deep stuff. Cain is actually re-treading the same hoodoo spirituality dreck that he first wrote for "Colors of the Spirit" on TBF.

They did that with Revelation. Time to mix it up.

Disagree...Soul Cirkus has more memorably songs and that distinct Schon sound. Not that I didn't enjoy Wet (great CD on its own accord)

I think the songwriting on "World Play" is just fine. Not the greatest but certainly not poor, either, and I'll take it over the WET album also.

I agree. I think it is better, but even with it being better than W.E.T, I still don't listen to it... EVER. I played it a few times after I first bought it, but then stuck it in my vast cd collection never to be seen again. :D

Finally listened to Soul SirkUS. And I'm not going to lie, beyond 'Highest Ground', 'My Sanctuary', and 'Alive'... it took a while for these songs to grow on me. Jeff was great, but the songs like 'Peephole' are the definition of hookless. (And the Sammy Hagar version sucks too.) I believe Neal managed to bring back some of the melodic playing for Revelation and Eclipse, but his solos here are largely just complete and utter shredfests. Which is great at times and hokey at others. But I will say that this has some of his best and most badass rhythm playing I've ever heard.

My initial impression is that it's a 6.5/10. Going to give it a few more spins.

The drumming on the Donati version was in a different league. Shame i can't find any clips on-line to link you to.

I'm not quite sure who it is, I'm not familiar with enough of Donati's work, but the percussion isn't bad at all. Jeff's great and Neal's rhythm playing is tremendous, but this CD isn't without its flaws.

If you follow this link and scroll down the page there is some blurb about the differences between the two versions.
