Recent news on Perry sad revelation of a broken heart

Postby artist4perry » Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:20 pm

You might want to see the new Perry info in the Steve Perry forum. It might give you insights as to where he has been for quite some time, and why he has been so reclusive. I know this is a Journey forum, but even Journey fans might want to hear what has happened to this former Journey member. It might shed light on why he has not made music. For those too lazy to go downstairs, here is the link to Fan Asylum where he did his message to the fans. Thank you Lora and Cyndy for sharing this with us. Truly sad and heart wrenching news.

Ex-Journey Singer Steve Perry Reveals Relationship, Cancer Scare in Touching Blog Post

..By Craig Rosen

http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/stop-the-p ... 12150.html

Former Journey singer Steve Perry has opened up to fans on his Fan Asylum website for only the second time in 2013. In a lengthy and extremely touching blog post, he revealed that he fell in love with a woman who ended up succumbing to cancer, and that he himself suffered a recent cancer scare.

Perry wrote that he fell for psychologist and breast cancer survivor Kellie Nash after seeing her in a cancer TV special and deciding that he simply had to meet her. "In May of 2011, I was with Patty Jenkins in an editing room as she was putting the final editing touches on what was to be the closing segment of a Lifetime Channel breast cancer special called 'Five,'" he recalled. "As the opening scenes camera panned across an outside hospital patio, a narrator's voice commented on their lives and their types of cancer. The camera came across this girl sitting there laughing…I asked [Patty] if she would send Kellie an email that your friend Steve would love to take her to coffee or lunch sometime.

"Patty agreed to do so but said, 'Before I do that I think there's something I should tell you first. After a 3 year battle she was in remission for 8 months then it came back in her lungs and bones and now she's Stage 4 fighting for her life.'"

Perry was admittedly taken aback. "I was frozen……. I didn't know what to do…….. I had lost my mom, dad, grandparents that raised me and I was an only child so my first thought was to maybe not send the email; then my heart said, Maybe we could be friends or maybe she could be my shrink. So I said, 'Please send it.'"

Once the two met in person, it was love at first sight, and they ended up dating for a year and a half. "Yes, we both knew that we were meant to be together. My life was forever changed in ways I will explain at another time but it was all because of my Kellie," said Perry. Perry was by Nash's side as she battled cancer. Together, they relocated to New York, where Nash tried an alternative treatment and the couple "had the most magical summer of our lives together." But Nash's cancer came back, and sadly, she died in December 2012.

"She was so strong, so courageous and we really loved each other so very much. I've been trying to grieve and not run from this loss so for the last 5 months that's what I've been doing along with recalling everything being in Love with Kellie taught me," Perry wrote.

Then, three weeks ago, Perry had a mole removed from his face that turned out to be cancerous. "I've had two surgeries in two weeks to remove all the cancer cells and I've been told they think they got it all and no other treatments are required," Perry revealed.

Perry confessed that he was feeling down last Sunday, with Nash's birthday approaching, so he went for a drive and ran into former MTV VJ Martha Quinn at a street fair. Martha asked him to pose for a picture and Perry obliged, even though he still had a scar on his face from his operations.

Aside from recovering from surgery, Perry also seems to be nursing a broken heart, writing: "Though Kellie and I were only together for one-and-a-half years, it was a lifetime of love packed into every moment."

Although Perry made no mention of performing or recording, his former bandmates in Journey are set to kick off their latest tour on June 28 with a two-night stand at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida.

Steve Perry continues to amaze his fans. Though generally fairly publicity shy, he occasionally reaches out via the website fanasylum.com. His latest post there, published Thursday, will make your heart ache.

In his letter, Perry explains how he recently met the love of his life, a psychologist named Kellie Nash who was fighting breast cancer.

Touching story. Everybody's getting older. Not too late for Steve to reach out to Jonathan and continue to share his gift with the world.

I would think dealing with his own pain right now is paramount. I love to hear him sing...but I cannot and will not ask him to do any more than he can bear to do. I wish him well, better health, and gentle healing of the heart. :(

Man, that had to be a tough loss. Steve's been though a lot. I have no expectations of Steve and wish him well. I enjoyed what he gave us and hope he gets though the process of grief and healing of himself as well.

Steve set himself up for a broken heart - she had stage 4 cancer when he met her. I don't see this as "another tragedy" that randomly victimized Steve... he made it happen. Not to belittle his pain, just saying.

I am sure that Steve suffers from depression. Otherwise why would he say he needed a shrink? It's obvious that anxiety and depression kept Steve out of a Journey reunion. I hope she helped him see that. It wasn't Neal's fault or anyone else's.

People who don't have depression don't use phrases such as "I was depressed."

On Sunday I was a bit depressed because Kellie's birthday was coming up so I went for a drive and ran into Martha Quinn at a street fair.

Newsflash #1: People who have cancer and know they are not likely going to survive do fall in love. Luckily, there are also some courageous people who give their love to them knowing they are going to have to say goodbye.

Newsflash #2: "I was feeling depressed" is many times just a saying. Like "I'm feeling sad." Or "I'm down today." Doesn't mean someone is clinically depressed. I can state this from personal experience as those phrases have come out of my mouth many times and I am (thankfully) not clinically depressed.

Newsflash #3: None of this is about some stupid Journey reunion blame-game.

Though I'm sure it was a tough time for Steve, it was good to read this. Proof yet again that fame and fortune don't guarantee a happy life but I'm glad he realizes that the short time he had with this woman was still a blessing.

Sounds like he gave alot of love and happiness to a person who was on borrowed time.
What an extremely un-selfish and wonderful thing to do. I hope for nothing but the best for his own

I also have thought Steve has clinical depression, however I don't see it as a weakness or a character flaw quite the opposite in fact. Highly sensitive artistically creative and compassionate people are more likely to have depression. It takes a very strong person to be able to deal with and live with depression all the qualities Steve Perry seems to have and it is likely where the emotionality of his music and voice come from which can be a felt experience for the listener.

I was not knocking Steve for falling in love or for being depressed. I am just saying that he knew she had stage 4 cancer, so he knew what the end game was. Is there anything wrong with stating that? I never said anything derogatory.

No, I understand what you were saying. He jumped in with both feet knowing what the end game would probably be. Of course, I do have sympathy for him. One of the unknowns was them connecting the way they did. Still, better to have loved and lost then to never have loved at all. He's been over the mountain now and will always have those memories to look back on.
On a different note, this happened within the last two years. It's a bit of a misnomer for folk to say Perry hasn't released new music because of this. There's a whole decade before they met where nothing was released.
All that said, I am curious if Ms.Nash did encourage him and perhaps provide him some inspiration in getting back to doing what he used to love. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Perry released some material, even stuff that's been sitting on the shelf for a couple years. No touring needed but to put his work back out there for his fans to enjoy might in itself be very therapeutic for him.

While it might be sad and gloomy, I'd bet he has some songs written from his past couple years. After all, he's a musician, so how could he not have thoughts put to music?

I say it all the time.

I guess what think is that I don't have a friendship with Steve Perry like most of you seem to have, so I have no idea what he thinks or feels or how he handles anything. I don't think a statement like that needs to be over-analyzed and such.

I think it's cool that people can garner enough hope to look to a future that is uncertain at best and I feel for those that suffer loss, a loss that I'm sure is no easier even if you see it coming a million miles away.

Weird thing to take a statement like this and start talking about Journey and clinical diagnoses and whether or not he saw it coming. All I really think general fans should do is wish him the best and appreciate his honesty about a couple private situations.

I can't imagine any of this was easy for him. I wish him the best.

SP seems to always have an emotional story to tell. Fine. Great. Understood...as well as we can.

But ya know, I'm sure many are waiting for the follow-up story/interview - whenever- about how this has caused him to be more reclusive, and (once again) there will be no more new music. Or better yet, so many things were 'put on hold' while he grieves. I guess, this fall, for the Cmas buying season, he'll toss the public some other bone too.

The man is full of drama. We get it. Drama, after drama, after emotional state of currency or latency, more drama, etc. Yeah, it's nice to tell this all to the fans, but the fans want new music...geez, any music. And I imagine that all the fans, while sympathetic, are just tired of the perception that there's yet another reason why he can't do the 'music thing' any more.

Uhm, with all due respect, it's past getting old. Put up, or shut up.
