The cutest, most plush teddy bear or other animal you can find. Can't go wrong with that. I've done it many times, and they've kept them over the years. Hell, I bought my wife a big plush bunny for Easter about 5 years ago and she STILL has it! Just make sure it doesn't have anything small that can come off of it and be a choke hazard. That kid will love it one day.

well, as a newborn he won't know the difference in gifts so it's been my experience that making it easier on mom and dad with the things newborns need a LOT of is a much appreciated route to take... 3 months, so May or early June yes? I remember when one of my friends had her first baby (therefore no existing supply of baby stuff) - she was due during the first week of June, so I loaded her up with a big supply of "onesies" in 0-3 month size and also 3-6 month size to get her through the end of the year along with a big pile of washcloths/burping cloths and some 3-6 month size jammies (for fall/winter) and she loved it!

Then later when he's older you can show up with all the fun NOISY stuff that you don't have to live there and listen to... LOL

Have they registered for baby gifts? You can go off of that too.

His parents are going to hate me. Anyway, I've been leaning toward a little outfit or two , but beyond that I'm kinda clueless. He's not due until June so I still have some time to think about it, which is why I'm asking now.

Diapers are always a good option! Also, like someone else mentioned, see if they are registered anywhere for gifts-that helps a lot.

If you are close and money is tight for the parents, offering to get one of the big ticket items -- car seat, stroller, highchair, swing, playpen -- would be a really cool thing. But you have to let them tell you exactly which one; new parents obsess over such things. Then you also show up on the big day with an enormous bear.

A Radio Flyer Red Wagon # 18. It gets passed down to his/her kids and I still use my sons to do help with yard work. Best present he ever got. They even make nice strollers now-a-days.

I partook in one of those Toys-R-Us spending spree things with my girlfriend for newborns. The mom's to be walk around and tag things they'd like and need for a baby-shower and the people going are welcomed to go and get a tag what they need. We ended up getting this HUGE set of diapers, lotions, rags, medication and all baby-stuff in a big basket for like, $35 bucks. I'd do something like that, something the parents would need and a gift basket full of diapers and baby supplies is great. You could always get a play-pen or something along those lines for a 1st birthday or something. For now, helping the parents out as much as possible with supplies is the way to go for newborns.

We used to call burp cloths "spit rags"....2 of my kids were projectile vomiter's and it just seemed more appropriate!
