Against The Wall came right after ROR.

thought it was Pre-ROR, mostly because Perry saying he didnt even listen to any music for a year or more.

I think Against The Wall was recorded to fulfill a contractual obligation.

Actually, he was working on Against The Wall as a follow up to Street Talk and had to leave it because of his obligation to record another Journey album (ROR). Sony put a lot of pressure on him too and weren't going to release ATW anyway as it didn't sound Journey enough for them. He basically did ROR so he could continue his solo career unhindered afterwards but then, his mom died and he went off the tracks.

As Don said, Against the Wall was meant to be a follow up to Street Talk (notice on album cover...SP is leaning against a wall). During the promo interviews for ST, he said there was plan for a 2nd solo album...perhaps after the next Journey recording (which turned out to be ROR). He took a 1-1/2 yr. break after the last ROR concert, probably started working on his solo record in earnest in '89/'90 (there was talk about SP being in the studio working on a solo album in the Journey fan newletters around that time (including an interview with Lora Beard). Nothing came out of these sessions...as we later found out a Sony executive (the label) scrapped the project, deciding that the songs Steve was working on were not good enough for commercial release.

Fast forward to 1992-93, Steve tried again...this time assembling a band together, came up with a new batch of songs... which passed muster and got FTLOSM released ('94). Those songs that were to be on the ATW album later got packaged in the Steve Perry Greatest Hits + 5 Unreleased cd (1998).

For those who haven't heard these songs, you probably can find them posted on yt. I love SP, but I have to agree with the record label about these songs not having pop appeal.

"Congratulations" seems to be out of this same time frame...actually, sounds like a pretty good song... albeit, only in demo form.

I think the FTLOSM songs are no better than the Against the Wall.
Have a hard time believing someone at Sony would scrap this album.
Against the Wall and Love is like a river would have been hits.

I like the song Against the Wall, but he tried to hit notes his voice was incapable of hitting, which was cringeworthy, and I think people would have shunned it because of that.

FTLOSM has more pop appeal (imo). ...even some great songs...You Better Wait, Missing you, Anyway.
The best song from ATW is Melody.

Hands down FLOSM is the better album! I agree with Rick some of the songs on AGAINST THE WALL were completely cringe worthy and should have never seen the light of day, GREATEST HITS + 5 or or otherwise.

I like the title track, but you can hear how damaged his voice was at that point.

My personal take on Against the Wall songs on GH + 5

When You're in Love (For the First Time) - bleh
Against the Wall - good and actually heavy
Forever Right or Wrong (Love's Like a River) - low key but decent
Summer of Luv - terrible
Melody - CD 101.9 easy listening jazz but I like it.
Once in a Lifetime, Girl - meh
What Was - pretty good
