Any speculation as to why Arnel is not cordless on the MIC?

Is it possible that the extra mic could be used for something other than Arnel using it? If you were there for the entire show, did he or anyone use the extra mic that you saw on the stage during that show? If no one used it, perhaps it was a backup that they never needed. Or is it even possible that they wanted to use it for some other purpose like to record audio or to monitor audio from on the stage?

There's no need to "record audio" or "monitor" audio" in that way, especially when every sound the band makes goes through a the mixing board and the mixing engineer can monitor it and record it from there.

Its just backup mic for Arnel.

Could be. Sometimes he likes to run and I've seen him toss the wireless mic in the air and catch it when he runs across the stage, as part of his showmanship. Certain songs do not having him darting about and I can now see why he may prefer both options.

The only other possible reason for the wired mic besides "better audio quality'... is that some places have "dropouts"... meaning spots on the stage where, for whatever reason, the wireless receiver simply cannot stay connected to the wireless mic.

Not only is there no need for it there's also no desire for the audio that would be captured via that mic. If it's sitting on Deen's riser the only thing it's going to capture is the drums and maybe some of the higher notes during Neal's leads and the lower notes of Ross'. Other than that, everything is mixed and processed together, sent back to the stage and delivered through the giant speaker towers that are suspended above and at the front of the stage. Arnel's voice, nor Jon's keys are delivered via any of the amps/spkrs which are actually on stage. 99.9% of the boots many of us possess were created via the sound board.

Yeah, it's probably just an extra mic set aside to be available in some special type of situation perhaps. But in regards to what it could do, sound works in very mysterious ways. I think I was reading up on a record company, I think it was Capital Records, a while back where they were able to create outstanding recorded sound quality. It was this top secret company thing as to how they were doing this for many years. It turns out that what the secret was is they had built a room deep below the actual recording studio and in this enclosed room were monitors that were hooked up to the recording studio equipment. While they would be recording a band, they would also be recording the bands sounds that were being played out of the monitors underground in the enclosed room.

So this example is just a suggestion as to how sound works in mysterious ways. Why would a room with monitors in it enhance what is being recorded in the studio? It's like when I am playing one of my synths at home and I'm learning how to play a classical piece via the cd player. I can have one headphone in one ear that is plugged into the synth for listening to the notes that I am playing on the synth while I listen to the actual classical piece being played through the sound system of my house via cd player. If I only play the synth the sound volume is down low coming out of the one headphone. However if I play the synth on the same exact notes as the cd is playing, for some reason the sound coming from that one ear piece seems to go up in volume. Has anyone ever tried that before? What makes it do that? What makes the earphone sound louder if an outside source plays the same notes?

So I'm wondering if that mic on the stage could have anything to do with something like that. I'm no audio technician person but I've seen quite a few times that a mic was set up at a distance from a drum kit on a stage. Is there any youtube footage of the concert where we can see the object you’re saying is an extra mic? Maybe it’s not even a mic. Maybe it’s a small cam on a stand to record video for the production of a music video or to record footage for whatever reason. I’ve also seen quite a few small cams on stands to do this just so a camera man doesn’t get in the way of the show if they want to record footage at a specific angle and distance on the stage..

When one actually learns how sound (audio) works, there's nothing mysterious about it at all..

There's nothing "secret" about that technique... it's been used since the 70's.... It was taught to me in audio school in the 80's

That's the cumulative effect of the same pitch coming from 2 different sources...

Again... no.

What you are describing is a "poor mans" recording technique... Lots of bands toss up a mic to record themselves.. but the result is usually not very listenable... If Journey wanted to record their concert audio, they have way too much money, and lots of technically adept engineers to capture cleaner audio at the mixing desk (soundboard)

The mic is simply a backup.

Yeah I tend to think it may have been just a backup mic as well. But without total fact we really can't tell for sure. What is helpful would be to know from someone that was at the entire show, if anyone from the band used it at any time during the show. I went to a show that was recorded for later release on DVD and I noticed things that looked like a mic on a stand with a hard wire that they never used during the show. However after getting the DVD after its release, I noticed video shots of the drummer and keyboard players that was shot from exactly where I had seen what I thought was the mic on a stand near the keyboardist and drummer. That's why I made the suggestion that it quite possibly could have been one of those small video cams set up to capture footage without having some dude with a camera get in the way on the stage.

It's all just speculation at this point and nothing anyone suggests as a possibility needs to get anyone worked up over.

It's all just speculation to you.. as you said you aren't an "audio technician".

I went to school for this stuff..

There is no practical reason to to record audio for release using one mic onstage.
  • one mic cannot record stereo audio (which is needed for a DVD...)
  • audio quality is better when individual instruments are on individual channels/tracks so they can be it can be mixed to stereo later

The simple fact that Arnel uses it negates it's use for anything else, other than a backup mic.

It's just a backup mic.

I could see someone confusing this as a mic if they seen it from a distance set up somewhere on the stage.

Balut is something no one would get me to eat, not even to do it on stage. Rip is a different kind of friend than I am if he asks him about that. To me it doesn't matter and I don't really care. I won't and have never brought up anything Journey related to him because I knew him way before all this took place. To be more accurate, Arnel was very much a mentor to me. He was just a local singer to some, but he was already famous to me. If for some miraculous reason he did tell me about it though, I still wouldn't tell anyone what it was. Like all the vids, pix and personal information, I don't owe anyone anything, that's why I don't disclose any of it. Not that it matters to anyone else but me, it's not my place nor is it my business. If hee wishes it disclosed, he'll talk about it.

You must have missed the lessons on class and humility.

Sure I could have. Maybe you can elaborate on it for me.

Your previous mentor not good enough?

It's quoted for a reason... to keep the conversation from getting "vague or ambiguous"

What does my previous mentor have to do with anything outside the music world? Absolutely nothing and that's why I was asking for clarification. He was my mentor in the music world. Has nothing to do with my points of view on anything outside of music performance and vocal delivery. I never said he was my mentor for the way I do things outside of music. You for whatever reason are mixing the two into one. That's why with your short little sentence you were being vague and ambiguous, not being specific to anything exclusively and in doing so, covering a very large area.

Nothing you posted says specifically what he "mentored" you in... THAT is "vague and ambiguous".

And you qualify the specificity of Arnel's mentoring with "to be more accurate"... which you place in IN FRONT of the mentoring part.

Since you do not define anything specific, the only inference one can make FROM YOUR CONTEXT is that you mean he mentored you in everything...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Laughing his ass off? Why?

I specifically state that Arnel was known in the Philippines as a local singer, but to me he was much more than that. It was because of that reason he was more of a mentor to me, and since at that time I shared the same goals and interests in a career as he did, he was my mentor.

You reply "Your previous mentor not good enough?"

What does your reply have to do with my initial post?

Obviously the schooled "sound engineer" isn't too busy with doing sound engineering stuff right now.
