Car Accident Today

Postby Everett » Sat Jul 28, 2012 7:21 am

Ok guys i'm fine but I guess the car was considered totaled. I have a question here
the car was a rental and the officer said I was at fault which is fine. Now I did
have insurance with the car but since it was my fault the owner wants me to pay for the damages.
Now i'm not the smartest guy there but I thought full coverage insurance covers everything?
It.s bad enough I have a 90 dollar ticket to pay I don't want to have pay anything else. Sorry
to bug you guys just had to ask this.

Did you get insurance through the rental agency or use your own? If you used your own policy, you COULD be on the hook for loss of use time for the rental car while it's being repaired. You would have to get with your agent and see if that's covered or not. If you got the coverage through the rental company, you should be okay (though your own company will ding you on your premium when it comes time to renew because of the at fault accident).

OR did you rent from one of those fly by night companies?

I had the insurance through the rental company. They charge by the day 3 day minimum and they
take cash. Hope that helps.

If you pay through a credit card, most cover the insurance on the rental. you should also be covered through your car insurance on top of you paying for their daily insurance (you should be fully covered).

Maybe start by reading the fine print of the lease in regards to damage and liability, even with the insurance they offer. I would say the insurance you paid for to the rental car company just covers their car and your insurance for your POV will cover the other car that you got into the accident with. But then again I don't have the lease to read. There are clauses in all those documents I'm sure which are meant to protect the rental car company first and foremost.

Here's something I found on the net that you can read in regards to your situation. One important part I read is that if you were at fault in an accident because you were speeding, under the influence or other reckless error on your part, some insurance coverages that you had are void, which means the cost will be passed on to you.

If all you have to pay is $90 after being at fault for totaling the car, I would thank my lucky stars!
