Do youself a favor and buy:
- Hugo
- Hugo - Time on Earth
- Hugo - Fire in the Night
- Valentine
- Valentine - Soul Salvation
- Ramo/Hugo - The Dream
They are all really good cd's. Hugo's writing capabilities are as good as anyones. Journey would be lucky to have his talents fronting the band. Mac even stated on the main site that Hugo's CD was what Trial By Fire should have been. The dude is good and can hit the notes whether he looks like SP or not.

Had you read my post from the beginning, you would've read that I like Hugo's music. In fact, I own three of the albums you listed and enjoyed them all. I only referred to the cliche comments on Hugo, as an explanation to the gent's question about hatred aimed towards the man. That's all. Calm down.

If you make references to two comments that I made (the lookalike and tribute band factors), I have every right to believe that you are referring to my statement. Don't condescend me, prick.
Navarro wrote:Thanks for the replies. After listening to a lot of these links, although I wouldn't describe Hugo as a "dead ringer" for Perry's voice, he does resemble Perry's sound. His upper register is more in his falsetto than his head voice which gives it the lightness of timbre. I don't hear the r and b "Sam Cook" melismas in the solo stuff and they are weak in the Journey covers. All this said, the guy is still a great rock singer and has a great melodic rock sound. I like his stuff. Of course, NO ONE comes close to "the voice"!
Aaron wrote:Dude, I agree with you. You have to take Hugo for what he can do. He sounds similar to Perry but he's not a clone. He rocks a lot harder and his song writing is as good as anyone's IMO.
I don't think Hugo is in falsetto on any of his singing. He is a taller person (like me). With bigger parts, your natural range is lower than smaller people (ie SP). I think Hugo is zipping his chords up to hit the notes, not going to falsetto. Falsetto is an airy tone when the edges of the chords vibrate to hit the notes. Zipping up the chords is where you bring together the lower part of the chords together and only vibrating the upper part of the chords to hit to hit the notes. So you have only a portion of the chords working plus larger cavities that reasonate at lower frequencies. I think Hugo is zipping up the chords running in almost all head voice to hit the notes. I think this is what gives his tone a lighter timbre. In any event, the dude can do some good rock. I'd argue better than Journey lately.

Yea....it's not falsetto--at least for the most part. He has done a little bit of falsetto here and there, but no more than early Perry. The other thing to remember is that the voice gets thinner the higher you go. Hugo wasn't exactly blessed with a lot of depth in his voice to begin with, and he's lost a little bit of that depth just due to the natural age process (compare the first Valentine cd to anything recent to see what I mean). Combine all that and you get Hugo's voice that is about the same depth as what would be falsetto for another singer.

The best cd for me was the original Hugo album (or basically the 3rd Valentine cd). The others had their moments, but that one cd was better than some of the cds Journey released for me. Wasn't impressed at all with the Ramos/Hugo cd. Really weak songwriting on that one.
His voice works on the original material, but it fails when you compare him to the depth of Perry's voice at the same range on the Journey material. He's got the range though. His stage presence is a bit freaky also. Probably too many years of consciously trying to copy Perry, and the physical resemblance makes for a strange combination.
