Arnel has the chops to sing most types of rock songs, as demonstrated by his chameleon vocal acrobatics when covering other bands.

If they form a different entity... why keep a guy who struggles with the english language and not go with someone like JSS who doesn't have those issues? Stupid idea if you ask me. Arnel is a parrot. He may be a nice parrot, but that's what he is. He mimics the words as close as he can, but he has no feeling behind them. No conviction. Steve MF'ing Perry had conviction. Yes... he sang differently live, but at least when you heard him sing, he knew the MEANING to the words he was singing. He helped WRITE the words he was singing. There is NO comparison.

I'd be all for them forming a new group ala Bad English! Just get someone who sounds like he SPEAKS english.

Arnel speaks English. He's gotten better, much better. I do realize that you probably haven't been paying attention for the past couple years. I didn't really hear any issues with his english last summer when I saw them at the Gorge. Filipinos are taugh English and for you to think he doesn't understand the words he sings is just flat out ignorant. Doctors come out of colleges in the Philippines with all the credentials they need to practice medicine in the USA. Maybe to your ears he isn't delivering the words properly (accent and diction), but trust me, I'd bet my left nut his understanding and ability to articulate are as good as yours and mine. Make no mistake, he knows the words he sings as well as you or I.

And WTF do doctors coming out of the Philippines have to do with Arnel having an accent you asshole???

Arnel's diction issues are rampant on live recordings and diminish the songs. Comparatively, Perry's histrionics wreck that one. Arnel's version has balls, bringing power to an otherwise powerless ballad. The only balls in Perry's are the ones that are being squeezed to unleash those high notes.

I am glad Perry's histrionics were brought up live. He was not the "be all end all" in concert.

Yup.
I've heard all the relevant live recordings and I haven't heard a single rendition of OA from Perry that sounds as good as Arnel's. Obviously it doesn't make him the better singer overall, live or otherwise, but you run the risk of inciting a nervous breakdown in our resident Loons to suggest Perry isn't utterly flawless.

Fuckers need a hearing aid and a therapist.

And we all love how your opinion trumps all Gideon. Truly, we are clearly not worthy.

In the interest of preempting any further miscommunication between myself and Loons, Spoons, and other facets of the tuxedo tailed strait-jacket community, let me be both blunt and clear in the enduring spirit of Melodic Rock:

My opinion on Arnel’s renditions vis a vis Perry’s is just that: an opinion. It is not fact, was not said by me to be fact, nor was it suggested to be fact-like. It is a matter of preference: most of you prefer Perry’s take, I don’t. Make no mistake, my understanding that this is a matter of opinion is what separates me from some of you.

Traditionally, this place is pretty liberal with criticism—as long as it’s directed at specific targets. Schon, Cain, Valory, and Castronovo are by far the most abused names. Herbert, Augeri, Rolie, Dunbar, Smith, and Pineda are up there, too. In those situations, the pattern has been to either aggressively participate or observe in detachment.

But when some brazen fuck dares to offer a dissenting opinion about the great, infallible Steve Perry? Christ Almighty, sound the alarms, rally the troops, man your stations, because shots have been fired across the bow of the SPS Retard.

The absolute creepiness and inexcusable foolishness of this cult-like mentality is self-evident; surely I need not remind you of the unpleasant consequences of what happens when morons deify a man for no good reason.

I’ve long come to terms with the fact that a not inconsiderable segment of the Melodic Rock community misrepresents and caricaturizes the things I have to say in an effort to de-legitimize their validity. The gloves came off a long while back when I understood that this is place is nothing more than a message board for the purpose of exchanging opinions about a common interest.

But the rest of you seem to take it so personally that it is my fondest hope that this helps each of you come to terms with the truth: Steve Perry is probably my all-time favorite singer, but was neither flawless or divine as either musician or man. The things I say about him are no different from things that have been said about others by others on these boards, with often glowing reception.

If you want me to stop, you have two options: one, convince Andrew to ban me; two, adopt a universal policy wherein none of the current or previous members of Journey are to be criticized in any respect.

Otherwise, I have two words for you: fair play.

I would have used “fuck you,” but that’s an overused phrase around here.

P.S.: The idea that I’m an “Arloon” or “Pinhead” is downright laughable. I’ve praised Perry and criticized Pineda; if need be, I can find the fucking posts to prove it. What a grotesque, dogmatic world you depict: if you’re not up Perry’s ass, you must be up someone else’s!

P.P.S.: None of the above applies to those rational Perry-fans out there, who have managed to allow the Beaked One to be supreme and be secure enough to not rabidly react to those who do not agree. I’d name names, but I’ve done it before and you know who you are.

Precisely.
Don and Michigan_Girl used to have a favorite expression for Pinheads: "lube up." But the fact is that it better applies to Loons than anyone.

As long as I'm here, I'll gladly provide that service.

I like Pineda but I'm not a Pinhead..I like Augeri but I'm not a Wiggler...I like Perry but I'm not a Loon..so what am I ?
Just a guy who loves good music and respects anyone's opinion even when I don't share that opinion.
Why this polarization ?... "if you're not with us you're against us"...come on people it's not the war against terrorism...it's just music.

You're a flip-flopper is what you are!  I don't know if you're referring to me, but I'm not trying to sway anyone to one side or another. Many people like Arnel... More power to them. I hope they go out and enjoy the shows. I don't personally, and am just voicing my opinion. I wish they would either find a guy who can sing without an accent, or just form a different band. I LOVE the idea of a Deen fronted album though. :D

No I wasn't referring to you but just in general to those who don't understand that a different opinion is just a different opinion.
If you think Arnel isn't good enough as a singer for Journey I will respect that... and I hope you respect my opinion which is I think he is more than good enough.

Back when they were only talking about doing a Manila concert, I knew that it would be something very emotional for AP to do there. Of course I'm sure it was for him but not sure how much if any it had on the effect of his performance. Some of it may account for something.

On my deal, watched it for historical reasons.

He is a good singer but it never worked for me.

My apologies to anyone who was offended by my rants at the time.

Pineda's accent was more discernible at the Manila concert than it was at the Vegas one, I think.

Funny, how Giddy is the only one here who expresses his opinion and be witty, but others doing the same are either delusional or misplaced.... And, he never misses a beat getting on his high horse....putting SP worshippers in their place... :?

Ya gotta handicap Gid though.. he's never been graced by the "Beaked One's" presence... and video just doesn't do it justice... (this coming from one who's seen all of Journeys singers except JSS or Fleishman)

I listen to Robert Fleischman all the time, even his new stuff. I like all the Journey singers, past and present. :D
Got to see the beak on the FTLOSM tour and he was sounding pretty rough, IMO. Would have loved to have seen him in his prime.

Amen. I have lots of videos of his prime and every recording he sang on. I also have everything there is with Augeri and both DVDs with Arnel, as well as albums. Once in awhile I go on a kick and play everything with SP, Augeri in Vegas to Arnel in Vegas and Manila. I enjoy all of it. I'm glad I have been able to find something to like in all of it.

True that! I only had the chance to see him with Journey the once back in '82 on the Escape tour. Phenomenal is right, I wish I would've had the chance to have caught a show on the Frontiers or ROR tour. That is my favorite vocal era of his. It's funny, just last week (I carpool back and forth to work with my neighbor to our offices downtown) and Separate Ways came on the radio and she mentioned how cool his voice was. I haven't listened to as much Journey lately and it's soooo true, he just had such a unique and rich resonance or timbre to his voice in those years that I just loved! Smoooooth like buttah! :)

Granted, in the later years, when SP's voice became deeper and hoarser, live rendition of this song often became diminished...so yeah, Arnel may be better. But, no way better than SP at his peak. This is pitched perfect, with the right emotion and nuance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5pUOVC50Y8

Truly, we are clearly not worthy.

tater1977 wrote:Whats funny is an areloon is giving that advice ....

Me too...now go sit in the corner you are in time out (that's what I did when I owned a daycare and the two year old kids ranted like Giddy)

Blah....I am now to the point that I could care less who sings for Journey....it does however crack me up that after joining this place and making way too many
posts..it does seem to be the one thing that can still breathe life into what has become a rather mundane place.

Thanks for your post Giddy...now to go and try and get back that 5 minutes of my life.

From our previous encounters, I guessed it would take someone like you much longer.
