Soooo.... Horror Films Anyone????

It is halloween season after all again. So what favorite horror/ any other type of films
do you guys enjoy this time of year? Is anyone seeing the new sisnter or paranormal
activity (yes there is another one ) movies this month?

I use to be a fan. Still am if there is some originality to them. It seems they've all been done before in some form or another. I'd have to say "The Exorcist" when

I saw it the first time sent chills down my spine and not in a good fucking way. One of my favs. though has always been the first "Hellraiser" movie. Pinhead & the

Going way back but the only horror film that ever really scared me was the original Night Of The Living Dead. The first Halloweeen film was not bad.

After the original "Paranormal Activity" heightened my awareness of the potential for a creepy flick, that was the LAST STRAW for me when it came to new-age horror. The genre has been severely suffering. However, I've been hearing nothing but great things about "Sinister." I'm not 100% sold and it would take a little bit more convincing for me to spend money at the cinema on another horror movie. Hmmm.

Saw it. Boring and horrible. Nothing happens. Even the big exorcism finale fails to deliver on the pea soup, projectile vomit goods. Save ur cash.

The Shining is more funny then scary though. My wife rented the video back in '96 and we got drunk and watched it at home. We had to replay the bathroom scene about a dozen times it was so funny. Especially how Jack looks when he hears Grady say who's been sent from the outside.

Phantasm IV nearly undid all the damage the third film did, and it was cool to see the return of Bill Thornbury (Jody).

I think Phantasm 1 is very much one of a kind. It follows a surreal nightmarish dream logic. The second one is a bad action/road movie, with none of the mystique of the first one. The third is balls-to-the-wall camp and slapstick. Say what you will, but at least it confidently commits to being goofy. The fourth is just a boring cheap clip show. Not even much of a movie. Sad really. Tarantino's bud, Roger Avary, wrote a cool script called Phatasm 1999 back in the day. I think Bruce Campbell was even attached. But Coscarelli could never secure financing. Hopefully, we'll get a part 5 at some point.

I think the funniest horror show we ever watched was "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"..
Went to a theater back in I think was '81 & couldn't figure out why every one was dressed so funny..
I don't think I stopped laughing for a week....

Back in '96? I don't remember what movies I saw in the theatre in 1996, let alone what movies I rented...

Anyway, I don't think The Shining is funny, but I do think the acting does NOT hold up to repeat viewings. This was always in my top 3-4 scary movies of all time, and I still watch it a couple times a year, but it's getting more unbearable to watch Shelley Long, Nicholson, and little Danny Torrance's horrible acting with each viewing...

but the 1st time I saw it with my older sis..way back when...

the part ..when the folks are in the glass bottom boat & that
decapitated head bobs up ..seeing it thru the glass..
my sister screamed bloody murder in the theater & I just sort of
"slinked" (if thats a word) down in me chair....wanting to hide from
her screaming...
& to this day ..no matter how many times she watches it..she screams..

I was 11 when I saw the first "Jaws" in the theater. That has to be the last time a movie scared the complete ass out of me.

I agree with regard to the first movie as a standalone film save that Cosc wasn't done exploring (exploiting) the story he'd concocted.

For a movie that came a decade later, the first sequel is pretty solid and could've been a James Cameron-styled kitschy clusterfuck, but it evaded that. The new spheres were cool, too.

The third movie is a perfect example of a creator who doesn't know where his own story is going, or what to do with it. He introduces new characters and throws shit into the pot and gives it a quick stir. Reggie Bannister looks lost throughout the film.

Honestly, I'm glad Phantasm 1999 never happened. It would've been a more horror-action type film than Phantasm II. I can't believe Evil Dead has gotten the reboot treatment. It was already a retooled production of a late '70s short film by Raimi. I bet the new version will be a predictable, CG FX-laden bore.

If Don wants to leave his concept alone, that's okay. I doubt he could even get a final film financed through Kickstarter at this point, and I don't want to see a Phantasm movie with the budget and effects of a craptacular SyFy / Asylum joint feature.
