Yea, and Steve Augeri is their loyal "brother." You need a wake up call. End of the day - Journey is a buisness.

I wish Arnel the best...If some of you long time fans remember back in the day....Steve Perry got sick on the Raised on Radio tour but somehow played night after night.....Atlanta, Ga was where he actually went to the hospital for being ill....The tour was cut short in Alaska due to a sinus infection which lead to the ending of a great era in ROCK......Neal made Steve feel so bad about it, that Journey never really reformed again outside of the studio.
And can you imagine the size of his sinuses?![]()
![]()
That's too bad though. They were absolutely on top of the world.
If you call firing Ross and Smitty on top of the world, then I guess........ The rods were knocking and there was saw dust in the crank case....the Journey engine was about to blow and it did. What Perry did to Journey for ROR is a Rock n Roll travesty. (" it seemed like a good idea at the time").
Gosh oh mighty...You watch way too much TV..................The split on Raised on Radio was something the whole band agreed upon...If you have any computer skills, read Jonathan Cains interview from 1987....Steve Perry really didn't want to tour behind Raised on Radio....The family problems where so bad at that time( his mother passing and a DUI his daughter was charged with being under age of drinking).........It was very clear in 1986-1987 that Steve Perry was done with Journey for awhile..........Steve Perry tried to release a solo album in 1987 and again in 1989 called Against the Wall......But Herbie Herbert made that impossible because he wanted Journey back together so he could by another house overseas....thats why he dedicated the song " WHY CAN"T THIS NIGHT GO ON FOREVER" to his loyal fans on that tour in 1986 ...Do something your whole life and try to imagine it over, but nobody knows but you....Depression sets in along with life changing health issues.....until you have walked the walk......shut the fuck up !!!
Gosh
Just to be fair, according to Herbie, Steve wanted to quit after the Escape tour. I'm not sure anything Neal said made that happen, although it might have made it easier. It was also mentioned that it was absolutely Perry's insistence that Valory and Smith be replaced for ROR.
Ross Valory was replaced in 1985-1986 because he had ongoing court dates and could not be on tour....He wanted to fly around and be a part time bassist....NOT ACCEPTABLE ON TOUR....So, Randy Jackson was asked to fill in on studio time and Neal asked him to tour...Richard marx also was considered for Jonathan cains part because of foolish turmoil at that time.
Steve Smith was replaced because his family life was more important than the family life with the band... He wanted to take a full crew on the road....In music it's very hard to make the stars happy, but when you add a family of 4 and tour.......It's just nuts !!!.....If you need to be at home......THEN STAY HOME.....Does not make you weak.....It makes you a family man.....I get it.......It all worked out in the end......Steve Smith didn't act too happy on the directors cut of "Behind the Music"......But later on went to say it was a good call on Perrys part to see he cared enough to make me take care of business at home......To this day Steve has been booking dates with his jazz band and could not be happier...( he is hoping for a Journey re-union if the band gets inducted in the Hall of Fame----I'm excited too if that happens)...
This is definitely a version of history I've not heard. Tell us more.

And, if Arnel loses his voice before Neal is ready to quit - they will find a way to continue.

It looks so hard to sing at that level that i suffer with him when i watch him sing !......to know that every night he's gotta reach those notes or his job is at risk makes me feel bad for him when he cant reach them !
He gives everything.....he gets all my respect !!
SCHON could always relax a little instead of oversoloing for no reason but hey !.....it's always been this way right ?
BENATAR and LOVERBOY were great !........

Anyone else get the feeling that the changes are coming?

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Journey lead singer Arnel Pineda has contracted severe laryngeal and esophageal inflammation, forcing the cancellation of several of the band's tour dates, including its Sat., Nov. 10, 2012 stop at Van Andel Arena.
The show will be rescheduled for Jan. or Feb. of 2013, according to a press release. No specific date has been determined yet.
Tickets for the Nov. 10 concert will be honored for the new date. Refunds are also available at point of purchase.
Pineda is under doctor's orders not to sing for the next week, so the band pulled the plug on five shows taking place between Nov. 8 and Nov. 14, 2012. Pat Benatar and Loverboy were the opening acts.
As a consolation to Journey ticketholders, SMG Grand Rapids, which manages Van Andel Arena events, is offering buy-one-get-one-free tickets to the Wine, Beer and Food Festival taking place Nov. 8-10, 2012 at DeVos Place. Bring your Journey ticket to the DeVos Place box office to redeem the deal.

In the same circumstances, I bet Steve Augeri would've put a smile on his face, hit the stage, and made the most of it. Wise of Arnel to protect his money-maker, but Azoff and Co. are going to be pissed! You can't tour the way these guys do, and sing this catalog nightly and expect to hold up. You just can't...

seems to me Arnel has them by the balls (or neal by the sock) when it comes to his health.

You missed the point. Augeri had almost the exact same symptoms and ailments, but there was NO canceling or postponing. I bet you Journey has never postponed/canceled this many shows in one tour as they have in the last two weeks.

Singers get sick. It happens. Not like a guitarist, keyboardist, or drummer than can go out and do the same thing night after night whether they're sick or not. The dude is relying on these two very tiny flaps of vocal chord (about as big as your pinky finger nail) to get him through a very tough catalog. For the most part, he's excelled at doing so, but everyone gets sick, even rock stars. He's also out there doing meet and greets and traveling across the US. I don't know where you work, but in my office MANY people are sick right now. Imagine shaking hands with 100s of typical American across the country. Try staying germ free in cold/flu season under those conditions.
Of course, if he didn't do the meet and greets, people would complain about that too.
Many singers in the past few years have cancelled tours over vocal abuse (Adele, Mayer, etc.). Celine Dione had some nuttyass virus and she had to cancel gigs too. I would imagine that Arnel got back on the road with Journey after this last illness not fully recovered. I knew when they said that he'd be back at it in November that was pushing it. It's a lot of pressure to perform. Journey's built more space between shows and I think still do some shows with the tunes dropped a half step. They're doing all they can do, but people get sick.fightingilliniJRNY wrote:steveo777 wrote:It isn't a matter of having them by the balls, it's a matter of his health and being able to get well so they can continue. The difference here is that Augeri was not the singer that Arnel is. Never was. Good singer, but was always pushing his voice to the limit with Journey. For Arnel, it's not that way. He's twice the singer Steve A was. Not a slam on Augeri, it's just the truth.
I don't get the hard on that some here have to see the guy/Journey fail, especially after all this time.

Okay, but it's quite apparent that the band has learned from their mistakes, so why go on and on about what they did ten, twenty, thirty years ago? At this point, they're taking care of their singer. GREAT. One could also look at Tapegate as taking care of their singer too. He couldn't perform but there was a lot of pressure and contracts. Nobody knows if Augeri said "Hey, I'll mime until I get better". Could've happened. They did what they thought they had to do. Sucked, but they did. MANY singers go out with tapes of them singing that aren't, Celine Dione to name one that you wouldn't expect. It may have been a group decision as loss of voice should be a temporary thing provided there's no permanent damage. It's ancient history at this point and has zero to do with Pineda.
