Old Foreigner VS New "Foreigner"

Postby G.I.Jim » Wed May 16, 2012 2:19 pm

Just curious to hear what you all think of the new vs old Foreigner? I personally think there will NEVER be another Lou G. but in light of that... I also don't think they could have ever found a better replacement than Kelly. Here's a couple of my favorite videos to make some comparisons from...

Old Foreigner's "That Was Yesterday"

I freaking LOVE Lou Gramm!!! He was so amazing back in the day that I put him even (maybe even just slightly higher in my book) with Perry. He obviously can't sing at ALL like this anymore, and I really think Kelly is doing a great job, all things considered. Just curious to hear your thoughts...

This is a counterfeit band. How are they anything other than a tribute band? Lynyrd Skynyrd is only slightly more legit. That said, they rock, but they are Foreigner in name only.

Kelly is a great singer. No doubt about it. However, Lou Gramm is my favorite all-time singer, so for me, there is no good replacement. On top of that, the one studio album they've done with Kelly wasn't that good overall. Decent songs, but not enough hard rocking.

I'll take the orignal in this comparison. If the supplied video of the current Foreigner is indicative of their performances, than I really do not understand what all the raving last summer over this group was about. They are not bad by any means, but kind of blah.

Prefer the Gramm led Foreigner, but the new Foreigner was good enough on the last tour to be the second best band of the night behind Night Ranger!

Jim,

You opened the door so here we go. :)

- Lou was the original singer of the material +5
- Lou was co-writer on the song +5
- Kelly sings it at least a half step down -10 (don't have time to get the guitar out)

Score Lou = +25

Kelly is a great singer. He's not the original singer. Kelly is a replacement singer that requires detuning to cover the material. Lou is one of the best singers in rock and roll (just behind Perry).

The real question is, as a musician, are you really competent? I'm questioning the competency of anyone that has to ask this question.

And for the fuck wits that need it spelled out for them, the answer is LOU GRAMM.

which is very surprising to me since Kelly just before joining Foreigner was singing HIGHER than prime-era Lou Gramm. Either he is giving himself a lot of breathing room while on tour or his range has dropped significantly in the past 10 years. I figured it would be a Brian Howe/Paul Rodgers situation where Kelly would be resting his voice on the Gramm material.

Steve,

You mean you're not cool with 0 original members recently being called Foreigner? Dude, what is a matter with you? I can't believe you're not cool with that.

Penis... I SAID that Lou Gramm is in my opinion the best singer of all time. I'm not asking if you think Kelly is better. I'm... well, you know what? I should have worded my post differently and not made it a new vs old thread. That's not what I meant. KNOW WHAT I MEAN WHEN I POST FUCKER!!! Lol!

I should have just asked if you think Kelly does a great job as a replacement singer. That's all. I think the band does a great job , and in the absence of the legend, I think they found the best replacement they could have ever found. He's also a great frontman up there on the stage.

I also agree that the new album was less than stellar. I think I listened to it 3 times, and haven't touched the disc since. I would LOVE to hear them do something a little more nostalgic and go the route of VH. Just my $.08 worth.

Oh, and Aaron... I'm just a talentless hack that's not even a decent bar band musician.

Gramm is working on a new cd and claims it's non-Christian, just straight forward rock. "Can't Slow Down" was strong, but a little too ballad-heavy and mellow for me. Looking forward to what Gramm comes up with.

I think Kelly is a great replacement singer and a great showman. The only issue I have with Kelly as a replacement is running a half step down.

I liked the new CD too. It was a LOT better than that turd Eclipse. It wasn't great but it was good. In Pieces is my fav off of the new cd.

As far as talent goes, it sounds like we're in a similar place.

I would not go to see Styx,Journey or Foreigner if given FREE tickets !!!! How many albums have these groups written w/o their original singer/songwriters ? It is no more than guitarists that think they are the main attractions.

Lou was always tough with phrasing live. Very hard to sing along with. Just his style.

Current Foreigner are "jukebox heroes" where that is concerned.

I just saw Lou with Eddie Money and Mickey Thomas around Christmas time.

I'll take what is Foreigner from their first album until the '4' album. Everything they did after '4' with the exception of Unusual Heat I don't care to much for because of how poppy they became. The new album I do admit though had a few good songs on it, again though way to poppy.
