Cracks me up when the band says they aren't worried about "commercial success." Commercial success equates to the fact that alot of people actually like the music and want to buy. Without it, you have a CD that... not many people like.

Pfft, I stand by my (perhaps slightly optimistic) belief that Resonate could have done it.

All that aside, Eclipse is one of the worse selling full release original albums in Journey history so I don't think they will be going down the harder rocking path they did with Eclipse again, it's just retail suicide at this point.
Adele is closing in on Diamond status for her album so records do still sell on occasion but for dinosaur acts, if it doesn't include some form/interpretation of prior hits, it's likely to be dead in the water nine out out of ten times.
Case in point, Lionel Richie's last album of original material released in 2009 sold 96,000 copies. For his new record, he just redid his greatest hits again but this time as duets with country stars. The album has sold 400,000 copies in four weeks and has likely climbed to #1 this week.
Nostalgia sells, just ask Sony. 650,000 copies from Journey's back catalog sold this year. If you're an old act, that's where the money is.

Cain said the reason they were able to do Eclipse was because of the success of Revelation. They had a free card to play and they used it. If they get another chance with a big retailer is now up in the air.

I don't believe Schon & Co recorded "Eclipse" with any hopes of commercial success. I think they knew Wal Mart would buy 100,000 copies of it, or whatever, and they figured this may be the last chance they had to have any major contributor come in and pay them to make a record. So IMO Neal says, okay, if this train is going back to the station soon, I'm going to use this opportunity to make the JRNY or Journey 2.0 or whatever project he envisioned without the Perry baggage on someone else's dime, and that's pretty much what happened. I don't think there will be another Wal Mart financed record, nor do I think there will be another major label release...now it's time to see if Journey still has the motivation to release one more record, this time bought and paid for with their own money....I have said it before that I personally feel "Eclipse" will be the last release from Journey as we know it. I've been wrong before, so who knows, lOl!

Just listened to Tantra again and the first thing that popped into my mind upon hearing the opening lyrics "One light shining bright..." was an old cartoon with Walter Cronkite called Liberty kids. The episode where Paul Revere and William Dawes spread the word that the British are coming.

There is no longer a marketplace in the US for bands like Journey. Unless they sell their soul and partake in a hip-hop cover of DSB, they are right not to worry about commerical success. They are also independent. Without Sony, commercial success becomes even more distant. In terms of pop cultural relevancy, the band is doing fairly well, all things considered. Y'know, Loverboy released an album thru Walmart and it flopped. Easily one of their best efforts. Commerical success doesn't mean shit. Even Madonna is struggling to sell units these days.

What I see is a generation now and maybe the last one too, where the majority could give a rats ass about music that came before they were teens. When I was a teen in the 80s, sure I dug the bands of the time, but I also, really had and interest in hearing what came before. Thank god too. I would have missed out on Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, The Eagles, Elvis, Deep Purple, Sabbath, Skynrd, Marley, Steely Dan, Aerosmith (the classics), AC/DC with Bon Scott, and so much more incredible music.

I may be wrong, but I think must of us who were teens in the 70s or 80s were a bit more acceptable and "into" the music that came before. Hence bands like Aerosmith, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and such being able to carry on and sell for more than just a few years or even a decade.

I also said it would be their last, but I saw where a while back Jonathan mentioned something about when they do their next record. I can't remember the context, maybe that they would record in Nashville in his studio. I can't remember, but I do remember being surprised by his remark.

Jeremey, I finally bought your album off iTunes. Great album. Really loving I Think I Knowmand Hoping For You. Great cover of Goodnight Song.

"Stay" and "Can't You See He's Gone" are where it's at. He definitely convinced me he had the writing chops to bring some great, heretofore unexplored dimensions to Journey.

I think Tantra is brilliant from start to finish. It did seem kind of like a movie or opera piece, but it's a great song. I love trying to sing it and I play it on keys too. It's a huge challenge to sing this song. I love putting on Eclipse and driving to my monthly Kart race in Fontana. By the time I come over the hill in Chino on the 60, Tantra comes on, I look at the mountains and blue sky, the sun's out and it's a beautiful day, around 745 AM- the lyrics always fit the mood perfect!
