The 'Payphone' band want to be like the 80s rockers, who's track 'Don't Stop Believing' was a minor hit when originally released in 1981, but a huge worldwide smash when re-released in 2008 after being used in TV shows.

Singer Adam Levine said: ''We're counting on the cultural feedback loop to pull a Journey on us. Journey wasn't cool. Now I can't go out one night without somebody screaming the words to that f***ing song. That's what we're banking on. We'll play Coachella festival in 15 years.''

The singer is aware that many people don't perceive his band as cool, or groundbreaking, but they have their own sound which is different to other bands.

He added to Details magazine: ''A lot of people perceive our music as very safe, but it was a reaction to the conformity I was rebelling against. When I graduated high school, I moved to the east side of Hollywood and everyone was hip and cool.

''Everybody wanted to be the Strokes, and I wanted to sound like Michael Jackson and write pop songs. Maroon 5 may not be groundbreaking--we're not f***ing Arcade Fire--but we did s**t other bands weren't really getting down with.''

I've been listening to the new Maroon 5 for the past couple days. And I like it generally, though it doesn't touch their first album. But I have the same complaint with this that I have with several new albums by pop artists. The use of the words Fuck or Shit. There is nothing wrong with these words placed in a song when it makes sense. But I get annoyed when it's just a really lamely placed word because it takes me out of the song and makes me realize oh yea, this guy wasn't writing from his heart, he was trying to be hip. It's like watching a really good movie that goes off into some weird dream sequence and you realize oh yea, this is just a movie. I had to actually turn it off this morning because it was annoying. Especially in the Deluxe version with the remixes.

I think in most situations, it's cheap and lessens the experience. Other times, like in Eminem's "Lose Control" or Staind's "It's Been Awhile" it comes across as necessary and the song may be empty without it.

Plus they have gotten too poppy for me. Here you have these really incredible musicians and it's all dance stuff now.

I've gotta admit, Payphone is catchy as hell (minus the rap cameo by Jizz Khalifa). But I am convinced that "Moves like Jagger" is what they play in hell. God I hate that song.

I haven't heard the new album other than payphone. I heard it midway through and thought what is this garbage then I heard Adam's voice and very disappointed. Songs about Jane is a pop masterpiece. One of the best pop CDs ever. It still sounds great today. Their second CDs was good too, but not great. Now they have sold out their roots and other than horny 14 year old girls, no one will buy. They don't suck, they are truly sell outs. Maybe that makes them suck. Sound familiar Journey fans!?

Maroon 5 played four songs on The Today Show this morning out in the plaza. They were fantastic. Adam gave a really strong performance for so early in the morning, which many acts are a little lackluster that early. Twelve thousand people showed up for their appearance. They are definitely having a resurgance from Adam being on The Voice and from the Moves Like Jagger surprise hit.

They have gotten poppy just like Coldplay's last album, very poppy. I liked Coldplay's earlier stuff.

I'm actually still stunned that seeing more of this vapid personality free moron could actually increase sales. But any TV is good PR I guess.

I don't get it, there's autotuning all over this cd , I thought this guy could sing, why would anyone use this if you have the ability to sing well with your own voice
