Any gas in the tank left for one last Journey album?

Postby Don » Tue Jan 08, 2013 4:48 pm

Not talking about a live album, we're talking something original like Eclipse.

I think we can rule 2013 out as the band will be hitting the road again in less than 30 days.

They'll release a legacy sounding album like Revelation in 2015 with a live CD of the dirty dozen attached to it.

The band's productivity is tied with sales. Once Arrival was leaked and barely charted, the band pretty much lost interest in writing/releasing new material. Cain at one point said the band's days of releasing full length LPs were over. Neal pushed to do Red 13, only to have 2 new tracks to play on tour. Generations only happened because Augeri was preparing a solo release. The surprising success of Revelation re-energized the group, but I imagine Eclipse's lackluster performance has the band questioning "why bother" all over again. Hopefully, Neal gets inspired. There's even stuff on his new solo CD that could be worked into Journey material.

They'll probably have to have some sort of deal in the works before they'll record much of anything. The last two records were on the WalMart tab, no?

Eclipse was on Nomota, Journey's label

Just a note to the band. If you read this... If you want to make a new Journey album, then make a new "Journey" album. I suggest all of you go back and listen to Infinity, Evolution, Departure, Escape and Frontiers until your ears bleed. Do a couple of songs with duets, like you did in the old days. Return a bit to simplicity. The old Journey sound is what your fans want. Not this over-layered guitar work and vocal work. Clean it up to where you have one guitar playing. We don't need our ears jammed with layers of guitars. Certainly, vocal harmonies are fine, but we're not looking for a choir of voices going on. We want to hear a singer or two, a guitar playing, with keys, bass and drums. Honestly, you guys are trying too hard.

Agreed.

just go back, get those old muli-track tapes out of the vault... and read the track sheets. Maybe get Roy Thomas Baker and Kevin Elson to produce.

Hell try to get Mutt Lang and go for a retro sound..

Would be nice if some Nashville influence rubs off on Cain. I'd love to hear what John Shanks would do with this band.

Right- but the question was if they both were "on Walmarts tab"...

If I remember correctly, Eclipse was self-funded.

LOL, my 2 cents..........talk to your old label/HH managed counterparts (Mr Big) about getting back to making and playing music for the love of it again. Playing, creating and touring on their own timetable. They grew up and put aside old baggage and reunited for the love of playing and creating together again......like Billy said, none of them really needed to do it for the money at this point. Sure they probably made great coin playing sold out bigger venues in Japan, but I couldn't have been more thrilled that they decided to tour the US in mid size venues instead of easily packaging up with a couple other bands for a tour, as was thrown around. 2-3 hour shows with all kinds of old catalogue gems thrown in, not just their dirty dozen. I couldn't have been prouder to be an MB fan! :D Hell, I travelled to Cali twice to see them live in 2011, and didn't even go to the packaged Journey/Night Ranger/Loverboy concert right here just over a month ago. Not a Loverboy fan, new Journey I can take or leave, although wouldn't have minded seeing Night Ranger live. The over touring, constant dirty dozen, and not straying far from the Perry era sound.......just screams all about the money. Have been turned off Bon Jovi for similar reasons. Heck they even called this tour 'Cause We Can'. Sorry, but you CAN'T reach into this fan's pocket any more.

I like that each member of MB, ALL contributed to their new album, each bringing in a number of songs and deciding, along with Kevin Shirley, which ones to use and then collaboratively making each one an MB song. Have to say, I still wish I could have heard what an album of a Schon/Soto/Cain collaboration would have sounded like. :(

I agree with the overly layered guitars. I completely disagree about the vocals though! To me, Steve MF'n Perry brought vocals to the forefront of the band and that's what turned them into the group we all became to love. Hell, go back and listen as far back as "City Of The Angels" and "People". They layered the HELL out of vocals, and to me... that is THE biggest thing that has been absent post Perry. Nearly every major hit from the band had SERIOUSLY stacked vocals.

Make it sound like the Journey I KNOW with NO ACCENT in the vocals and I'm in. Otherwise... I'll pass.

I know they layered the shit out of the vocals back then too, but not on every song. Sometimes, they let Perry stand on his own, and when they did, it was never disappointing. An example would be "Stay Awhile". Dude, I absolutely hated People and Places early on, but now I have grown to realize what talent it took to pull that one off. And then they did it live? That took mega balls. One of my favorite Perry tunes, just because it showcases what a freak of a great singer he is, is Sweet and Simple off of Evolution. He's just plain showing off on that song.

Infinity and Evolution, which City of the Angels is on, were done with Roy Thomas Baker producing. Perry has talked about why they got him... it was due to his engineering on Queens albums.. especially the stacked vocal sound.

Clearly when they recorded People and Places for Departure, they continued the vocal stacking.

I would really like to see an ROR dvd, but unfortunetly according to Lora there isnt any decent full concert footage of an ROR show. They could release a Frontiers dvd, possibly the Japan Budokan show.

Pertaining to the Tours: Im tired on seeing them play with mediocre opening acts, same songs, and short setlist. I did enjoy the tour with Heart, they complimented eachother really well. I also was pretty impressed with Night Ranger, but Loverboy? Not so much. Just Journey and Pat Benatar wouldnt have been a bad tour. What about a Co-headliner Journey and Chicago? Sad part is Cetera is gone and Bill Chaplin is now also gone. How about just Journey and Foreigner? Yes, they have toured with me before, but having longer setlists from Journey and Foreigner would be cool. Maybe even Journey with special guests Boston. This may seem way off the wall, but what about Journey and the Beach Boys?

I agree... sonically Eclipse is great... musically its horrible.

Had they recorded a legacy sounding Journey album they may have gotten a bit more love..

I bought the album and was disappointed as well. I appreciated the effort to change but the great material was not there.

I'm positive there are many songs that a number of the members never quite completed for whatever reason and now they could (if they wanted to) just go back through them, choose a few and freshen them up with AP and have enough material for a new album. Never know.

There are legacy songs on Eclipse (Someone, Anything is Possible, She's a Mystery, Ritual). The new stuff is pretty much Red 13 part 2. Not very hook-oriented.

Legacy material is hook oriented to the average listener.. IMO nothing on Eclipse meets that standard...
