Don't you hate it when...

Postby G.I.Jim » Sun May 05, 2013 10:34 am

you cut yourself cooking? I was slicing potatoes tonight on my mandolin and sliced pretty damn deep into my thumb. I did the same thing about two years ago and sliced the whole corner of my knuckle off! I actually had to burn it with a lighter to get it to stop bleeding. Maybe I should start buying my potatoes pre-sliced?

Lol!! And not to rub it in, but I throw a bag in mine and it counts the seconds between pops. It's pure genius! It doesn't have a set time for popcorn. I just sit on my ass until it stops and it's perfect every time! :D I didn't even buy the microwave... it came with my house. It's not the best, but that is a pretty damn cool feature. Funny to think back to the days of those things with handles that you would hold over a flame until it popped. Lol!!

I sliced through my finger with a box cutter at work a few years ago. I was trying to slice off
these cables that were holding a display together so i could set it up. Didn't notice it
until i saw blood on the floor. Pretty cool actually

I worked in a grocery store when I was around 16 years old. I used to have to cut open big cases of cereal boxes while I was stocking shelves. One day, I cut through the box and sliced about 3 inches of my left forearm with the razor. It cut down all the way into the muscle and was pretty nasty! I could see all the yellow fat cells. I should have had stitches, but just put a couple of butterfly bandages on it and went back to work. Lol!!

GI your using the cutting apparatus incorrectly. If you are cutting with a mandolin, you need a guard. Kind of like a training wheel for people who always slice their fingers. :P You might want to get one. Here are lessons on how to use a mandolin. Cooking 1O1 Hugs and get a band-aid and a sucker for the pain. :D I scare people when I peal potatoes because of how I hold a knife as a left handed person. I have never cut myself pealing anything a day in my life. I am always aware of how close a knife is to my hand. I can do a mandolin that way too.

I can't count how many finger cuts my wife has had just from opening cans. She just can't seem to get that you can't pull the top of the can out and slide your finger on it or have it put pressure on you without getting cut. I swear this is a twice a week occurance. She's so sweet and she makes great dinner, but why can't she figure this out?

Back when microwaves took the leap from 850 watt to 1100 watt as the standard, we bought a new one. My wife is a popcorn fanatic. Me - not so much. I hate getting a kernel jammed between two teeth then having it bug the shit out of you until you get it out. That, and the husks that always manage to get between the gums and teeth. Too much work... Anyway, I reminded her about the increased wattage and to adjust cooking times accordingly. FIRST THING SHE DOES... and I mean the very first thing to get cooked in it was a bag of popcorn and setting the time for the old microwave. Burned the shit out of it! Smelled up the entire house and I swear to God it took a couple of months to get the smell out of the microwave. Every time it got used, the smell would fill the kitchen. Our current microwave has a key for everything. It has features I've never used and probably never will.

Those mandolins are sharp little puppies! Do a great job but razor sharp!

I just knock off the oldest quote, and it does the trick. Remember on the old site when people would quote each other 20 times, and their text would wind up in the middle of the screen in a box that was 2 inches wide and 7 inches long? I'm thinking the 3 quote limit is to prevent that.

Learn a better technique for cutting foods and you won't have this problem anymore. It's got to be at least 25 years now since I last cut myself while prepping food that I was cooking and I use very sharp knives, none of those slicing dicing gadgets.

Maybe this might help:

Believe it or not, I'm very good with my hands when it comes to the kitchen. I know I've made it seem the opposite with my post, but I've only cut myself twice in all the years I've cooked. I do all the cooking in my house, and cooking is one of my hobbies. I've cooked for as many as 250 people twice. :D I've cooked for tons of big events with over a hundred people, and LOVE cooking. I'm known for it. I normally slice everything by hand, but when it comes to cooking potatoes, I like the mandolin because it's absolutely consistent. I like to cook thick-sliced potatoes, fry them in peanut oil, then cover them with garlic sat and grated parmesan cheese. If they're cut by hand, they're not as exact and don't cook as evenly.

I just happened to get a little too quick with the mandolin and.... SLICE!  It's worth the pain though.

Haven't done that but I have crush fractured a finger and I'd rather cut myself than do that again! Had to see a hand surgeon, no fun. I have however burned myself more than once in the kitchen, lol.

Car door, I don't recommend it  I was paying more attention to my daughter than my hand, lol. If I were a musician it would have been bad! Fractured in 2 places and I never got all the feeling back. I think almost cutting it off would have hurt less! lol

95% of what my family eats is food cooked at home. I'd like to see that number more closer to 98% but....

I learned to cook back in the mid 80's when I was working as a waiter at an Italian restaurant. My boss was the owner who supervised the cooks, he was Italian and the best boss I ever had, well now he's tied with my current boss. But anyways, my boss at the Italian restaurant saw that I was very interested in cooking so he would talk with me about many techniques for preparing and cooking Italian foods. This is the reason 80% of what I cook is Italian. Part of what he taught me was using cooking equipment like very sharp knives correctly. Before I worked for him, I worked as a prep cook and cook during my high school years at various restaurants. I was always cutting myself because no one taught me how to use a knife correctly nor did anyone demonstrate that they knew how to use a knife properly either, until I worked at the Italian restaurant.

Cooking is also my hobby. I cook more meals for my family than my wife does some times. She cooks the Japanese and Asian fusion dishes while I do all the rest.
I've never eaten a piece of sushi I didn't thoroughly enjoy.

Tried separating some frozen sausages with a very sharp knife not long ago. When they split apart the knife's point went directly into the palm of my left hand and hit bone. Interesting sensation. Immediately put pressure on it with a rag.

As one who never goes to doctors I didn't have much choice in this instance. Somehow though, I didn't need stitches. My hand did hurt for a few months afterwards.
