^ Tight performance, but I must deduct points for two reasons: FIRST AND FOREMOST, the shitty prerecorded keys are a tremendous distraction. Neal wants to rock hard and instead of giving Jon permission to use an acoustic guitar to play OTY's rhythm parts, they elect to use a soulless keyboard loop that Justin Bieber would find gay. Why, Neal, why? I can only assume that he can't stomach the idea of letting Jon play a noticeable guitar part and prefers to have him so far down in the mix that no one can hear him.

The other reason, of course, is that when Neal goes to play the solo, Jon runs up next to him to jam out... and Neal doesn't acknowledge his fucking existence. We all give Jon hell for not putting much enthusiasm or showmanship in his performance, but the days of these two doing their back-to-back (literally) jam sessions and mutual interaction on-stage are over.

Neal, if you're reading this (or, rather, if this is being dictated to you by your blonde attention whore of a troll, you illiterate high school drop-out fuck up), I personally challenge you to find a new and inventive way to prove that you're an ego maniacal 'tard.

there is keyboards (really light though)... the same descending lick that Jon is playing on the Fender 12 string electric... 1:52 is a good shot of it...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

At 2:30, Neal begins his solo and Jon's not even playing, but the riff still is.

Just saw your edit. The keyboards aren't light, they're pretty loud and obvious and detract from the song. They need to ditch it.

Agreed.. they don't need them if Jon is already playing the lick... unless Jon hasn't been consistent with playing it... so they decided they needed the loop...

they probably are MIDI tracking to the highhat/snare/kick

triggering the keyboard sounds could be done via the click Deen could be playing to (but that would make the music very rigid and lifeless).... so it's likely that the key sounds are triggered by another instrument, likely Deen's highhat, with some software driven "humanize" algorithm making it (the triggered loop) less robotic sounding...

Most of the drum sounds you hear these days are triggered studio samples anyways.. makes it much easier for the FOH engineer to control environmental variables of the venue (humidity, temperature) and the affect they have on the drums (tuning, wind in the mics, etc..)

That was not English and you certainly have a higher opinion of Neal's comprehensive faculties than I do.

But I think I got the gist of it. The bottom line is that shit needs to go, like now. Ruins an otherwise good song.

ya.. although in fairness... removing it would leave a HUGE hole if Jon stopped playing for some reason...

True.

I recall, though, that he used to play acoustic guitar for the rhythm parts. Or at least he did for the Virginia Beach '98 proshot concert that used to be on Youtube.

I think Only the Young is one of those songs that is great on record and just doesn't quite translate live for whatever reason. I think the production on the studio version just gives it a very unique, moody/spacy feel that is pretty tough to reproduce live.

But that said, I agree, losing the keyboard loop and adding the acoustic would go a long way.

Agreed. I love it, but its not as good live, which is weird for Journey. Not a singer thing either because Perry's live version of it are some of the worst. It was also the only song I really didn't enjoy JSS on.

Well, on night three After All These Years and Where Did I Lose Your Love are already out. Replaced by Chain Reaction and Still They Ride - at least they didn't just drop the song slots and let Neal solo longer. Still at 18 songs, with Never Walk Away, Faith In The Heartland and City Of Hope representing post-1996 Journey.

Opening night is in standard key.. I bet money they will be dropping keys soon. Arnel will be toast if they dont.[/list]

Listening to LTS it is obvious that Arnel has been listening to Captured.. He is singing more like Steve did live. I used to like Arnel. Now, he just doesnt do it for me. I have never seen Journey live and I guess I never will. Schon wont stop his over shreddind, Arnel sounds too forced and the whole things just comes off as lame to me.

That's a change for the better. Oh and speaking of Change for the better does anyone besides see a cheesy 80's montage in their head when they hear that song.. I HATE that song.. It should have been the soundtrack to the skiing montage from the movie Better Off Dead..

We need montage !!

Not a surprise. The band tried to go a different way and it wasn't accepted. I think they pretty much are resigned to Arnel going out there and doing his best Steve Perry impression and rolling through the classics as faithfully as they can now. That's what everyone wants so why not give it to them?

I have friends going to the show in Bangor...the other night I had to break the news that Steve Perry is not fronting Journey anymore(they were stunned :) :)) ...and it was a guy from YouTube. These are women in their forties that listened to the band back in High School and thought they were going to relive the glory days of Journey...not so much now.

I am amazed that there are fans out there that have no clue about members leaving. Members of ANY band. When I saw Journey in 1998 for the "Trial By Fire" tour, there was signage saying "Steve Perry and Steve Smith are NO LONGER MEMBERS OF JOURNEY. They will NOT BE PERFORMING TONIGHT" or something to that affect. I was standing next to some people that read it, then said we're leaving. I attempted to engage in a conversation, but they were adamant that if SP and SS were not in the band they had no intention of seeing the show. I said to them then give me your tickets. My then g-friend and I went from upper bowl to the floor like that, all because the Steve's weren't in the band.

The same sign showed up again the following summer for the same TBF tour. And again elicited the same result from a few people.
Oww. My aching tentacles.
