What no support for the video on these programs from the rest of the band members that were "totally onboard" with this video idea? Shocking.

Two of the band members should be enough. The other four aren't needed here.

Michigan Girl wrote:I agree w/Andrew, the band footage is B~O~R~I~N~G …but I’m trying to figure out why. Aside from the fact that AP looks like an out of place little Asian boy with his side part doo and Deen looks like a cast off from the Crue, I’ve come to the conclusion that they just don’t look like they are interacting and having fun. The WYLAW vid is my favorite, and aside from the frolicking beach scenes, I asked myself "what was the band doing differently in that vid than they are here?!?" …besides singing a good song. The answer was, NOTHING!!

The beach footage could’ve been left out, but one of the band members has to be the sexy, sought after love interest, right?!?!

It's all the sullen looks on their faces. There's no intense emotion in the footage...whether it's serious sweaty playing, or open fun. It's just boring...no contagious energy or stage presence. And although, I could do without all the soft beach porn, the vid should have at least ended with her, or both of them, walking away down the beach in a fade-out.

Can you get Entertainment Tonight's website? If so here's a link that will play it there and not on youtube. Just hit the play button in the middle of the picture of the lovebirds in the article. Enjoy! *cough* *choke*

Thanks! Now can I have that 5:03 minutes back?!?!

The band is finished. Schon has jumped an entire school of sharks. Perry has to be laughing his ass off. Some times the thing we bitch the most about someone else is really masking a flaw we see in ourselves. It's gone from being all about Steve to being all about Neal. This is worse than any video they've ever done because its meant to be serious. Separate Ways, After the Fall, Chain Reaction...all kind of tongue in cheek videos...this is horrible.

I think people forget that. I was reading comments with the old "Well, at least it's better than the Separate Ways video" but I have to disagree. That video not only didn't take itself seriously, it incorporated all the band members into the fun. With Resonate, we have guys that look like they can't even be bothered with going through the motions. Couple that with out of sync audio, different screen formats and what looks to be a guy in shades getting intimate with an inanimate figure and you get a very uninspiring video.
It's not 1980 and this is not Echo & the Bunnymen.

I wouldn't say that the band is finished though. They can still tour off the dirty dozen for quite a few years yet. All this video does cement the fact that after initially getting a new lease on life with Pineda, Journey has finally been brought back the pack as far as 80s bands reinventing themselves and trying to create new material that's acceptable to the masses.

Jon included, apparently, per Wikipedia. I'm not sure I buy the idea that it was deliberately made to be tongue-in-cheek.

Maybe not. But they all seem to have been able to laugh at it in hindsight. I can't see that being the case here.

It all comes back to a lack of guidance. Schon and Perry are/were each too immature to run this ship and Cain is either uninterested or leashed by Schon. It seems to me that Azoff and co. have a very laissez faire approach to managing Journey.

Arnel and Deen were working their asses off all night. Of course they look tired. This tune was way into the show. There was happy interaction between Neal and Arnel that night, Deen was doing what he could from behind the kit with energy and interaction with the others all night. Too bad it didn't make it into the video. Cain and Valory just aren't guys you put in the front. That's just who they are. Cain's a songwriter and player, he's not a poster boy. Valory makes those nuttyass faces, but it would've been outta place here.

They filmed this ONE song. They should've at least filmed the show and the audience at different points and spliced it in. The editing of this doesn't create ANY kind of excitement. Look at Faithfully. Great song, but what makes that video good is all the editing of different shots both live and offstage. It kind of told a story. At the end of Resonate, the audience isn't even piped up. It's a live video, take advantage of the audience.

In CONCEPT, Resonate's video beats the hell out of Separate Ways. I mean, can you imagine selling THAT concept to the band - and they went for it???? "Alright, Steve Smith, we're gonna have you, the most brilliant drummer on Earth, beating garbage cans! Jon! You're gonna be playing keyboard- wait for it! ... ON THE WALL! It's never been done babe! You'll be a pioneer!" Utterly one of the lamest videos ever made. It made City of Hope look like The Godfather.

This video's concept was at least better. But to make NEAL and whats her face the center attraction was a waste and to me, it was almost designed to push everyone else in the background. They could've taken the Chris Issack approach and used a model and an actor to do this same stuff, hell, they coulda spliced that in, and actually have some kind of story (A POINT) to it. But as it is, it serves no purpose other than to say "I'm Neal. This is my girlfriend. Oh yeah, before I forget, that is my band". That's it. When I first read about the video, I thought it'd be Neal and his girlfriend, and the rest of the guys and their families and I'm thinking "eh, that might work". But what it is absolutely doesn't.

Man, where is this band's management? Seriouly, they need someone to say "This is not a good idea".

I think if she is involved in the band as heavily as it appears then the band is going to become a farce. It's already headed down that path. It's becoming more of "Neal's Flying Circus" than Neals band Journey.

After reading that about Jon, It's hard to fathom that he was really on board with this video. I can't believe the guy wanted to pull a Tom Cruise over Beavis and Butt-head yet let this fly.

With respect to live showmanship, JC used to display much more enthusiasm than he has in the past 10 years. If you compare the Escape, Arrival, and Manila DVDs, you can see JC's joy diminish with each release. Ross, I can excuse, I suppose... but Deen and Arnel aren't enough to make up for those two. And Neal's hit or miss. Sometimes he can be involved, running around on stage, jamming back-to-back with Jon, and other times he's off in his own world. I've seen plenty of videos where Jon tried to sidle up next to Neal and rock out, but Neal's too fixated on his solos.

It could also be the Azoff has provided specific guidance over the past couple years and Neal and blatantly ignored it to the point that they are like "F it" Neal and Journey aren't worth our time. Neal probably only stays with them because he has the power to broker the 2-3 band shed tours that make them their money.

Also possible, but I suppose Azoff doesn't strike me as a man who'd let his talent tell him "no."

As I said earlier, at least bring the crowd noise in at the end to acknowledge the band. I think the reason it wasn't done was to keep the focus on Neal and Michaele. Those two traipsing around New York this morning as the band's representatives just strengthens my opinion of who Neal really wants Journey to be associated with now.

Separate Ways was fun/funny as heck!! No matter what the band were thinking
while they were making it and after they viewed it, the audience was having a
good time watching them, they made it look fun.
Course, I understand Neal had a girlfirend involved in that vid too ...so who knows
who was running that show!!

I personally don't recall ever being at the final show of any band on any tour, but I
remember people here saying they are THEE shows to attend ...the best!!
I don't doubt the guys were worn out ...we already know AP had to be experiencing
some sort of pain/discomfort, but they knew they were shooting a vid.

I agree w/bry ...editing played a huge part in making this vid so lackluster, you forget it's live!!
I watched it w/no sound (1st time) because I don't like the song and I did not want to base my opinion
on the song ...nothing made me want to listen!!

The last night of the tour WAS fun. Ross and Deen were yucking it up with both Foreigner and Night Ranger on stage.
Deen came out and played Sister Christian letting Kelly sing it and he was really having a great time.
Ross and Deen came out for "I Wanna Know What Love Is". I'm sure Arnel was warming up and I don't
remember seeing Jon or Neal out there.
There are some photos from that night that were really good and they actually were having fun together on stage.
Not like Night Ranger or Foreigner, but you could tell Neal had Arnel's back and Deen was happy to be there
so close to home. When I met Arnel, he seemed fine. Not limping or anything like that and he was a
super nice guy. But he was very quiet.

They were having a good time at some points in the show, but it wasn't like watching the Monkees or anything.

Having said that, I DID see the last night of the Goo Goo Doll /Michelle Branch (blech!)/ Parachute tour and it was SUPER funny what Parachute was doing to the other bands throughout the evening. At one point they all came on in their underwear. It was really funny.
But Journey are a pretty serious band.

Granted, this video is causing tons of publicity for the band. But it's the wrong kind. They should recut it as a band video and get the other stuff out of it. At least at that point, it's something the band can use without all kinds of bad pr.

Just wondering...why they only shot this 1 song? Could they have kept filming
the entire concert ...for the same price?
Apparently they were filming & had personnel on scene to film it at the time...
so why not film it all and put it on a DVD ..Blu Ray or whatever?

They would have had to play more new music to differentiate it from their last two DVDs.

LOL Thanks Don...
Apparently the bell in my brain hadn't gone off yet...
Yea unfortuately if they had planned in advanced & to have filmed
it and put on a DVD..& sang a couple new songs...Yea probably the fans would
have been upset & walked out...
Before they made this chitty vid...wonder if Neal had ever thought about
doing the vid like this for that song?
But since Ms came along seems she is doing NS thinking for him....

Not sure they could have used crowd pics of this song, as most people would have a look of "don't know this song...sounds pretty decent...I think...aw...better go take a leak."
