They have run almost everyone else out of business, so there's no competition. I'd venture a guess that they probably curtailed a lot of piracy too with their prices and convenience.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

That's a hell of a deal.

Well, it's been $7.99 for a few months, but my last bill this month was $8.59 - $0.60 higher. An incremental rate hike they think we won't notice? I love documentaries too, and have also been watching some shows I haven't seen before (like "Breaking Bad"), along with some movies like the original "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" trilogy, but I have to say overall that their current selection really seems like one of those low-budget video rental stores who pad the shelves with B and C titles to make it look like they have a great selection. Once their Starz contract runs out, I'm really worried about the quality of what they'll have to offer.

I'm out grabbing lunch and was gong to finish watching an episode of Damages on my iPhone, which I've been able to do without problems until today. Now, Netflix pops up a warning that my ("unlimited") streaming plan only allowa watching one movie at a time, and that someone is already watching one. It advises to stop playing the video first, then try again.

ARE YOU SHITTING ME?!??

According to this article, Netflix is only recently enforcing an existing policy (which I knew nothing about), but it also mentioned TV shows seemed to be exempt. Well, not anymore, I guess.

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/09/07/ ... index.html

Why the hell would I put a streaming device on each of our TV's if we can't use them at the same time? They watch TV constantly - it's going to create a major problem. 1 major step closer to canceling my subscription, and I predict more major defections once it starts affecting everyone else too. After all the heat they've taken just this year alone, is the CEO of Netflix just clueless?

That is a huge issue for sure. They're trying to force households to get multiple accounts. That's bogus. On the other hand, I have several Jew friends who share one password among 8+ unrelated people who don't even live under the same roof. That's not right, either.

Maybe there's some kind of middle ground here, such as registering up to 5 devices with the account? I know you're more of a tech guy Rip, but maybe there's a way that you could tie, say, your household's AppleTV, your iPhone, your Blu-Ray player, and another device or two to the account. Those machines can use the account simultaneously. I'm assuming there's a unique identifying number that can be used to identify each machine (serial number, MAC address, or whatever). That way, you solve the problem of people farming out their Netflix accounts to every friend they have while allowing legitimate households/families to enjoy the account.

Get rid of the old phone, upgrade the iPad or laptop? No problem. Just remove that from the registration and add the new machine.

Excellent point, and actually each device is registered with my Netflix acct - Except my new iPhone, and I just pull up the app and use it that way. I do believe there is a limit of 5, now that you mention it, and I just got this phone a few weeks ago and transferred my apps and data. This might be device 6... Maybe I should look at the settings to see if I need to register it and unregister the old phone. Thanks!

Amazon Ponders New Challenge to Netflix in Streaming Market

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/amazon-ponders ... 09422.html

Amazon is looking to expand and enhance its video-streaming service in what would amount to a direct challenge to Netflix, according to a report in the New York Post.
The Post’s Claire Atkinson writes that CEO Jeff Bezos may spin off “Amazon Instant Video,” which launched last February, as a “standalone, subscription-based operation.”
At the moment, subscribers to Amazon Prime, who pay $79 for unlimited shipping, get the streaming service as an added bonus. Prime has more than 7 million subscribers, according to analyst estimates, well short of Netflix’s more than 20 million.
Amazon also has a paid on-demand movie and TV service, but this would be something entirely different.

There have been rumblings about Amazon taking a greater plunge into the streaming market given its wealth of content, its massive user base and Netflix’s recent struggles.
Ever since Netflix first alienated its consumers last summer with a price hike – ruining a perfect record of consumer satisfaction – the market seemed to open for new challengers. That door swung a bit wider after Netflix and Starz failed to agree to terms, further limiting the service’s movie offerings.
At the moment, Amazon has deals with the likes of CBS, Fox, Disney and NBCUniversal.
Netflix announces its quarterly earnings today, the first full quarter since the price hike and attempted spinoff of its DVD service. Its share price has plummeted over the past several months, though many industry insiders told TheWrap that it had been overvalued.
One wouldn't expect the earnings report to sway Amazon one way or the other, but a little more intel couldn't hurt.

Dude, I hardly ever come here anymore, but I gotta say, your new shitty, bad attitude is SO MUCH BETTER than that squeaky clean Rip Rokken crap you had. Keep up the drinking, swearing, and maybe add some smut laden content into your posts and I just may become a regular poster again. Seriously, you are 100% better now.

I'm still able to stream simultaneously on my 3 blu-ray players. Never tried to use the service on my iPhone though.

Ditched the DVD service but streaming Netflix is still the cheapest babysitter I've ever hired.

I take that as a compliment, and thankfully, I haven't experienced that same Netflix error again. Haven't been watching TV from my iPhone again, though.
