Pretty cool review with pics and vids of Lake Tahoe 7/22

Postby steveo777 » Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:39 pm

Found this thanks to Gigi at Arnel's forums. Looked like a lot of fun!

http://rocksubculture.com/2012/07/23/jo ... a-7222012/

For me personally, Steve Perry has few peers in the vocal department, but he is not one to have a really unique sense of style, or run all over the stage during a show (and I’m not saying that is good or bad, but everyone takes this all in differently – what entertains and inspires and excites each of us is purely subjective).

I went into this Journey concert with some skepticism (having not seen them live), though also with an open mind about Arnel Pineda as lead vocalist, performing truly iconic songs.

With what I’d seen in concert videos, I felt that Pineda had incredible vocal ability, and sounded a lot like Steve Perry, but I could tell the difference, in that I felt (with these older performances on video) that Pineda maybe “oversang” the vocals (in range and dynamics) maybe a bit too much for my tastes (equivalent to maybe an electric guitar solo that goes a bit too much and over the top), and also I didn’t feel the raw – very raw – emotion that I got from Steve Perry singing these songs.

So jumping ahead to Sunday’s performance… Watching Pineda live – and listening to him – I really feel as though he has grown leaps and bounds into his role with Journey. I didn’t feel with this live show that he “oversang” even one note – he had incredible control, but really his voice is more powerful and persuasive when he is actually holding back a little bit, and more importantly, with this show, with these songs, I felt real emotion. Maybe not quite as “raw” as with Steve Perry, but Pineda is a different person with his own experiences, and it all felt real and genuine, and that is what is most important. And this also made his voice stand out as unique, and while he can sing the songs in a similar manner to how we expect to hear them from the studio recordings, I think he has found – and is comfortable with – his own unique (and incredibly impressive) voice.

Additionally, he brings such energy and joy to the stage, it is just awesome to watch him and come along for the ride, and I think in this regard, he brings something entirely new to Journey that is his own. He brings real youth and excitement and optimism to the band, and I think it comes across as quite contagious to those of us lucky enough to watch these live shows and see the band members having fun and really enjoying each other and themselves, and I think Pineda really helps the band to connect with the audience in a unique and personal way. And maybe becoming part of this band will keep it and it’s music alive longer than it would have otherwise.

So in my own meandering and non-linear way, the point I am getting to is that, in spite of my instincts to the contrary (from an abstract point of view), I actually accept Arnel Pineda as the lead singer of Journey, and I think he is a choice that is so unlikely, it actually makes complete sense as well.

Weak review. Pineda has been with band five years and this guy is acting like he just got off the boat. The guy is saying the same thing people were saying back in 2008. Is there really nothing else to bring to the table here?
I mean it's been five years. Augeri was on the downside of his tenure with the group at that same point, Perry was five hundred shows and five albums in when he hit that peak. Yet all we can say here is that Arnel Pineda STILL sounds like Steve Perry? No mention of eclipse or for that matter any of the setlist though there is a picture of a crumpled setlist with the name San Bernardino on the bottom of it.

Apparently Scott Smith washed ashore perfectly fine to play with Loverboy for this show. Reviewer's a dope. How about a little research on the band history.

Well, in rechecking up on some Loverboy history, I found Cain's footprint on a song.

I found his Nirvana blurb interesting. He basically says younger concert goers are unaware or untouched by Nirvana and that he is surprised.

I think this just goes to show how its only the snobby critics who hold Grunge to such an esteemed position. For most of us, grunge doesn't stand the test of time...it doesn't resonate. Whether its a lot of us on here who it NEVER resonated with or even those who liked it then......its bands like Journey still standing, and drawing in new and young fans.

Pearl Jam is in the Top 10 tours at this moment. Foo Fighters (which is basically Nirvana) routinely sells out gigs world wide and headlines stadium festivals. Maybe it's just older fans but there are still a lot of them out there as the Foos demonstrate year in and year out.

But if the younger folks aren't embracing a band (Nirvana) that was said to have revolutionized music - doesn't that suggest that maybe they aren't as iconic as the critics and music powers at the time made them out to be? Hendrix died early and young too - but he is still inspiring musicians.

I'm not saying that bands from that area are completely gone, but Grunge COMPLETELY took over and bands like Journey were ostracized...yet where exactly are all of those grunge acts that Nirvana was said to have inspired? I mostly see rock bands out on the touring circuit...and even these guys in their 50's, 60's and 70's seem to be creating more new material than these acts from just 10-15 years ago.

Regarding the Foos - some of their older stuff sounds like mumbled depressing garbage like Nirvana, but they have progressed into a pretty well rounded rock-n-roll band. Learn to Fly, for example, is closer to melodic rock than Grunge in my opinion.

Yeah, have to agree that Foo Fighters are pretty far removed from the grunge sound that was Nirvana.

Overall nice Journey pix but not all that excited about the Arnel crotch shots or a few of the bass player shots.

Everything can be nitpicked. What I see from the vids on the reviewers site - a more controled Schon on solos; a much more controlled Pineda on stage. The guys looked to be fit and having a good time (first time I have seen Friga smiling on stage in while). The crowd was entertained and having a blast. The sound seemed good (though can't really tell for sure from the vids) from the audience reaction.

Decent review, great pictures, and good to hear about Neal being reined in. Now, to make the tour especially magnificent:

- A Deen vocal or two
- Resonate
- Chain of Love
- Adding Who's Cryin' Now and I'll Be Alright Without You
- Resonate
- Ditching LTS
- Voluntary mutual interaction between Neal and anyone else on stage
- Resonate

Then I'll give them a gold star.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Huge mistake not having this guy sing. It makes them more of a band, not less.

Nice. 2 deeper cuts that don't suck (e.g., La Do Da, Keep on Runnin, and some of the other shit songs they've played the last few years).

Loverboy was on the Escape tour back '81. No doubt they played & wrote together with Journey some while on the road then.

I know a Journey fan in town who tracks over to Tahoe every time Journey performs there (they seem to alternate between the Reno Events Center and Harvey's Amphitheater each tour year). He says the outdoor setting up in the high altitude makes for fabulous concert music & sound. They always seem to schedule the Saturday date coinciding with the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament over there, too. My friend sits in the cheap seat up high and tries to spot stars making their way to their seats down up front. One year (Arnel's 1st w/band), he told me Tony Romo was there w/his then g/f Jessica Simpson...and several other male sports athletes (can't remember who now).

Now that I've watched the clips, I think I'll stop looking at future ones. I spent a shitton of money for this upcoming concert and it looks increasingly as though I might as well have set my Benjamins on fire... minus the warm glow.
