My Ode To Deano

Postby Andrew » Tue Feb 28, 2012 3:03 pm

It’s taken me all day to get to this….just because I don’t want to write it. To write it means the end. And I don’t want there to be an end.
Dean was indeed one of a kind. Thank God for that too. Not sure I could take two of him around these parts!

I don’t recall anyone I have banned more often than Dean. Nor do I know of anyone that I’ve given more second chances to than Dean. But I always brought him back. No other user has caused me so much grief, so much controversy and so many PMs. But I wouldn’t change any of that.
I used to love the PMs asking me why I would continually allow Deano to post. Why I gave him so many chances. And I especially loved the ones asking me what he had on me…haha! After all, he must have been blackmailing me to stay on the board for so long.
No, far from it. Even though he and I swapped just as many “fuck you” messages as we did “love ya bro” messages, I GOT Dean. I understood him and I knew the way he ticked. And I liked him. I respected him.
I didn’t always agree with his methods of delivery or the way he got all bent up over one user and let them know it, but the bottom line is that a number of those folk got removed over time, but Deano remained. He remained because I have a lot of time for people with passion. With the 100% self-belief in their convictions. You may not agree – but you knew where he stood and what he believed in. And he remained because he contributed like few others could.

Some of his political rants were just priceless. In fact, most of his rants were priceless and as I hovered over the delete button about 1200 times, more often than not I’d have a smile on my face before I erased another little bit of Deano magic (sorry old mate!)

I got to meet Dean in person and concur with all other comments posted about his real life persona. Still as fiery and as passionate as you’d read here, but with that added ingredient of humanity you just can’t see on a message board. He loved nothing better than a stoush, but totally gave credit and respect back when you were brave enough to get into it with him. Like I said….passion and conviction. I like that in a person. I liked that in Dean.

Despite the sleepless nights during the Tapegate marathon of posts and Journey management calling me up asking “just who is this Rockindeano???”, I never anticipated a time when the board would be without him.

In recent times his demons came calling. We talked a lot. I have mine too and tried to explain how I was dealing with them. The fear is always there that they will beat you and a couple of times I thought Dean had surrendered to them.
But no…the big lug fought on. We had a marathon chat a few months back and my wife also gave him some thoughts on how partners deal with issues like depression. I think it helped. Only 2 days back he PM’d me to give me shit about how he expected me to be too hard on the Bruce Springsteen album (no mate, I dig it!) and thanked Cath and I again for our time talking to him.

I figured he was on his way back…now this cruel injustice. His heart just gave way.

So I lower the MR flag to half-mast and bow my head in honor of the great, larger than life Dean Ulrich, the contribution that RockinDeano made to this forum, this community and my own life.
One great night out and a few interesting days in LA with him, but a post legacy that won’t ever be matched and a friendship I won’t forget.

R.I.P. Dean.

Lula and Wyatt....my thoughts and prayers are with you both.

PS. Don’t give Clarence Clemmons a hard time about too much Bruce related stuff :)
PPS. Fuck You!

Simply brilliant Wombat!
You best review in years (ducking and running :) )

Seriously, Andrew....I think Dean would be proud of your eulogy here. It's some of the most heartfelt words I've seen you write. I know this place will never be the same without Deano.

a sad day. A sad day.

Great post Andrew, and I'm glad you had him as a friend. Like many others here who have countless stories about him and his funny way of going about things. I spoke with Dean a few times, and he and I also talked a lot about life problems in depth. I've probably told him more of my own personal problems than I have my very close friends.

Unfortunately, Dean and I bumped heads (like we always would over our political or idealogical differences) a few months back. We have many times and would blow up at each other. We'd get over it and fix it (normally through PM's) and apologize to one another. The difference is that we didn't get that chance this time.

The last PM I got from Dean was a pretty nasty one, and I will hate until the day I die that we didn't get to patch things up and have a laugh about it. I do think he was a great guy, and he will be sorely missed from this forum. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in here going back and forth with him in a debate until 2 or 3 in the morning. He's had me so mad that I probably had STEAM coming from my ears. At the same time though, we'd get over it and he would make me laugh like nobody else could.

Rest in peace Deano, and know that you were one of a kind with many people who cared about you. Even if we didn't always show it.

Andrew, that was beautiful man. I could feel everything you were trying to convey here. You were a great friend and Dean will be missed! I feel for your loss, all of ours, and I pray for Lula and Wyatt. This is gonna smart, as my Dad used to say. We should celebrate his life and have faith that he is in peace now, in a better place. In some crazy way, I feel Dean left this place better than when he found it.

knowing Deano he'd say:

"so.... do I call ya St. Peter... or can I call ya St. Dick?"

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Hole-Lee-Shit. These were classic. I made a series about some MR'ers and Dean begged me to do more before it went cold with the xtranormal.com movies. Here was my Rockin' Deano movie:

I haven't shed a tear since the death of Michael Jackson. Before that, probably 7 years or more. Couldn't believe I did either - But it came from some place deep within. A little drink helped bring me there.

Started telling someone about Dean an hour ago and just broke down. Before him, it had been
about 15 years.R

RIP Dean

Absolutely BRILLIANT, Drew! What a superb job summing up Dean and what he was all about. Dean sent me just as many messages over the years telling me that he was completely done with this place. In fact, he even told me that he "retired" (Ha), but he always made his way back here, and we were all better off because of it. This board will simply never be the same without Dean. I woke up this morning hoping that I would sign on to MR and that this would all be a bad dream. RIP Dean.

Very well worded Wombat!
I was hoping you would add your thoughts here, thank you.
I can't believe I've had eye leaks over this but I have.
Why in the name of nevermore would I be bothered by it?
The man couldn't stand some of us and I directly felt his
fire fingered foolishness many times.
He could always make me laugh though.
No matter how mean he was being, I could always be brought back
to belly shakes by him.
He most certainly will be missed around here.
I'll remember the good in him and will pray for his loved ones left behind.
Thanks again for the touching post Andrew, all class you are.

My little ode to Deano and, since I've never used this kind of language on the forum before, I'm sure he'd appreciate the hell out of it...

I can't stand that fucking cocksucker Glenn Beck, that neocon, knuckle-dragging neanderthal and quit riding Limbaugh's cock like there's no tomorrow.
