ABBA has sold close to 400 million albums, that just won't happen without some kind of talent.
ABBA had a lot of great songs, and are loved all over the world. Same goes for Celine and Mariah.
I'm not actually making any judgments about the artists in my list. Some I like, some I don't, but the point I'm trying to make is that sales don't make an album good. Sales make an album successful, but as for what's good, that's highly subjective and has to be determined with your own ears.
I think Eclipse is a good album, and I enjoy it. In terms of dollars, its a failure for the band. In terms of them having had the guts to take a chance, and make an album that a lot of serious fans like, that's a success in my book. I figure if they are going to crumble to the will of the casual fans every tour and only play the same hits each time, then they ought to at least give us something new and different to listen to at home. They've done that, and I'm pretty happy with the result.
I wish Eclipse had been successful in terms of sales too, but those of you who like to cite sales figures to support your dislike of Eclipse are using poor logic because sales is not part of what makes a good album. If you doubt that, just look at my list and you're sure to think of a dozen or more mega sellers that you probably hate worse than Eclipse.
