I'm pretty surprised ... at the surprise by all the folks over on MR. Listen, the guy is a self-admitted lazy slob. Knowing that, it seems to be reasonable to assume that your $$$ is going to go towards stupid shit like Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Styx concert tickets, a Wrestlmania 5 DVD and/or the 2 for $4 Monster Energy special at the local Citgo. I mean, seriously, did people think the guy was going back to college on $200? Perhaps an online course in Civil Engineering? A Tony Robbins book on motivation? No, he's gonna give mom a small fraction and he's gonna spend the rest on dumb shit. And that's okay.

Giving implies ... giving. And when you give, it's not where the money goes, but what you *hoped* the money would bring about. That's the only part that *you* can control. The guy presented a compelling enough case for some kind hearts to throw a few dollars his way. If you want to debrief the guy, a la Fact Finder, you have every right to do so, but I find that arduous and cumbersome. Throw the guy a $50, pass a few kinds words of encouragement along and hope for the best. To me, whether the person starts anew or buys a case of vodka, *I* did the right thing, and that's all I can control. I don't give a fuck what happens after I "give." To worry, regret or second guess yourself is simply not worth it. We have more important shit to worry about ... like the Jodi Arias verdict. Image

I agree with Dan. WHEN I give money, I don't question what it goes for. But if I see it used frivolously, I won't be donating to their cause again. I am good knowing I THOUGHT I was helping someone. That being said, I don't throw my money around to just anyone. Mainly because I don't exactly have extra money sitting in a fund to do so. I don't blame anyone for using discretion on the Internet though. It's full of scams and con artists, so it is normal to ask questions or want more info before giving. People shouldn't feel bad or dumb they gave. Your heart was in the right place. I just think maybe Eve doesn't have an understanding of what true poverty is quite yet. Hopefully he won't find out. And instead he'll find some way to earn some money. I do wish him the best.

Thanks for your kind words lynn. I understand why not everyone gave. Your comments about con artists and scams
are certainly on point. I was just really out of options and had no idea that my aunt would FINALLY allow
us to stay with her for awhile. It only took 3 years of begging but i understand why. Believe me i am
not taking everyone's generosity for granted. I will be internally grateful for everyone's help in
probably my most desperate hour ever.

Hmm, kind hearts were mentioned by Dan, but would "intentions" be more acceptable and less gay? Sorry, rusty on the non-gay MR rules!

Even though that's nice to do, what is it going to get you in the end besides people taking your money? I'm only that way with immediate family members and very long time friends (all that I can count on just one hand).

Don't feel alone though because you're not. I've read over the years how many lottery winners went from rags to riches and then back to rags because they spent all their millions on donating to everyone who came asking.

Reminds me a few years back, my father came to visit and stayed at our house for a few weeks. He was getting unbearable towards the end so I asked him if he could loan me $10,000 even though I didn't need it. He said no and then left a few days later to go back home, a week earlier then he originally planned. Part of the reason I asked him for the loan was to see if he would actually do it, as I was doing my will and was thinking I'd leave him a good chunk of property. After he said no, I rethought my will and drew it up accordingly. Him leaving a week early was a bonus for me and the family, turned out the be a positive risk.

I didn't say that. Please don't put words in my mouth. I feel that when I buy a pickup bed full of dog food and take it down to the SPCA or pay a vet directly to treat a stray dog that is heartworm positive, there is much less of a chance of being scammed. You do what you feel is right and I'll do the same. And last I checked, children are human.

I used to donate to some organizations in the Philippines, but only when I would actually step foot over there and go to the organizations in person. Most times my donations would be stuff like clothing and food for a family that I knew over there. I also have given to foodbanks before while in the US. A few months ago I donated a few hundred dollars to a family friend's daughter who graduated with full honors from jr high school last year and now has a chance to go to Harvard for summer school this year. The family is one of those hard working but little money type of families, they are from the Philippines. She had to come up with a set amount in order to go so I helped her out. That's a worth while donation in my book and I was very happy to help out.

SH- won't quote so it's not a mess, lol, but I don't expect to "get" anything with my kindness, just is who I am. I just also don't expect someone to lie about something as serious as being homeless.

There are people who will and do lie just to get money. Just look at how many people say they can't work or are looking for work so the government assistance money keeps rolling in, month in and month out, like clock work.

Undeniable truth #31

31.The culture war is between the winners and those who think they're losers who want to become winners. The losers think the only way they can become winners is by banding together all the losers and then empowering a leader of the losers to make things right for them.

Everett, I hate to say it, but, I’m from the same school as FF. His advice may sound a little rough, but it’s really the best. It is sort of along the lines of “give a man a fish…” ‘Tis also true that if one chooses to give you a fish, they shouldn’t worry about how, when or why you’re eating it. Just don't ever burn bridges. That said, I know in this day of “greater job opportunities” you shouldn’t have a problem. But if you find the economy isn’t flourishing in your little corner of the world, like it is in la la land …head south, I will make sure someone puts you to work.

Jodi is guilty.

During lunch today, I walked into Rite Aid. There was a panhandler at the entrance who pretended to ignore me when I was ready to hand him the ¢37 that had been bouncing around in my pocket. Perhaps he was waiting to score a little bigger reward on my return trip when leaving the establishment?
I bought St Joseph Chewable aspirin and paid in cash which left me with more loose change. Then, a Lindt hazelnut bar caught my eye. In a minute, it too was mine along with the aspirin.
Upon egress, the panhandler circled in for his toll. His strategy had earned him ¢3.
I sat in my car, eating my Swiss Chocolate delight that I had bought with my money, my pockets free of any loose change.
I enjoyed it.

Sort of reminds me of when I lived in San Francisco with roommates 21 years ago. There was this sort of young bum who would always say "got a quarter" in a very alcohol fueled raspy voice. I never had a quarter for him. Crazy thing is when I go up to the city now, 21 years later, he's still around, Geary in the Sunset, but this time he's got a full ratty beard and something like 100 pounds of gutt hanging down almost knocking on his knees as he walks.

There was a study in the City of Glendale (CA) about ten years ago. There were beggars averaging close to two hundred dollars a day. The city used the national guard armory for a winter shelter for these guys but never had enough takers to fill all the cots. Come to find out, a lot of these homeless preferred to stay at the cheap $ hotels because they could drink and smoke there. They made enough cash panhandling where they could make that choice.
