In the fevered run-up to Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” I found myself thinking about all the times and places in my life I’ve heard “One More Time”—the gym, the grocery store, the movies both good and bad—and pondering the incredible amounts of cash the duo must have raked in from the track over the years.
But when it comes to songs that make the most amount of money over time, it’s usually not the hyped-up ones you hear everywhere—”Thriller,” anything by Elvis, etc—because the most money from music isn’t made by sales but by licensing. While Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” is the top-selling single of all time it still pales in comparison to “Happy Birthday,” which reportedly still kicks off more than $2 million every year.
But all these get crushed by the most lucrative song in history. Which is:
“Margaritaville.” By fricking Jimmy Buffett.
Buffett’s song about languishing in a boozy frozen slush of regret is such a popular metaphor for the baby boomer generation that it gave way to an entire company in 2006 dedicated to selling T-shirts, visors, shot glasses—even a $350 blender. Founded by Jimmy Buffett himself, Margaritaville Enterprises, LLC earned $100 million in 2007 and is estimated to have skyrocketed since then—on Thursday New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cut the ribbon at Atlantic City’s Margaritaville hotel and resort—the 27th of its kind.
Another one of Buffett’s songs, “Cheeseburger in Paradise”—spawned its own chain of burger restaurants, also owned by Margaritaville Enterprises, LLC.
With nearly 30 restorts and its retail business thriving, Businessweek estimates that Margaritaville Enterprises, LLC is now kicking off many hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
Not bad being the beneficiary of an entire generation of boomers looking for goofy ways to spend their golden years. If you’re somehow unfamiliar watch below—Buffett is fond of introducing the song by saying, “Please stand for the National Anthem of ‘Margaritaville.’” Yikes.

They still do...even in Arkansas. And I don't really get it either, but it's just a feel-good, good-time, sing-a-long, where everyone forgets the world for a few minutes.

Btw, I was recently in a Sam's Club, and there was a whole rack of shoes labelled 'Margaritaville'. Of course, they were earthy, island-themed, deck/boat type shoes or sandals. And I thought it was pretty cool. I love marketing and spin. More power to him.

Often wondered if Sammy Hagar is using Margaritaville as a model for Cabo Wabo? (Maybe the two of them should team-up for a few things?)

It wouldn't be bad, but every 20 minutes they would play it again  I never knew that song until I went there and within about a month I was sick of it
