Sparklers - Terrorist Tool?

Postby Memorex » Thu Jun 27, 2013 9:55 am

Citing national security concerns and the war on terror, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg asked New York Gov. Michael Cuomo to ban the sale of children’s fireworks.

City officials worried that sparklers — handheld fireworks that emit colorful sparks and are often waved through the air by kids on the Fourth of July — could be used in terrorist attacks, according to The New York Post.

“A recent attempt to harm innocent lives provides a frightening example of how legally purchased… Fireworks can cause dramatic harm and even kill,” said Joseph Garba, Bloomberg’s state legislative director, in a statement.

Seriously. Where the hell are we going as a country? Sparklers?

Yes folks - there are people out there that will harm us and some dangerous things and people will absolutely die. But that will ALWAYS be true. America without sparklers? Uh uh.

Bloomberg is one messed-up cat.

It would be more logical to ban lighters. But then again were talking about Bloomberg.

But they want to let knives back on airplanes. WTF? I don't get it.

My Brother-In-Law used to make sparkler bombs on the 4th. Trust me... all you need is black electrical tape and a bunch of sparklers and you've got some serious explosives. But hell... every kitchen in the country has chemicals that are deadly when mixed. I think banning them is ridiculous. Forks kill more people each year than all the fireworks deaths of all time combined. Someone needs to shove some sparklers up Bloomberg's ass.

Bloomberg can have NY ban sparklers.. as long as the rest of the country bans Bloomberg...

IMHO that's a fair trade.... :D

Last year there was a news story here about just how hot a sparkler gets and what it "could" do to a kid's fingers. So my wife announces, "No more sparklers". I was like, uh, huh? And she was like, uh, you heard me. And I was like, uh, we know how to hold a sparkler - our youngest is 11 for God's sake. And she was like, "whatever!". And we were all like, oooh, look at the sparklers cause we bought them and enjoyed them. :)

That said, I did get bored with them and stuck about 30 packed together in the lawn and lit them all at once. The burn mark in the grass is still there. So maybe I won't do that again.

A bunch of them put together and lit in a sealed container can I suppose. I remember about ten years ago seeing people making sparkler bombs on youtube.

Here's a few newer vids of the same thing pretty much:

The issue with sparklers is you can get a fairly large explosion out of the materials but those materials are not so much controlled and tracked. So anyone can get them and do whatever they wish and if these materials are used in criminal activity, there is no way to trace them back to whomever is responsible.
