Sadly, that's pretty much what Survivor are anymore, a jukebox.

Having said that, in Survivor's defense is there really a point in recording an entire album? Is the cost worth it? I like what Loverboy's Mike Reno said last year following the release of their single "Heartbreaker"
He said, "I don't know if it's worth it. I don't want to spend $400,000 in the studio recording 12 songs, when people only want one or two. I don't expect to be on the radio anymore
."

It does seem that Jamison-Sullivan is all about business. Jimi doesn't seem to be a happy frontman when he does Survivor shows. If you look at all the youtube.com videos of Jimi from 2009 etc he really became a good frontman and animated. I really think he did a hell of a job getting his vocals back .

I really listened to When Love Comes Down tonight and I added the original I'm Always Here at the end and I really loved his urgent vibe on that cd. His vocals were not as polished as Vital Signs or When Seconds Count or even as powerful as Too Hot To Sleep but it is him.

I am also surprised that even though it is a Survivor show that they play just as many non Jimi Jamison sung tunes as the ones he sang.

I like his solo shows and I think you get a better show especially with the songs we all as real fans wanna hear.

I wanna hear Caught In The Game - Didn't Know It Was Love - Rebel Son and even Is This Love live .

Someone mentioned he would be better with Peterik. I think musically and being viable as far as recording new quality cds I totally agree with that .

Does Jimi's return with Frankie ruin any future deal with Frontiers Records ?

From the Survivor website:

Survivor – Jimi Jamison (vocals), Frankie Sullivan (guitar), Marc Droubay (drums), Billy Ozzello (bass) and Walter Tolentino (keyboards/guitar) – will begin working on a new album, expected for release in 2012.

I don't follow them closely enough to know if that is really their intent though.

I am aware of that claim on www.survivormusic.com but I don't really put much stock in it. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Well, you are going to a Survivor show, not a Jimi Jamison show. Since having 2 lead singers isn't a viable option for the band (even though the fans would like it), you're going to get JJ singing stuff that wasn't his. That said, I think both Jamison and Bickler have earned the "right" to sing the remainder of the catalog. It provides a nice "what if?" scenario also.

Well, Caught in the Game is Bickler, so that just contradicts the previous point. I think Survivor has enough songs to please both the casual fans and the diehards--providing the setlist is long enough. Hard to please anybody if all you are doing is playing for an hour.

Still, I was surprised to see this setlist from JJ solo, which has about half the set of material that he didn't sing lead vocals on.
01. Burning Heart
02. High On You
03. Rebel Son
04. Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On *
05. More Than A Feelin' *
06. I'm Always Here
07. Caught In The Game *
08. Riders On The Storm *
09. Ever Since The World Began *
10. It's The Singer, Not The Song
11. The Search Is Over
12. Turn To Stone (Chiseled in Stone??)
13. I Can't Hold Back
14. Eye Of The Tiger *
15. Can't Find My Way Home *
16. When Love Comes Down

Who knows the way business works, but I seriously doubt he would sign away all rights to recording new material outside of Survivor when he has worked for these past couple of years just to build that up.

Don't JJ and Peterik have some issues now? Thought I'd heard that. Anyway, JP is busy with POL.

I think JP is merely suprised that JJ has taken this course. New POL this year and maybe even a new JJ with Erik Martensson in control. All good.

Agreed! And in regards to posts above about 'it' being a business, well, at the end of the day it has to be for Survivor and most other bands from the 70s & 80s. Heck, even some bands from the 90s are touring each summer (which yes, I know is more than Survivor can say), and already playing the same setlists night after night. Playing fairs and town festivals must be a nice enough gig.

I just tried to visit www.survivormusic.com but it was not up, it says that it's down for maintenance.

Might Frankie be posting details for the new album that will soon be released?

Too true...I understand. Im already tired of it....but its the old tunes we can depend on. Do you believe with new music they'll do well? I really doubt FS feels this so they're just going down memory lane. That's all Survivor is now.

There's about a 99.5% I'll be there tonight! Despite this heat; the cold front should lower the temps to the mid 70s by showtime.

Since it is literally 8 minutes from home, we're going. And it's free to boot. I hope to get Marc and/or Frankie to sign my Vital Signs LP. Jim signed it at MRF1 and Jimi at MRF2.

I've heard Frankie never signs for fans, but one of the times I saw them years ago, Marc was hanging with fans and signing everything and anything after their set.

Survivor @ Northwest Fourth Festival, 7-7-12

Postby mrsromek » Sun Jul 08, 2012 3:56 pm

Went to the show tonight at the Sears Centre. The setlist was exactly the same as the one on setlist.com from May in PA. I thought they sounded decent considering how few and far between their shows are. 13 songs total, including a long keyboard solo (before The Search is Over) and then a long guitar solo w/ drums as well (right before Somewhere in America).

Marc and Frankie signed my Vital Signs LP! Frankie and Jimi were signing a bunch after the show near the trailer. I got Marc as he was being escorted to the hotel transport vehicle. I guess he was a bit under the weather tonight, per the police officers doing the driving. He played his ass off, and I thought he sounded spot on during each song.

Decent sized crowd for a town fest. I think Frankie had a ton of family there, as they were all sitting within the fenced in area in front of the stage.

I did ask Frankie about new tunes or a new album. His response: "nah, we're just going to be playing live for now" So, there you have it as of 7/7/12 right from his mouth at about 11:35PM CST.

I hope for their sake they DO play more regularly. There were some awkward exchange moments with Jimi talking and Frankie wanting to say something, or vice versa. IMO, let the frontman talk-that's his job. Frankie was rocking the entire time, even during some ballads. My wife commented on how she liked Frankie's leather pants with tassels (sp?) on the sides (just a note for you fashion experts out there).

No, no, no mrsromek...that just can't be true...

FS said for a fact they were putting out a new album and he don't lie! :) ;) ;)

I even saw the new cover!

Also did you find out anything about the 'new place' for Reach that he found that was going to 'blow our minds'???

What a joke...

What I don't understand is why does he constantly talk about new music in his press releases? Why even bring it up. My guess is to keep hard core fans interested.

I think maybe he got the hint that saying he was working on new material for many many years and releasing only 1 album in like 15 or so has jaded the fan base...

I GIVE HIM CREDIT for saying they are just playing now....

He mistakenly thinks that by lying to the fans that we will stay interested in the band, but that if we know that they're not really working on new music that we will stop going to the live shows. (How ever few of them there are.)
He would have been much better off being honest all along. Even if we know that they're not working on new music, we will still listen to the old albums, and we will still go to the shows. (Again, if by some slight chance they play in our area.)

But I still want to know why the hell Frankie won't at least post one or two new songs on the website for download? They have (If I'm correct?) like 7 songs that JV wrote with them for a new album, and they have a boatload of songs that they recorded for the FMS album that they've never officially released. There's no shortage of material that they could choose from to post one or two songs on their website.

And why did Frankie ask on their website what format the fans would prefer for getting unreleased Survivor songs from the classic era, and then never even release that stuff in any way shape or form?

I wonder if Frankie ever wonders why the bigger majority of fans like Peterik better than himself? It's partially because of stuff like that.

We the fans are like a man who's lost in the desert and who is looking for water. Frankie keeps telling us that he's about to give us water, and he even holds it out in front of us, but he never actually gives us a sip of that water. He only taunts us with the promise of water.

I don't know....I really don't....but there is a 15 plus year history of this if you look through the archives on survivormusic.com.....or you used to be able to....

I do not hate the guy...I am just VERY frutrated with him....I used to be like him as it comes to saying here comes the goods, then nothing....but I worked hard to change all that....and Mecca II was the result of all that work.....some people have all the dreams, but none of the follow through....problem is there were alot of people who left the fan base and think of him as a joke.....and that is not good, I am not happy about that....considering I defended him more than anybody....

But..I am still on a high from spending two days with Lukather, Rundgren, Rollie, Page (Richard) and I met Ringo on Sunday night as well.....so I am off the Survivor kick for a few days hahahahah.....

Dreams do come true!
