I'm loving Ross's "downs" on this. Not much else to say is there?

The band sounds great!

You know, people can say whatever they want about who does or doesn't sound most like Perry, but how about Cain? That guy sounds a lot like Rolie to me. Cool stuff.

I'm pretty sure JC is trying to sound like Rolie on this...

Cain's arguably the most important cog in the Journey machine, but he's no Rolie vocally. When I caught them in Louisville, it was pretty clear to me that he struggled, but did a decent job.

"No Greg Rolie" vocally?? Are you kidding? Rolie has no vocal ability. Clearly that's why Herbie went out and got a singer. To criticize Jon, who's merely trying to mimic Greg in this song... totally unfair.

Clearly you can see and hear Cain struggling on this... so yeah.. "he's not Rolie" is a pretty accurate statement.

No one sings at Journey's level having "no vocal ability"... and "Rolie having no vocal ability " is a bit of a stretch... yes Rolie's no Perry... but Cain ain't no Rolie either...

IF you've read any of the Herbie interviews, you'd know why he hired Fleishman, then Perry... because the label told him to.... NOT because of Rolie...

I've got some of Cain's solo albums and he can definitely sing and somewhat well. And man, I've gotta say that what I have heard this year sounds far superior to what was heard last year. Could there actually be growth and improvement in this band? AP has improved a bunch!

I was do distracted by FM's fictional Rolie remark
yesterday I didn't even listen to the song

Cain isn't Rolie (smooth, velvet vox) and AP is
not in Perry's league ~so I do not over-expect with the
recent version of this band. But overall it was
OK, and I would have loved to have heard this rather
than some of the same ol' same ol' show after show.
I try not to judge too much, good or bad, based on the
youtubies, but the sound seemed much better than
the catastrophic noise I heard last year. Still, other than
missing Pat and Loverboy, I'm not sad about missing
Journey in 2012.

You know, he's never quite figured out what to do with himself. I try
not to judge him based on the fact that, other than his vox, he's
different?!?! on stage, it's a turnoff and I can't quite put my finger on why.
A lot of rock stars can't dance, a lot of them wear stupid outfits on stage, a lot
of them are short?!?!? Sorry, unless he's stage center with his mouth
open, he doesn't look right. :?

This is nothing new for Journey frontmen bar Jeff.

I can't speak for all of them as I've only seen
Perry w/the band (and of course Pineda). I have seen Jeff perform live
and judging by that performance he doesn't
have a single problem knowing what to do w/himself
on stage. However, rather than going out on
a limb, I'll leave this open for those who do know.
Perry knew what to do with himself on stage at all times,
he had a definite chemistry w/the band and his
audience. Perry pretty much removed himself from
the limelight during a Smitty, Cain, Schon Solo.
He never looked out of place, abnormal or like
he didn't know what to do w/himself on stage and
he knew what to say, when to say it and how to get
the audience pumped up.

AP's improving on some things, e.g. getting the heck
out of the way during bandmate solos ...a+

I thought we were talking about Journey singers who are short, can't dance, and wear stupid outfits. Perry, Pineda, and Augeri all qualify.

Well with the potential exception of the patented Augeri wiggle...

I agree with every word of your reply except that. There is one instance were he just looked completely ridiculous. On the Houston DVD during Neal's solo on SIL when Jon is playing rythm and Steve is standing at the keys holding down that single key and acting like he's jammin'. Ordinarily, the keyboard part during that portion of the song is just a single note which is triggered by software and it's held continuously until Jon releases it. But, apparently Perry felt left out during that extended solo portion of the song because everybody else had something to do except him. If it weren't for the magic marker on the key to let Perry know which one to press, he'd have absolutely no clue what to do.  He does look very proud of himself though.  Here's Perry aka Journey's backup keyboard player...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 5mM#t=194s

That's also the version of SIL where Smitty decided to add some much needed cow bell to the beginning of the song.

Being a keyboard player whose favorite band is Journey, it's no stretch to assume I have all of Cain's solo material. And, you're right, he can definitely sing and he's got a very good voice - as long as he's not venturing too far outside of his zone. The songs he sings on his solo albums sound great. But when he gets too far outside the box, he struggles.

Neal is a damn good singer as well. I love the songs he sings on his solo albums. And, personally, I think Neal's voice is a little more appealing than Jon's. Granted, Neal has a somewhat limited range but he has a good voice.

Smitty's nod to the SNL skit via his addition of cowbell to the beginning of SIL Live in Houston:
