First Album/Song that Made an Impact on You.

Postby scarygirl » Wed Apr 17, 2013 10:16 am

I have a Rupert Holmes song in my youtube playlist," Him." I was listening to it just now and flashed back to an earlier time, me sitting cross legged on the floor of the master bedroom hunched over my mom's record player listening to Rupert Holmes, Rick Springfield and the like. Up until about ten years ago, I could remember all of the records my mom had. Now, the memory along with the songs from that playlist are fading one by one. Like singing the chorus climbing trees, "Him, him, him. What you going to do about him? You're going to have to do without him. Or do without me, me, me. No one gets it for free, it's me or it's him," not knowing the meaning of what the heck I was singing...

Well, it depends on what you mean by "impact". For me, the album that just blew me away the first time I heard it was Leftoverture. There weren't any emotional ties or stories in any of the songs that hit home or anything like that. It was the musicianship and the brilliant song writing which incorporated and blended the instruments so incredibly well - and they even had a violin player!! A fucking violin player!!
I was just starting to break out of the "classical music only" kind of piano lessons I had endured for so many years and was wanting to learn to play everything I heard that I liked on the radio. So, when I heard that album with every song having such a commanding presence of keyboards and how BIG the sound was, I decided there and then that playing keyboards in a band was what I wanted to do - and I did.
As for a single song that just grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go, that would be "Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away" by Phil Collins. His album, Hello, I Must Be Going, had come in the mail from Columbia House and really only knew 2 or 3 of the songs - which was fairly common back in the day when radio was the only real exposure anyone got to artists' music which would include a couple of songs (maybe) in their playlists leaving the remainder of an album to fade into obscurity. One night I put the album on and went about my business. When it got to this song, it stopped me dead in my tracks. My girlfriend of 4 years, my first love, had just dumped me and I wasn't dealing with it well AT ALL! I was 17 at the time. Ya know how it seems like every sentimental song all of the sudden is speaking directly to you..? that was pretty much the case with everything I saw, heard, read, etc. Then this fucking song comes on and it was like Phil hear about my situation and said, "Steve, I'm gonna write a song that says everything you wish you could say to this girl and every word will be taken straight from your heart. Sound good...?"

I don't know about first song but first album well..... I can remember my Dad bought me a cassette called 'Pure Rock' by K-Tel.

Not bad songs to introduce you to rock and roll for the first time when you're only 5 years old.....

Here's the actual album....

I was a different type of kid and liked old music while the kids around me were listening to new stuff like Van Halen and like that.

My first album I purchased was from this local record shop in my area called Rainbow Records for this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL3AgkwbYgo

Shortly after getting the album, I realized that I loved the entire album and not just the one song I purchased it for.

I was about 11 when my Dad took my two older sisters and I on a 3 day drive to Fl.
Before this I didnt care all that much about music or getting cassetes.

I must have heard Don't Stop Believin', Stone in Love, Open Arms, and Who's Crying Now a thousand times each.
When I got home I remeber biking about 40 miles round trip (without permission) to the nearest place to get the cassette.
Within a year I had every Journey record including Dream After Dream which was about 20 bucks (a fortune back then for a 11 yr old). Can Still remeber the first time I heard Separate Ways on the radio the next year.

While Frontiers is my favorite Journey record, Will never forget Escape.

I remember sitting with my grandfather on rainy weekends watching the Sunday afternoon movie on CBS (long before cable). It would come on after Wrestling and they used Barry White's Love's Theme for the intro bumper. Every time, I hear the song now, it takes me back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPHmsEoLsL0

Another song which I didn't even know the title of until a bout 15 years ago was Eres Tu. We would take the family stationwagon to Wildwood every summer and I remember one particular year (1973?) being amazed to hear singing in a foreign language. This was long before Spanish radio took over the frequencies in America. The tune was on regular top 40 radio and so different than anything I heard before. It was played quite a bit on the different piers and shops that summer. I didn't even know it was Spanish until I saw a 17 year old Anacani singing similar sounding songs on the Lawrence Welk show, which my grandparents watched religiously every Sunday night before Disney.
Like with the other song, when I heard it again, about 15 years ago on some AM station, it took me back instantly to a special place and time.

I'd say he's aged ok.
For surely I don't look as sweet as I did at six.
Age gets us all if we're lucky!

Rainy Sundays and those old Sunday films used to be so depressing to me as a kid. That first vid, I remember that song. Great shot of Fuji in the beginning. As for the song, I remember when it was popular on the radio. I always imagined how they made that sound effect that you hear going to the beat of the song by rubbing two sea shells together really fast.

Am I missing something?, that song has no words and I don't remember it ever having any either.

Barry wrote it as an instrumental for his The Love Unlimited Orchestra which was his backing band. Lyrics were added by his publisher later so that his backup singers (Love Unlimited) could sing to it also.

Here it is with lyrics.

Oh man... you're killing me with this one, Don!   I was a closet admirer of Eres Tu! Of course I would have never told anyone I liked it - and I really liked that song! - but when it would come on it was just so captivating in a way. Sort of the way Dancing Queen has that commanding 6 note piano part that's so big and so regal-feeling. Same thing with Eres Tu whenshe's joined by the backing vox.

And if you've ever seen the movie, Tommy Boy you know exactly the part I'm talking about here... (best scene in the entire movie!)

EDIT: Just did a quick bit of research on the song and here's something kind freaky or at least the timing of your post is... The version of the song which was performed and made famous by Moceades made its debut April 7, 1973 - almost 40 years ago to the day! {{Insert theme from Twilight Zone here}}

Funny you mentioned Abba. Mocedades came in at 2nd place with the song at the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest. That's how they got a record deal to release at as a single. Abba won the same contest the following year with Waterloo. That started ABBA's run to world wide fame.

There's an actual English version too, called "Touch The Wind."

He's a pretty cool Dad!! Unfortunately, he's more into Chuck Mangione and Henry Mancini........which are still great musicians, but...... :? I agree, though, as it was a bad ass cassette. I wore it out! I remember I was only five, but knew what Uncle Ted was referring to in Cat Scratch Fever. ha! I remember I got screamed at by my Mom, from down the block, playing my Foreigner 'Jukebox Hero' 45 single too loud on a Fisher Price record player.

In the early 1980's i was in second or third grade and the thing is i never played with toys as a kid so i kinda replaced that with collecting records and listening to the radio 24/7.Anyway the first 45rpm record i had back then were ELO Don't Bring Me Down and at the time i was getting into the Beatles and made my dad buy the double cassette 1962-1966 when 13.99 was a lot of money in the reccession days i think this was in '82 and my dad joked i hope you can put ketchup on that cassette and eat it because of the sticker price. Finally around that same time when other kids came home to play with transformers and G.I. joes i was busy collecting music and one weekend i heard the top song on Casey Kasem's countdown and he played Open Arms by Journey so i immediately got the cassette Escape and listened to it from start to finish and it became my favorite for a long time.I also became a huge Def Leppard fan when Pyromania first hit mainly due to MTV which i watched morning, noon and night for the videos.

I recall me and my sister asking our dad to turn this one up quite often on the radio. LOL! I have a great memory of us kids hanging out the station wagon's windows with this song blaring as we begged mom and dad to drive down San Francisco's Crookedest Street In The World 'one' more time on one of our trips to California. Dad must have done it 4 or 5 times in a row for us!
