Could Styx or Journey get away with this?

Postby Archetype » Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:40 pm

The song in this video was released in 2000. So this would be like Styx playing something from Brave New World or Journey playing something from Arrival, and having the crowd of 50,000 enthusiastically singing it back to them. It sucks how bands like Styx or Journey just can't promote their new stuff properly.

Maybe their new stuff sucks?

The big difference in Iron Maiden still has Bruce Dickinson and they probably play their newer stuff on a regular basis on tour. Fans can't sing along if they don't know the newer stuff exists. Not having an egomaniac guitar player who is desperate to stay in the spotlight helps too...

This has zero to do with promotion. This comes down to a core audience and Metal Heads are devout in their love for all things metal. If you are in that club they will take care of you. Iron Maiden is one of the Godfathers of metal and still has the main core of the band together. People still buy their records due to loyalty and not promotion as Iron Maiden is not played on the radio or MTV.

Journey is a main stream artist since Escape and that crowd comes and goes. For a melodic rock band Journey does have a good core audience, the best in their genre. They can tour the United States and play to more people and more markets than Iron Maiden, but throughout the world Iron Maiden draws and can play new material.

A true testament to metal is that VH1 Classics highest rated show is That Metal Show and it is played all the time and old and new Metal videos are played all the time.

When you go to Metal shows they are generally well attended even for newer artists.

I don't think that Journey could play to more people or markets than Iron Maiden. The Maiden England tour is just about sold out now and The Final Frontier tour was wildly successful. Eclipse debuted at #13 and nosedived. The Final Frontier debuted at #4 and stayed in the top 40 for a couple of weeks.

^^ This. Metal is a lifestyle. We sleep, eat and live metal. Additionally, when it comes to these "godfathers of metal" bands (ie.. Priest, Maiden, etc), they've not once - that my feeble old mind can remember - let their fans down. Be it live, albums or whatever... they've always "made" their music FOR the fans, respected the fans and stayed true to their own core. I'll let ya know how the August show in San Antonio goes with Maiden - hopefully not everyone in front of me stands on their chairs.... I don't stand a chance in hell of seeing a damned thing if they do.

That's true too. That said, Arrival was a great Journey album. Eclipse and Revelation combined aren't half of what Arrival is.

I laughed when I saw that, too. The only thing Journey has done more than Maiden is play casinos.

KISS played Modern Day Delilah, Say Yeah and I'm An Animal for just about the entire Sonic Boom tour. CD debuted at #2.

I should've said a band with hardcore fans. But casual pukes who want to hear "Open arms" and "Babe"...no. Styx was smart, and strayed away from that.

Iron Maiden is only playing in 31 markets this year in North America, when Journey played 70+ last year. Like I said, in the U.S. Journey will play to more fans and more markets and it is not really close. Maiden is playing the same venues as Journey did last year just less of them.

I'm not saying this to pump Journey or bang on Iron Maiden, it is just the facts in the US. For example, Maiden cannot bring their tour to Vegas because they don't draw here. Journey has sold out every Summer tour in Vegas and has done well in the one offs in the Winter.

If I could only see one show this year and my choice was Maiden and Alice Cooper or Journey and Loverboy I'm going to see Maiden.

Vega$ is a very special "market." Being a desert metropolis with nothing around it for hours' worth of travel time, it's a very American Top 40/Celebutainment/hits-oriented place. If Bruce Dickinson was exposed as having had an affair with Steve Harris' daughter and E! and all the tabloids covered it, that is when you'd probably see Maiden playing LV.

Maiden could easily double most of their tour stops if they felt like it. A break between shows is preferable to the proverbial conveyor beltload.

That's true. As of right now there are only NINE seats left in the entire reserved seating area at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center for the Maiden England tour. The show isn't until July 16th. The Live Nation interactive ticket map is pretty cool. Bands like Journey tour themselves to death. The Iron Maiden catalog is a pretty damn difficult catalog to sing. Dare I say about as difficult as Journey's? Bruce's voice is still pristine because he isn't being toured to death.

Posted below is a vid of Styx w/Gowan doing his "Criminal Mind" song that was great and the audience cheered and that was a big crowd. If Journey were willing to cut its attendance in 8ths they could do it.
