Hard topic: Race

Postby Rick » Thu Aug 09, 2012 6:49 am

Would you let your daughter date outside of her race?

I know this is as touchy as it gets, so be civil in your answers. Andrew's got enough to clean up here as it is.

Sure. Race is pretty much physical appearance dictated by geographic ancestry. Basically if your roots are from a place where the sun shines a lot you are probably dark where as if your ancestors lived in extreme northern climates you may be of fair complexion. On the inside though, everything is still is the same. Just like if you buy a car with a different colored paint job, the engine doesn't change because of the color of the paint.

No Muslims and no Hip-Hoppers pretty much covered conversations with our daughter. Other than those, there was a lot of lattitude. In the end we have been proud of her choices.

Besides being about a thousand years backwards, what's right with them? I have zero tolerance for their beliefs, which I understand they act out on quite frequently. To wit:

Are you sure you're not describing the Catholic Church?

If they ever attack us again, you're gonna see how patriotic we are. There will be a rag head hanging from every tree.

Sorry, that is not patriotic, it's just plain bigotry. Blaming every single Muslim on earth for the actions of these terrorists is like blaming every catholic for the actions of those predator priests.

Sorry for turning the thread to religion, when it was about race.

That said, I have no problem with a person's nationality. Skin color does not matter. I should have been clearer.
Some cultures I have a problem with and there is a difference between that and race.

I have to agree with ebake here. While there are certainly a high percentage of muslims to either engage in or at least tolerate acts of violence, it's still not right to say that there will be "a rag head hanging from every tree." As much as I dislike Islam, that's just wrong.

If I had one child and they married a African American, their children would be considered more African American than white, just as Obama, and others consider themselves and they usually marry African Americans. I would become that white relative, way back in some black family's history. I don't think that most African Americans want to mix any more than many of the whites who are against it. There is more often than not, just too much heartache for family and friends to take into consideration what two people feel that they be allowed to do. Let your children connect with whoever they wish but they should not expect an unqualified acceptance.
PEACE!

My daughter, Brooke's first boyfriend was half black. People are people. You're going to find good eggs and bad eggs in every race. I admit, being in a biracial relationship adds stress, but if you're strong enough to deal with the idiots, then you'll be alright. With that said, of course I would prefer her to marry someone just like me, but how often does that happen? She married a Naval nuke tech, who's deployed on the Enterprise, and due home sometime in November. And yep, he's a white boy. As far as Neelee goes, she's not even interested yet, but I know that's going to change, like next week. She starts as a Sophomore at the end of the month, will be driving in March, and I'm sure there will be boyfriends. Someone just shoot me now.

No, we were discussing it at work, and I thought it would make for a good topic here, and I did want to know what the consensus here thinks about it versus what my coworkers do. Everyone seems to have the same opinion on it, for the most part.
