I guess I'm 2 months behind this story, but does anyone have details about this?

He decided he wanted to devote his time to Yes and his solo work. That's all...

Didn't he say he was retiring or going to do some projects he had been putting off for forever? I don't think there was any animosity with anyone, just time to move on.

A new album, Valkyrie is coming out soon with Sam Coulson on the axe.

Just curious. He was far and away the weak link when I saw them live in 2010.i love these guys' drive to create when so many of these acts are content to live in the past

Believe it or not he owns the rights to the name.

JP is a cool guy. Met him last year, and all he was really concerned with was trying to find a place to get some booze.

Well...I would've, but I told him what bar was best, and he went to another that was closer to the venue. Pissed me off, but I was drunk. lol

Great guy. Steve said he just burned out on the travel and workload , at times was getting off one airplane after an Asia show and getting back on the next flight for Yes.

Got to see the new JP Asia band in Feb. really awesome show and lineup and love the new song as well. They treated us very well with complimentary meet and greet. A guy I play with in a cover band is in the JPAsia. Usually not a fan of split off lineups but this one holds their own. Thankfully the majority of the set was John Payne Asia songs. I went and found Aria before the show and really love it now, didn't quite warm up to it back in the day. Heres my review and pics:

Best news I've heard! I appreciate his playing on early Asia material, but any guitarist out there can run circles on him, and he was definitely the weakest link in the band. I have a live dvd of them and he doesn't even look like he's alive on stage. New blood might help their albums too. He's sounded pretty stale on the last few. I'm anxious to hear what the new kid can do on new original tunes. :D

He sucked live in 2010. Choppy as fuck and horrible line 6 modeled amp tone. Bleh.

Steve Howe's tone has sucked since Drama, with the exception of his solo album Turbulence.

If Steve sucked onstage with Asia recently, it's because he wasn't into it. A few years back, Yesfans said Steve played with an intensity they hadn't seen from him in years. So Asia clearly isn't where Steve's head's been for some time.

Yes, and he still sucks. You can appreciate him all you want. He's like the walking dead with a guitar. Boring as hell, and his chops suck compared to just about any other professional guitarist around. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate his contribution to music, but his playing just doesn't cut it anymore. Show me something you think he smokes on and I'll show you several other guitarists playing the same thing better, and with a better sound. :D

Listen to Drama again and tell me he sucks. His TONE sucks and has sucked since, but you're really discounting his chops if think every other guy with a guitar is better than him.

I'm not really a Steve Howe fan, but thought he was great on Drama. "Into the Lens" is a phenomenal song. That album is a lost gem, shunned by many for its Buggles roots, I would assume.

I had no clue Steve Howe had left until I read this tonight, and sure enough, Sam Coulson is featured on the website (also with a video of him recording in the studio with ASIA -- http://www.originalasia.com/index.php).

Steve Howe is kind of an enigma... I do think he has some real brilliance as a guitar player, especially with his acoustic stuff, but he can also be a little too simplistic. Plus, I think he's gotten a lot sloppier as time has gone on. I agree with Ehwmatt, that when I saw them live a few years back, he was really weak and sloppy (even for simple things like the slide-work on "Don't Cry"), but strangely, he was very solid and accurate on the acoustic.

Whatever you think of him though, Steve Howe did help create the signature sound of ASIA, and hearing him again on Phoenix was a most welcome experience. That being said, he's replaceable, and ASIA fares quite well with different players (I even liked Mandy Meyer).

I'll look forward to hearing their new album. I thought XXX wasn't nearly as strong as Phoenix, and I hope they put a little more prog back into the new one.

Never met him, but would love to. I'm really out of touch with what he's doing, and your posts have been the only news I get about them, really. I like the new song! Very ASIA'esque for sure, though the lipsynching in the video is horrendous. I'm surprised Jay Schellen is still with them. He's such a killer drummer, and can really smack the skins a hell of a lot harder when he's playing heavier material (check out "Heart Turns to Stone" from Hurricane's Liquifury).

He does have chops, but he's extremely sloppy and has to be THE most boring player to watch. Here's Skelator....

LOL, I'd leave Asia, too. How many more fucking times can you hear "Heat Of The Moment," let alone play it?

Hello! ASIA is boring. When they released their last live DVD (like they need another!) and greenlit the promo footage, it looked like the most boring concert ever. They all looked out of it. John Wetton sounded sleepy.
