Closest Perry Soundalike I've Ever Heard

Postby JRNYMAN » Thu Oct 18, 2012 8:27 am

This vid is actually by a guy covering AWYWI note-for-note on guitar but instead of just playing along with Journey, he is playing along with a recording of his band covering AWYWI.
Anyway, the singer/drummer, Roy Nichol, (hmm... where have I seen that combination before...?) does the best Perry cover I've ever heard hands down. The band's cover of AWYWI is pretty damned good as well.

It is a very eerie similarity, but I'd wanna see how the guy sounds without the effects.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Wow, unreal cover of "Mother, Father." He has a shade of "Dio-ish" vibrato in his voice that for me keeps the "soundalike" crown still sitting on top of Deen's head:

...Although, those are studio recorded demos, I have no doubt the guy could still kill live. Funny that both he and Deen are also drummers LOL...As was Perry!

PS, looks like the guy is the drummer for April Wine now?

LOL, this may sound strange, but I don't remember what I sounded like singing most of those songs, and I don't want to look them up to remind me

Wouldn't it be a trip if without the effects he sounded like the singer from Slipknot or one of the other Gorers....

Ya know the sound a male peacock makes? If you take that and mix it with the braying of a donkey and add just a hint of dolphin..... it sounded like that. Image

I think this sound is so pro-tooled and on major auto tune that the average person may not catch the too comfortable side musicians now have in their corner.......back in the day it was your voice or nothing

I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

The guy has great pipes. Very, very close to the real thing. Just a bit more airy.
I've never thought Deen to be a soundalike either but his voice is probably one of the most beautiful I've heard.

I would think someone who could play and a band that could sound so much like Journey would want to do originals to make a real name and music career for themselves.
