Buckingham shoulda been much high and Duane Allman shoulda been lower. Cobain had little ability on guitar so I have no idea what they heard. Schon should have at least been on there somewhere. He could be #100 and Lindsey should be in the top 50.

Yes he does. He is an influential songwriter and headed the hippy-led singer/songwriter genre for a decade in the 60s, but fuck me...that was 40 year ago. The old todger has never been a "singer". Deano, you need to get a grip...or perhaps loosen your grip???

True that. That explains soooooo much when it comes to our debates. Dean, if you think Dylan is a good singer, then we are planets apart in our vocal tastes. Like Springsteen, he is definitely a great songwriter, but I seriously can barely make it through a whole song of Bob Dylan's singing.

That list is more of a 100 'most popular' guitarists..............I definitely wouldn't call it 100 'top' guitarists. There is lots of extremely talented guitarists MIA on that list. :?

Bob Dylan is a great songwriter, but his voice is mundane.

Now if you want sucky singing I state that Yoko Ono is the worst! Watch this.........some think she is a genius.

Honestly, any list like this is subjective, but Rolling Stone's list as a whole are just crap. Putting 100 greatest of anything is always going to leave off people and have people in the list that not everyone will agree with. I think I'd have a hard time writing down a full 100 guitarists that I think are great! LOL and I played guitar for the better part of my life!! IMO should Schon be on a top 100 list? Yes. Top 50? Yes. But it doesn't break my heart that Rolling Stoned didn't include him, since that magazine sucks hairy donkey balls anyway.

As for Neal himself...Neal was actually a better player from say 1976 to around 2001 than he is today. He shreds way too much and lacks the melodic, sonic, emotional feel that was spread throughout much of his playing from earlier in his career. He is still a great, great guitar player, but I just don't hear him play from the same "place" melodically in Journey that he once did. His solo works show him in a better light IMO than Journey has in recent years.

I think the reason for the decline is simple: the further he's gotten from playing with a dominating singer who's not afraid to show some control and direction, the further he's gotten from playing for the song. In 98 and 2001, he was still playing some really nice solos, e.g., Signs of Life, Livin to Do etc. He was still close enough to the Perry years. As he got further away from that and asserted more control over the band/music, there was simply no one there to rein him in.

I'll agree with that response... and based on what I saw from Neal live this year, I'd say that's true. There are no "reins" on him and it's just a Neal Schon Noodle Fest at a live show now. Glad there is a ton of studio stuff to show how brilliant he can/could be. He waaaaay overplays these days.

This makes a lot of sense! You are probably right.

Also, Augeri was exhausted and struggling a lot vocally, so more guitar covered up vocal problems, and gave breaks.

They should do this list like NBA does the Top 50, they just add on. So if you already made the list before, you're still there, but others who have made significant strides in the world, get added on.

Just my 2 cents.
