I couldn't help but notice how Hershel kept pumping off one shotgun blast after another without ever needing to reload. We are so past that point of human gullibility, it should never be attempted on cinema again. Nor the fact that none of these characters EVER misses a head-shot. Not one single wasted bullet ever.
Hershel in particular annoys me, just about as bad as Dale did. He's an incredibly spot-on personality type, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. He's a guy who uses religious belief to justify his own deep-seated contempt for people who don't meet his personal standard (which is a standard he personally fails to meet). In other words, somewhere deep inside he resents himself, but he remains in denial and judges others instead to avoid judging himself.
I can't wait until he gets his jaw blown off.
Rip, you seem to have some pent up anger and aggression. Would you like to talk about it? Damn buddy!![]()
Come on Rip, I know you don't hate religious folks in general... You put up with Daniel and I! LOL! People are people. Christian or not we don't always do or say what we should. Show me a flawless atheist.

But isn't that like most people? Don't we all get some kind of idea of what kind of people are good or bad? I have seen that in atheists and Christians alike. We have people we would see and judge based mostly on how they look...who they are. I have learned through out my life that judging a book by its cover is a fallacy. Sometimes a tough biker chick, is just the lady who would save your neck in an emergency situation.
Hershel is going through a Metamorphosis, and they are showing us his change, from rigid its my way or the highway, to knowing as humans we cannot know everything, and we cannot control our environment and lives like we would like.
His previous ideas were out of love for his family, and trying to protect them from marauders. Truth be told how do you know if a person coming to you is kind or would slit your throat?
Was he wrong on his perspective? Sure. But they were not in normal circumstances were they? The world as they knew had gone insane. I think his character is there to show us sometimes our preconceived notions about others can be wrong.
Honestly if they never brought in the Christian element, what would be your take on him? I think he is showing how these things shake us to the core, and all beliefs in humanity, civility, and faith can be tested to the limits.
I think it is thought provoking at least. Hershel plays a part that adds a dynamic that would be there in a crisis. I think the writers are covering all types of personalities.
Anyway I am curious how this all will play out. There is still the one armed racist brother that has not been accounted for.
