He only has 2 songwriting credits with the band.. so he's only receiving royalty checks for those

As Eclipse has fallen off of the face of the planet, not much coming from that source.

Just checking Amazon downloads and we can see Infinity outselling Eclipse 10 to 1, Escape outselling it 9 to 1, Evolution 2 to 1 just to list a few and that's just one store's mp3 sales.

The album isn't even in the Top 2,000 in sales at Wal-Mart, the store the CD is tied to.

yup... I'd venture... compared to Nelly... Perry is still getting "paid like a mutherfucker"....

At Wal-Mart, Revelation is actually outselling Eclipse 10 to 1. We're talking very small numbers for both but still.

“Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” has received much praise from critics and has been one of the favorite films at several film festivals. Even the band members of Journey love the film and feel that it captured “the emotions” of the band at their time of transition. As for Steve Perry, no word from his camp on his thoughts on the project.

“We didn’t speak directly with Steve for this film but we did communicate with him through his attorney. We needed to get permission to use his songs in the film,” said Brogden. “He was very cooperative. When we finished the film before we released it we contacted his attorney again to see if Steve wanted to remove the parts of the film that discussed him and through his attorney he told us that it was not necessary. He has been sent a copy of the film but we don’t know if he has watched it or not.”

Well, well...by now most legal eagles have figured out that Steve Perry is not Journey. There are surviving, working artists who still need to pay their bills. The show will go on.

What you said doesn't make sense. The "Legal Eagles" do indeed know that Steve Perry still does have a variable say in the Journey Universe, hence the reason they used due diligence in requesting permissions and giving him the film to review. Ramona Diaz was running on a shoestring budget to begin with. Perry could have given her permission for every song EXCEPT DSB and that would have still sunk her ship as the movie's whole premise is set around that one tune.

I'm not knocking anybody here but just because you become a"full time" member of a group, you don't automatically inherit an interest in copyright or a right to license for material you didn't haven't a part in creating.

Journey's a classic rock band whose heyday was in the 80s. The fact that they are still able to tour is pretty amazing. I'm just glad that there's new stuff out there to either watch or listen to. I don't care how much it sells. Sales do not equate to quality. Sometimes it does, but not always. I mean, Jeez, that "Friday" song was a huge hit and it was a gawd awful piece of garbage.
I'd buy the DVD. Saw a lot of the early clips and it looked pretty interesting.

The main problem with the flick (from what the critics have said) is that after the initial 20 minutes there is no more story to tell. It becomes a promo video for the Manila DVD after that. Only one songs gets played in full though and of course that's at the end and is DSB. Even the distributor has said it needs to be trimmed down by 20 or 30 minutes, just not much compelling storytelling after the first part of the film. this will get aired on PBS from what it looks like when all is said and done. Doesn't sound like it's going to make it to HBO or those channels judging by the distributor's history, more of an Indie production is what they will be pushing it as.

So if this thing makes it to a theater, blue-ray, DVD or PBS...
do the songwriters get paid everytime it gets played or sold..
or is it a 1 time licensing agreement they pay up front?
Perry's good natured bonhomie & the world’s most charmin smile, knocked fans off their feet. Sportin a black tux, gigs came alive as he swished around the stage thrillin audiences w/ charisma that instantly burnt the oxygen right out of the venue.TR.com

I believe normal royalty rules will apply. Per airing and per media sold. Individual Journey members may waive their royalty rights but I seriously doubt that they would, the band didn't finance it so the artists should get paid what is rightfully theirs.

That's why I don't think the demand for this flick will be substatial outside of the Philippines or the Filipino community. That was the primary marketing target from day one of production of this flick anyways. You can tell this simply by who produced it. Had this not been the case, the flick would have been done a lot more balanced.

But this flick was produced for the new Journey era. And it seems that the primary story for the new Journey era is AP and where he came from. again, I'll probably get a hold of a copy one way or the other with the main purpose of watching it to see how acurate it is compared to what I remember how things were back in the 80's and AP.
